In the recent past, climatic changes and variations have occurred in Nigeria with resulting adverse socio-economic impact. From these experiences, it is inferred that the expected change in global climate will have far reaching disastrous consequences for Nigeria if appropriate anticipatory technical and policy Measure are not taken. More recent results from various models based on an eventual warming from a doubling of greenhouse gases of between 1.5 and 5oC by the end of the 21st century predict an acceleration of the eustatic rise in sea level from 1.2-1.5mm/yr. over the last hundred year s to 4 – 6mm/yr. although previous estimates were much higher [e.g.56–3.68m by the end of the 21 century] on the low lying Coastal zone of Nigeria, which is rich in... |

Coral reefs along the entire coast of Kenya suffered widespread bleaching and mortality of corals during the first half of 1998 (Wilkinson, 1998; Obura, 1999; McClanahan et al., 1999). This status report summarises findings relating specifically to coral bleaching, mortality and effects on benthic community structure. In addition, preliminary results from a number of research projects investigating different aspects of the bleaching event are reported here. In shallow waters, on a per-area basis, most of Kenya’s southern fringing reefs have lost between 66% and 80% of their live corals. Coral reefs in deeper water suffered less mortality due to lesser exposure to higher temperatures. Reefs on the northern part of the coast, influenced by cold water... |

Along the coast of Tanzania, coral reefs, marine terraces and beach ridges are among the most important geomorphological features indicative of the Pleistocene/Holocene sea level changes. Three major terrace units can easily be identified on the mainland coast, namely, Mtoni (youngest), Tanga and Sakura (oldest). Three terrace units have also been identified on the Islands of Unguja and Pemba. On the basis of the difference in the terrace elevations between the two terrace systems it is postulated that the marine terraces on the islands probably represent minor fluctuations of sea level, rather than major phases of sea level fluctuation. A sand beach on the seaward side and several sand ridges on the landward side represent the Recent phase. The oldest... |

While industrial growth is mainly a function of market forces, governments actively pursue policies and activities to accelerate industrialization. These policies, directly or indirectly, affect the natural environment. Sound industrial and environmental policies are not incompatible, even though it is difficult task either to set and enforce at the same time environmental standard that do not have some negative impact on industrial development options, or to formulate industrial policies that take environmental issues fully into account. The objective of this study is to elaborate a national assessment for the purpose of the industrial environment overview in the process of sustainable development in Côte d’Ivoire which is a part of the systematic... |

A seasonal study of the diversity of benthic foraminifera in the Bonny estuary was carried out at ten Stations located at various zones in the estuary. Four diversity indices, species number[S], Fisher & shannon Wiener function H(S) Equitability (E) were employed in the analysis. Examination of the spatial distribution and seasonal variations of these indices provided information on the responses of the foraminiferal fauna pollution. Diversity indices, S& and H(s) were found to be consistently low at station 5 (NNPC Refinery jetty Okrika). The dominance of pollution – tolerant species such as Ammotium salsum, Miliammina fusca and Ammonia beccarii at this station was also observed. The loe diversity indices recorded at station 5 is attributed to... |

Artisanal fishing in Africa, historically dominated by fishermen in canoes and boats who set out to sea from small coastal fishing villages in search of bonga, sardinella and other pelagic fish, has provided a nutritious source of food often cheaper than meat. As a result, fish has been consumed by large portions of the population and has become a diet staple. Today, however, some African fisheries, including the bonga (Ethmalosa fimbriata), which is widely harvested and eaten by west Africans, suffer from periods of excess harvest or glut, particularly during the peak season between November and May. Because most fishing communities do not have ice-storage facilities, the daily catch is either sold fresh or smoke-dried before it spoils.... |

CORDIO activities were conducted in seven of the Indian Ocean Islands namely, Comores, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion, Rodregues, and Seychelles. On each island biophysical and socio-economic assessments were conducted which have strengthened the annual monitoring of the reefs and collected baseline data for the socio-economic monitoring. In addition, a rapid assessment of the risk posed to island communities of ciguatera poisoning caused by potential increases in abundance of ciguatoxin producing dinoflagellates following bleaching was carried out. This study will eventually be expanded to encompass sites throughout the CORDIO region. Finally, as a record, a digital photographic database of the monitoring sites has been developed for the Island... |

Net fishing is an important component of the artisanal fishery of the Seychelles. It is composed of beach seine, encircling and set gillnets. This report reviews net fishery and its impact on the environment and fish stocks and provides a framework for its management. There are no current management measures for the traditional net fisheries except that all nets above 50 metres requires a license with a lead seal bearing the licence number. Certain irresponsible uses of these nets have ben acknowledged, principally the 'Met outaz' fishing strategy, incidental catch of marine mammals and the presence of commercially important juvenile fish in the beach seine fishery. SFA has addresses these issues rationally and management options are explored followed by... |

Anthropogenic pressures on the coral reefs of Tanzania are high. Over-exploitation, destructive fishing practices, unplanned tourism and high sedimentation load are amongst the most evident contributing factors whilst the poor economy and increased human population density along the coast is an underlying problem. There is a clear need for alternative sources of livelihood and effective ways to manage coral reef resources sustainably. Mariculture is becoming a common component in coastal zone management in Tanzania. |
