The strategic turn of Organic Farming in Europe : from a resource based to an entrepreneurial approach of Organic Marketing Initiatives Organic Eprints
Sylvander, Bertil; Schieb-Bienfait, Nathalie.
This chapter explores the Organic farming’s development potential in Europe by analysing the enterprises capacities to reach a workable structure of the supply chains, in order to market good products at reasonable prices. This study has been carried out in the framework of an European project (OMIaRD), which aimed to assess the impact of the Organic Marketing Initiatives on Rural Development. The results show that, after a growing phase, most of the Organic Marketing Initiatives meet a strategic turn point, linked to their ability to face logistic problems, linked to an increasing of collected, processed and marketed volumes. This strategic turn point leads them to take decisions together with their stakeholders, so as the economic and ethical...

Reducing Emissions in Croatia – the Costs of Mitigation Organic Eprints
Landau, Seth; Znaor, Darko.
In order to avoid dangerous climate change resulting from an increase in temperature of over 2oC, global GHG emissions must be cut by 50-85% by 2050. Croatia’s trajectory for emissions growth in the Business as Usual (BAU) case is estimated to result in 42 million tonnes of CO2e in 2020 – a significant increase from today. The EU has committed to reducing emissions by 20% by 2020. Croatia has committed to reducing emissions by an average of 5% for the period 2008-2012 from a baseline level of 36 million tonnes under the Kyoto Protocol. Croatia will also share at least part of the EU commitment for 2020, especially with respect to emissions from major point sources such as power plants and industrial sources. The energy sector is the largest source of GHG...

Significance of Seed and Root Crop Properties in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Blaha, Ladislav.
The significance of the seed and root properties grows in organic and in ecological agriculture due to lower level of agrotechnical input. When compared with conventional agriculture, seed germination takes place in relatively "worse conditions" in the low input system and therefore seeds of cultivars of high quality, vitality, efficiency of water-use and with resistance to soil stresses during germination, must be used. A similar problem exists in organic agriculture when root growth and development takes place in relatively "worse conditions"and therefore the root system must have the optimum structure, depth of penetration, efficient nutrient uptake and their transport, increased resistance to soil stress, good growth energy and optimal ratio to...

Characterization of arbuscular mycorrhizal communities in roots of vineyard plants Organic Eprints
Drain, Alice; Bonneau, Laurent; Recorbet, Ghislaine; van Tuinen, Diederik; Wipf, Daniel; Courty, Pierre-Emmanuel.
We developed a new protocol to study arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) communities in Bordeaux vineyards in a standardized way, in order to compare results obtained over years and between locations. To this end, we first used grapevine root samples instead of soil samples to avoid AMF spores or hyphae interacting with cover plants. We next increased the number of grapevine samples to obtain more representative coverage of AMF communities while decreasing variability intra-vineyard, especially for the larger parcels. In addition, we adapted the DNA extraction protocol dedicated to soil samples to grapevine roots, as a way to increase the yield and the purity of samples. These features, coupled to the choice of the LSU-D2 region as the molecular marker for...

Neue Aufgaben der Vertrauensbildung in der Ökologischen Landwirtschaft Organic Eprints
Oppermann, Rainer; Rahmann, Gerold.

Andersen, Anne Holst; Hjelmar, Ulf.

Barth, Kerstin; Murk, Katrin; Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Volling, Otto; Weiler, Martin; Weiß, Martin; Drerup, Christoph; Krömker, Volker.
The use of bedding materials of natural source is a requirement of the EU regulation of organic husbandry considering the needs of animals for dry comfortable lying areas. However, organic bedding materials provide an environment for mastitis pathogens, too and therefore increase the risk of intramammary infections if not well managed.

Does it make sense to buy locally produced organic products? Organic Eprints
Vanzetti, David; Wynen, Els.
Enthusiasts of the organically grown food industry often espouse a preference for produce grown in the local region, and suggest that consumers should buy locally produced organic products. One reason consumers buy organic products is to improve the environment. There is a perception that transporting foods long distances is wasteful, in part because transport costs are not appropriately priced to include all externalities. Does this make sense? The focus of this paper is to examine conceptually how trade can contribute to a more environmentally-sound way of supplying agricultural products to consumers, even when transport costs are adequately taken into account. An example from the international wheat trade illustrates this point.

Entwicklungen & Trends. Mehr Interesse am Ökolandbau – aber es dauert... Organic Eprints
Hermanowski, Robert.

Qualitätsuntersuchungen an ökologisch erzeugten Produkten Organic Eprints
Aulrich, Karen.

Schumacher, Ulrich; Rahmann, Gerold.

Biocontrol potential of entomopathogenic nematodes against nut and orchard pests Organic Eprints
Kuske, S.; Daniel, Claudia; Wyss, Eric; Sarraquigne, J.; Jermini, M.; Conedera, M.; Grunder, M..
Semi-field and field experiments were carried out to evaluate the biological control potential of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) against grubs in hazelnut, chestnut and cherry orchards. Mortality of hazelnut weevils in interred containers treated with 2.2x106 infective juveniles (IJ) m-2 of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora was 75.4%. H. indica caused 65.2% and S. feltiae 43.3% pest mortality, but numbers were not significantly different from the untreated control (33.4%). Mortality of the chestnut weevil was slightly increased in S. carpocapsae (2x106 IJ m-2) treated containers (44.6%) compared to untreated control containers (39.2%), but differences were either not significant. Soil applications against the European cherry fruit fly did not lead to any...

“Please Pick Me” - How Incredible Edible Todmorden is repurposing the commons for open source food and agrobiodiversity Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
The remarkable project that is Incredible Edible Todmorden (IET) raises the question of food self-sufficiency for Todmorden - and by extension, for the rest of Britain. In March 2008 a public meeting was held in Todmorden, an English village in West Yorkshire (north west England). The topic was food - and the premise was “we need to talk”. That meeting attracted about sixty attendees, it was a local response to the growing awareness that Britain needs to have a conversation about food. It was a meeting against the tide of the Americanisation of the British diet with fizz and fat, of the Tescoisation of food retailing, of the dissociation of food from its agricultural and geographic provenance, as well as of a centuries-late response to the offshoring of...

How Organic Agriculture Contributes to Sustainable Development Organic Eprints
Kilcher, Lukas.
Organic agriculture can contribute to meaningful socio-economic and ecologically sustainable development, especially in poorer countries. On one hand, this is due to the application of organic principles, which means efficient management of local resources (e.g. local seed varieties, manure, etc.) and therefore cost-effectiveness. On the other hand, the market for organic products – at local and international level – has tremendous growth prospects and offers creative producers and exporters in the South excellent opportunities to improve their income and living conditions. Establishing whether organic agriculture is a viable alternative for a particular holding needs to be carried out on a case-by-case basis.

The World of Organic Agriculture – Density-equalizing Map Organic Eprints
Paull, John; Hennig, Benjamin.
The World Map of Organic Agriculture presents countries as proportional in size to their share of the total of world organic hectares. Such a map can be referred to as an equal-area cartogram or a density-equalising map. Equal-density cartograms are a tool for presenting a fresh view of tabulated geographic data sets. The World Map of Organic Agriculture accounts for all of the hectares of organically managed agricultural land (certified organic and in-conversion organic) reported by FiBL and IFOAM in 'The World of Organic Agriculture - Statistics & Emerging Trends 2013'. The map visually reveals relationships between the territories of the world and highlights the regional strengths and weaknesses of the global diffusion of organic agriculture. The...
