This study evaluates the bioactivity of the crude ethanol extract and ethyl acetate, hexane and chloroform fractions obtained from Eugenia uniflora leaves using the hepatopancreas of Oreochromis niloticus L. as an experimental model. The ethanol extract and fractions were administered to the fish orally with their feed. Twenty-four hours later, the fish were sacrificed and their livers dissected, fixed in neutral formalin, embedded in paraffin and sectioned. Histological analyses were performed using Masson's trichrome and Haematoxylin-Eosin. Histochemical studies were performed using Feulgen, PAS (Periodic Acid Schiff) and PAS + salivary amylase and Sudan IV stain. The qualitative analysis of the material showed that the crude extract and the ethyl,... |

The seasonal adaptation of the teleost Cyprinus carpio to the cyclical changes of its habitat demands physiological compensatory responses. The process involves profound nucleolar adjustments and remarkable changes in rRNA synthesis, which affects ribosomal biosynthesis. In this context, we have demonstrated that the synthesis of several proteins involved in ribosomal biogenesis as protein kinase CK2, ribosomal protein L41 and nucleolin, as well as U3 snoRNP, are differentially regulated in summer-acclimatized carp compared to the cold-season adapted fish. To understand the mechanisms involved in the seasonal regulation of rRNA gene transcription, we have been studying the carp rDNA cistron structure. Because the cis-elements that regulate the expression... |

This study aimed to evaluate population abundance patterns and the main events in the reproductive cycle of Loricariichthys platymetopon at Saraiva Lagoon, Ilha Grande National Park, MS-PR, Brazil. Monthly samplings were conducted from October 2004 to September 2005 in three sections of the lagoon: entrance, middle and end, which resulted in the capture of 175 individuals. Spatial and temporal variation in abundance was obtained through CPUE (number of captured individuals/1000 m² of gillnets in 12 hours). The reproductive tactics considered were: duration, time and location of spawning, oocyte diameter and fecundity. The highest relative abundance was recorded in February, in the middle section of the lagoon, and the reproductive period lasted from... |

The Floresta Nacional de Ipanema is located on the southeast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and belongs to the cities of Araçoiaba da Serra, Iperó and Capela do Alto. It extends over an area of 5,069 ha surrounded by several streams, small lakes, the Ipanema river and the Hedberg dam. The fish species in this area were sampled between 1993 and 2012 in several isolated studies, with the use of gill nets and sieves. Fifty species of fish were registered, 43 native and 7 non-native (Cyprinus carpio, Piaractus mesopotamicus, Brycon cephalus, Triportheus nematurus, Clarias gariepinus, Tilapia rendalli and Poecilia vivipara), distributed in seven Orders, 21 Families and 41 Genera. The present study aimed at cataloguing the fish species in the Ipanema... |

Abstract: A Longnose stingray Hypanus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) embryo with a major asymmetrical morphological abnormality to its pectoral fin was obtained from commercial shrimp fisher's bycatch, off the coast of the Amazon River Mouth in northern Brazil. The specimen and the deformity, which would presumably have impeded its long-term survival, are described and documented in detail. We herein provide the first report of an abnormal individual of this species for the Brazilian coast. |

Abstract: This study aimed to present a checklist of marine fishes from coastal environments of the Island of Santa Catarina, including comments on the zoogeographic affinities, conservation status of each species, and functional groups. A total of 169 fish species belonging to 30 orders and 58 families were recorded. The most speciose families were Sciaenidae, Carangidae and, Engraulidae, representing 26,62% of the recorded species. Anchoa was the richest genus, followed by Sphoeroides and Cynoscion. Most of the species have their distribution limited to the western Atlantic, and two groups of fish were distinguished according to the species distributions: 1) species occurring in the Caribbean and in the Brazilian Province; and 2) Transatlantic species.... |

This study aimed to conduct an inventory of fish assemblages in small streams that are tributaries of large reservoirs in three previously unstudied regions of the Upper Paraná River basin. We sampled 117 streams from 1st to 3rd order in Araguari (Nova Ponte hydropower plant reservoir), Paranaíba (São Simão reservoir) and Grande (Volta Grande reservoir) drainages. In total, 20,696 specimens belonging to 100 species, 53 genera, 20 families and six orders were collected. Of these, 11,530 specimens and 41 species were recorded in Araguari, whereas 17 were exclusive to this drainage. In Grande drainage, 3,537 individuals belonging to 41 species (11 exclusive) and in Paranaíba, 5,629 specimens and 67 species (38 exclusive) were sampled. The mean richness per... |

The opportunistic predation on the fishes Astyanax fasciatus and Crenicichla sp. entangled in gill net by the aeglid crabs Aegla grisella and Aegla singularis was observed in rivers of southern Brazil. These events occurred in two rivers located at the National Forest of Passo Fundo, in Mato Castelhano municipality, Rio Grande do Sul State and Tangará municipality, Santa Catarina State. In both places the fish showed similar wound pattern, with eyes and fins being consumed first. However, predation of the whole body was also recorded, probably due to the high number of aeglid crabs feeding on the same individual. This record intended to contribute for understanding the natural diet of these crabs in freshwater environments. |

The aim of the present study was to evaluate factors that may favor the coexistence of three endemic species of Astyanax (Astyanax bifasciatus,Astyanax minor and Astyanax gymnodontus) in Segredo Reservoir (Iguaçu River, Paraná State, Brazil), and to test the hypothesis that these species share food resources, being the dietary variations related to morphological characteristics. Fish were collected at three samplings sites in 1993 and 1994, during the first year after the filling phase of the reservoir. The diet was assessed using stomach content analysis and ecomorphology by ecomorphological indices. Diet and ecomorphology data were ordinated by multivariate techniques (DCA and PCA, respectively), aiming to characterize trophic guilds and identify... |

Abstract The drainages of the Iguaçu River basin, as well as the main channel of the river, have peculiar characteristics resulting from geomorphological processes in this area, including the formation of the Iguaçu River Falls. This slope in the lower portion of the basin is a biogeographical barrier to many organisms. In this study was inventoried the fish fauna of streams of the lower Iguaçu River basin, evaluating possible differences in the species composition upstream and downstream of this biogeographical barrier. Sampling were conducted between 2004 and 2013, in five streams, three upstream and two downstream of the Iguaçu River Falls, using electrofishing. The nMDS analysis was run to investigate possible groupings of similar fauna between the... |
