The effect of nutrient supply on the baking quality of organic wheat cultivars Organic Eprints
Kidmose, Ulla; Jensen , Sidsel; Mejnertsen, Peter; Jørgensen, Johannes Ravn; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
Six different of cultivars of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum cv.: Thaifun, Triso, Thasos and Amaretto), Spelt (Triticum spelta cv.) and Emmer (Triticum dicoccum cv.) were cultivated in an organic study using six different organic compost types (two different household waste composts, sewage sludge compost, fruit and vegetable compost and two different renescience compost types) and one control with no manure applied. Bread was baked with flour from each of the samples. The protein content, the gluten content and the Falling Number (FN) were measured for the flour samples and specific volume, the sensory quality and instrumental measured hardness were measured on the bread samples. Different compost types resulted in significant differences in the content...

Using Viscum album extracts (ISCADOR) for successful management of neoplasms of the skin in horses and cats in consideration of aspects relevant to human medicine. Organic Eprints
Klocke, Peter; Biegel, Ulrike; Clottu, Ophélie; Ramos, Mac; Gerber, Vinzenz; Ruess-Melzer, Katja.
Background: Mistletoe extracts (Viscum album extracts, VAE) such as ISCADOR, have been used successfully in human oncology for many years. In veterinary medicine, there have been reports of successful treatment, but scientific data on efficacy are lacking. Two studies were therefore conducted to assess whether VAE can serve as an adjunct to standard treatment in horses and cats. Methods: As part of a placebo-controlled double-blind study (study 1), 53 horses with equine sarcoid (a solitary or multifocal skin tumor) were treated with VAE pini (pine mistletoe) in progressively increasing doses (n=32) or with a sodium chloride solution (n=21). Three times a week for 15 weeks. All horses were observed over a period of 12 months for tumor recurrence and cure....

Soil Biological Activity Contributing to Phosphorus Availability in Vertisols under Long-Term Organic and Conventional Agricultural Management Organic Eprints
Bhat, Nisar, A.; Riar, Amritbir; Aketi, Ramesh; Iqbal, Sanjeeda; Sharma, Mahaveer P.; Sharma, Sanjay K.; Bhullar, Gurbir S..
Mobilization of unavailable phosphorus (P) to plant available P is a prerequisite to sustain crop productivity. Although most of the agricultural soils have sufficient amounts of phosphorus, low availability of native soil P remains a key limiting factor to increasing crop productivity. Solubilization and mineralization of applied and native P to plant available form is mediated through a number of biological and biochemical processes that are strongly influenced by soil carbon/organic matter, besides other biotic and abiotic factors. Soils rich in organic matter are expected to have higher P availability potentially due to higher biological activity. In conventional agricultural systems mineral fertilizers are used to supply P for plant growth, whereas...

Factoring in the forgotten role of renewables in CO2 emission trends using decomposition analysis Organic Eprints
Mohlin, Kristina; Camuzeaux, Jonathan R.; Müller, Adrian; Schneider, Marius; Wagner, Gernot.
This paper introduces an approach for separately quantifying the contributions from renewables in decomposition analysis. So far, decomposition analyses of the drivers of national CO2 emissions have typically considered the combined energy mix as an explanatory factor without an explicit consideration or separation of renewables. As the cost of renewables continues to decrease, it becomes increasingly relevant to track their role in CO2 emission trends. Index decomposition analysis, in particular, provides a simple approach for doing so using publicly available data. We look to the U.S. as a case study, highlighting differences with the more detailed but also more complex structural decomposition analysis. Between 2007 and 2013, U.S. CO2 emissions...

Cross-habitat usage by crop aphids and their parasitoids in the cropnoncrop interface in an organic vegetable farm. Organic Eprints
Jaureguiberry, Pedro; Buffa, Liliana M.; Delfino, Miguel A..
Plant-aphid-parasitoid interactions and parasitism rates were assessed in adjacent cultivated and noncultivated habitats in an organic vegetable farm in a chaco serrano woodland, Córdoba, Argentina. Seven aphid species on eight vegetable species were found in the cultivated habitat. Macrosiphum euphorbiae was present on all vegetable species. Four parasitoid species were recorded, of which Diaretiella rapae was the most common. It provided 21.32% of parasitism on Brevicoryne brassicae. In the non-cultivated habitat, 36 plant species hosted 22 aphid species and five parasitoid species. The aphid Myzus persicae was present on 17 plant species of eight different families. Macrosiphoniella artemisiae was the most abundant aphid species, with the associated...

Effects of agricultural production systems and their components on protein profiles of potato tubers Organic Eprints
Lehesranta, Satu J.; Koistinen, Kaisa M.; Massat, Nathalie; Davies, Howard V.; Shepherd, Louise V. T.; McNicol, James W.; Cakmak, Ismail; Cooper, Julia; Lück, Lorna; Kärenlampi, Sirpa O.; Leifert, Carlo.
A range of studies have compared the level of nutritionally relevant compounds in crops from organic and nonorganic farming systems, but there is very limited information on the effect of farming systems and their key components on the protein composition of plants. We addressed this gap by quantifying the effects of different farming systems and key components of such systems on the protein profiles of potato tubers. Tuber samples were produced in the Nafferton factorial systems study, a group of long-term, replicated factorial field experiments designed to identify and quantify the effect of fertility management methods, crop protection practices and rotational designs used in organic, low input and conventional production systems. Protein profiles were...

Effects of garden management practices, by different types of gardeners, on human wellbeing and ecological and soil sustainability in Swiss cities Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Lewis, Olivia; Bauer, Nicole; Fliessbach, Andreas; Frey, David; Lichtsteiner, Stéphanie; Moretti, Marco; Tresch, Simon; Young, Christopher; Zanetta, Andrea; Stolze, Matthias.
This is a pre-print of an article published in Urban Ecosystems. The final authenticated version is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11252-018-0806-2. The aim of this exploratory study is to address this research gap by identifying the characteristics of gardens and the management practices of gardeners that enhance the outcomes of gardening, which we separate into three dimensions: human wellbeing, biodiversity, and soil quality. Data were collected from 18 gardens in Zurich, Switzerland and a typology of gardeners was identified, which included ‘conservationist’, ‘functional’, ‘minimum effort’, ‘child-friendly’, and ‘aesthetic’ gardeners. The conservationist gardeners were found to have, on average, the highest species richness in their...

The effect of autumn ridging and inter-row subsoiling on potato tuber yield and quality Organic Eprints
Henriksen, Christian Bugge; Mølgaard, Jens Peter; Rasmussen, Jesper.
Autumn ridging is a modified version of the ridge tillage system. Instead of setting up ridges during the growing season, they are established in autumn and left for the winter. Previous studies have documented positive effects of autumn ridging on potato yield and we hypothesize that applying subsoiling could enhance these effects. To determine the effect of autumn ridging and inter-row subsoiling on potato yield and quality a field experiment was conducted on sandy soil from 2001-2003. Autumn ridging showed comparable yields to ploughing and significantly reduced the incidence of black scurf from 2.5% to 2.2%. Inter-row subsoiling in the growing season significantly increased marketable potato tuber yield from 84.4 hkg/ha to 96.3 hkg/ha and reduced the...

Fertilizer value of urine in pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima L.)cultivation Organic Eprints
Pradhan, Surendra K.; Pitkänen, Susanna; Heinonen-Tanski, Helvi.
The fertilizer value of human urine was compared with mineral fertilizer in pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) cultivation at a dose of 113 kg N ha-1 with no-fertilization used as control. The growth of the vine was better in urine fertilized pumpkins than in mineral fertilized and non-fertilized pumpkins. Total fruit biomass was higher in mineral fertilized plants compared to urine fertilized and non-fertilized pumpkins. Urine fertilized pumpkins may have suffered from lower potassium or higher chloride, thus they produced fewer flowers and fruits. However, total fruit biomass and the number of fruits were slightly higher in urine fertilized plants than in their non-fertilized counterparts, i.e. 17.2 t ha-1 more pumpkin could be produced with urine fertilizer....

Knowledge Asymmetries Between Research and Practice: A Social Systems Approach to Implementation Barriers in Organic Arable Farming Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Thorsøe, Martin H.; Sørensen, Peter; Melander, Bo; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Fog, Erik.
Research in organic cropping systems has identified basic principles for increasing the robustness and production level of organic arable systems. But even though farmers know these principles, they have not implemented them in practice. This paper aims to improve our understanding of this “knowledge gap” using the theory of knowledge asymmetries, and discusses the implications for research, extension and practice. The paper is based on interviews with 10 organic arable farms focused on how to understand the barriers from the perspective and context of the farming system. The findings show that some barriers are due to lack of knowledge of suggested actions, calling for more ordinary dissemination. But this cannot at all explain all the barriers. The...

Long-term amendment of urban and animal wastes equivalent to more than 100 years of application had minimal effect on plant uptake of potentially toxic elements Organic Eprints
López-Rayo, Sandra; Laursen, Kristian H.; Lekfeldt, Jonas D.S.; Grazie, Fabio D.; Magid, Jakob.
Urban waste products such as sewage sludge and organic household waste compost have a potential as fertilizers in agriculture, but evidence from historical field experiments performed in England and Germany with sewage sludge as fertilizer pointed towards negative effects of sludge-derived heavy metal accumulation on soil microbiota and plants. However, sewage sludge has improved in quality during the last half century and source separation of organic household waste has been shown to decrease the concentration of heavy metals in composts made from organic waste. This alongside a growing awareness on the benefits of an increased degree a recycling of nutrients from urban areas to agricultural soils led to the establishment of the CRUCIAL field trial in...

Effect of low and ultra-low temperature applications during freezing and frozen storage on quality parameters for fish Organic Eprints
Tolstorebrov, Ignat; Eikevik, Trygve Magne; Bantle, Michael.
The article reviews recent investigations in the application of ultra-low temperatures for high-quality long-term storage of fish. Changes in fish quality were discussed with respect to thermal events, which occur at low and ultra-low temperatures. Excellent stability of proteins was found at temperatures below the end of freezing point, when the unfrozen water content is at its minimum. Lipid oxidation was inhibited by preventing oxygen penetration to fish tissues rather than decreasing storage temperature. Thus, a significant part of fish oils remains unfrozen until temperatures of −110.0°C. The recommended storage temperature for high-quality long-term storage of fish is −35.0°C. Further decreasing storage temperature is unnecessary for industrial needs.
