Continuous development is needed within the farm to reach the goal of good animal health and welfare in organic livestock farming. The very different conditions between countries call for models that are relevant for different farming types and can be integrated into local practice and be relevant for each type of farming context. This article reviews frameworks, principles and practices for animal health and welfare planning which are relevant for organic livestock farming. This review is based on preliminary analyses carried out within a European project (acronym ANIPLAN) with participants from seven countries. The process begins with gathering knowledge about the current status within a given herd as background for making decisions and planning future...

Monitoring of Finnish arable land: changes in soil quality between 1987 and 1998 Organic Eprints
Mäkelä-Kurtto, Ritva; Sippola, Jouko.
This study is part of the long-term monitoring of Finnish arable land and it is based on soil analyses of 705 monitoring sites sampled in 1998. The same sites were sampled twice previously,in 1974 and 1987. We describe here the state of the Finnish cultivated soils in 1998 and changes in soil quality since 1987. The samples were analysed for organic C, volume weight, pH, P, K, Ca, S, Mg, Al, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Se and Zn.Macronutrients were extracted with 0.5 M ammonium acetate + 0.5 M acetic acid (pH 4.65) and most micronutrients, Al and heavy metals with the same solution + 0.02 M Na 2 EDTA. Hot water was used to extract B and Se. From 1987 to 1998, soil P, Ca, Mg, S, Cr, Cu, Zn, volume weight and electrical conductivity increased and soil K,...

Ileal digestibility of sunflower meal, pea, rapeseed cake, and lupine in pigs Organic Eprints
Nørgaard, J.V.; Fernández, José A.; Jørgensen, Henry.
The standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of CP and AA was evaluated in soybean (Glycine max) meal, sunflower (Helianthus annuus) meal, rapeseed cake, and field pea (Pisum sativum) using 10 pigs and in lupine (Lupinus angustifolius) using 7 pigs. Pigs were fitted with either a T-cannula or a steered ileocecal valve-cannula. Diets contained 170 to 186 g CP/kg DM. Endogenous losses of CP and AA were estimated by feeding a N-free diet. The SID was calculated using the average of Cr2O3 and TiO2 as indigestible markers and corrected for type of cannula. The SID of CP was greater (P < 0.05) for soybean meal and pea compared to sunflower meal, rapeseed cake, and lupine. The SID of Lys and His were lowest (P < 0.05) in sunflower meal, and the SID of Met and...

High densities of Collembola and mites in organic fields with undersown catch crops Organic Eprints
Axelsen, J.; Thorup-Kristensen, K.; Askegaard, M.; Krogh, P.H..
The abundance and species composition of soil living mites and Collembola were investigated in autumn and winter in field plots with five different types of catch crops and a control plot that was kept free of vegetation. The catch crops, chicory, white clover, garden lupine, and perennial ryegrass were undersown in barley while fodder radish was sown after harvest .The investigation was carried out at a site on sandy loam and a site on coarse sand. At the sandy site densities up to about 250.000 and 100.000 m-2 of mites and Collembola, respectively, were found. At the sandy loam site densities were up to 120.000 mites m-2 and 150.000 Collembola m-2. The densities of both microarthropods were extremely high with up to 120,000 Collembola m-2 and 90,000...

Parameters affecting the environmental impact of a range of dairy farming systems in Denmark, Germany and Italy Organic Eprints
Guerci, Matteo; Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Bava, Luciana; Zucali, Maddalena; Schönbach, Philipp; Kristensen, Troels.
The environmental impact of 12 dairy farms in Denmark, Germany and Italy was evaluated using an LCA approach and the most important parameters influencing their environmental sustainability were identified. The farms represent different production methods (organic vs. conventional), summer feeding systems (confinement vs. pasture) and annual production levels (6275–10,964 kg ECM cow−1). There was large variability in stocking rates (1.1–11.0 LU ha−1) among farms, which has a major impact on the production per unit area of farmland, on feed self-sufficiency and on farm surplus of nitrogen. The proportion of grassland on farmland used for forage production or pasture varied from 0 to 100%. The lowest global warming potential (GWP), acidification,...

Are Standards and Regulations of Organic Farming Moving Away from Small Farmers’ Knowledge? Organic Eprints
Vogl, Christian; Kilcher, Lukas; Schmidt, Hanspeter.
Organic farming is a promising agricultural method with positive effects on the human ecological and social environment. Governments have taken over a major role in defining organic farming by creating legal standards. Many countries all over the world have established a certification and accreditation system in order to protect the justified expectations of consumers with regard to processing and controlling the product quality of organic goods and to protecting producers from fraudulent trade practices. As they are relevant to international trade, these standards do not only influence the organic farming movement on the national level but also have a converse impact across national borders. Organic farming was established in a bottom-up process as...

Microbial biomass and acid phosphomonoesterase activity in soils of the Central Highlands of Kenya Organic Eprints
Kiboi, M. N.; Ngetich, K. F.; Mugendi, D. N.; Muriuki, A.; Adamtey, N.; Fliessbach, A..
Soil biological properties are the most sensitive soil quality indicators that respond quickly to short-term soil fertility management changes. We studied the combined effects of tillage and soil external inputs on total soil organic carbon and nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN) and acid phosphomonoesterase activity (ACP). This was done in Meru South and Kandara sub-counties in Kenya for three consecutive cropping seasons. Tillage was the main factor [minimum (D0) and conventional (D15)], and soil external inputs were the sub-factors: sole mineral fertiliser (F), crop residues + mineral fertiliser (RF), crop residues + animal manure + legume intercrop Dolichos lablab L. (RML), crop residues + mineral fertiliser + animal manure...

Scope and precision of sustainability assessment approaches to food systems Organic Eprints
Schader, C.; Grenz, J.; Meier, M. S.; Stolze, M..
With sustainability within food systems becoming an increasingly important issue, several approaches that claim to assess the sustainability of farms, farming systems, and supply chains have been developed. Looking more closely at these sustainability impact assessment approaches, we discerned considerable differences between them in terms of scope, the level of assessment, and the precision of indicators used for impact assessment. Our aim was to classify and analyze a range of available sustainability impact assessment approaches with respect to scope and precision. From a total of 35 sustainability assessment approaches, we selected 6 for a detailed comparison. From our analysis, we concluded that there are 3 different types of trade-offs in these...

Diversidade de Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) em plantas aromáticas (Apiaceae) como sítios de sobrevivência e reprodução em sistema agroecológico. Organic Eprints
Lixa, Alice T; Campos, Juliana M; Resende, André L S; Silva, Joice C; Almeida, Maxwell M T B; Menezes, Elen L Aguiar.
Studies show that Apiaceae may provide concentrated vital resources for predator insects, stimulating their abundance, diversity and persistence in agricultural systems, thereby increasing their effi ciency as biological control agents. Among the predatory insects, Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) on many different species both as larvae and adults, complementing their diet with pollen and/or nectar. This study aimed to determine the diversity and relative abundance of Coccinellidae species visiting plants of Anethum graveolens (dill), Coriandrum sativum (coriander) and Foeniculum vulgare (sweet fennel) (all Apiaceae), particularly in their blooming seasons, and to evaluate the potential of these aromatic species for providing the resources for survivorship...

The challenges of innovation for sustainable agriculture and rural development: Integrating local actions into European policies with the Reflective Learning Methodology Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Home, Robert.
The linear view of innovation in agricultural contexts is being replaced by systems approaches. Agricultural producers are seen as important actors rather than merely consumers of the technologies that are generated by agricultural research and transferred by education and extension services for subsequent adoption. This new understanding of innovation for sustainable agriculture is however not reflected within the European policy framework, so learning and innovation networks for sustainable agriculture (LINSA) have formed in response. The support needs of these innovation networks are poorly understood which hampers their integration into policy. A participatory action research approach – the Reflective Learning Methodology was developed and applied to...

Consumer attitudes towards new technique for preserving organic meat using herbs and berries Organic Eprints
Haugaard, Pernille; Grunert, Klaus; Hansen, Flemming; Jensen, Martin.
This study aims to explore consumers´ attitude toward a new preservation technique using herbs and berries in organic meat production. This seems relevant both for the organic as well as the conventional meat producers, as this technique enable the organic producers to reduce the salt content in meat products and for the conventional producers to minimize the amount of chemical additives. Consumer acceptability toward the preservation technique using herbs and berries and further the willingness to buy products preserved with herbs and berries were exploited through a qualitative approach by means of three focus groups. We found that in general, most of the participants are positive toward the preservation technique using herbs and berries and there are...
