Interactions among insect-resistant soybean genotypes extracts with populations of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) susceptible and resistant to its nucleopolyhedrovirus Anais da ABC (AABC)
Piubelli,Giorla C.; Moscardi,Flávio; Hoffmann-Campo,Clara B..
Anticarsia gemmatalis nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgMNPV) is being used in Brazil as a biological insecticide. Host plant resistance of soybean to insects is been searched for and some authors have mentioned the interference of plant chemistry in virus efficiency. Interactions among soybean extracts of genotypes used as a source of resistance (PI 274454 and PI 227687) with different AgMNPV concentrations in populations of A. geatalis susceptible (S) and resistant (R) to the virus were studied at laboratory condition. Higher mortality was observed when larvae fed on diets with extracts of the soybean genotypes compared with those fed on a plain diet (control). The mean lethal concentration (LC50) was reduced about 10 ties in the S-population fed on diets...

Quantification of anti-nutritional factors and their correlations with protein and oil in soybeans Anais da ABC (AABC)
BUENO,RAFAEL D.; BORGES,LEANDRO L.; GOD,PEDRO I.V. GOOD; PIOVESAN,NEWTON D.; TEIXEIRA,ARLINDO I.; CRUZ,COSME DAMIÃO; BARROS,EVERALDO G. DE.
ABSTRACT Soybeans contain about 30% carbohydrate, mainly consisting of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and oligosaccharides. NSP are not hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract of monogastric animals. These NSP negatively affect the development of these animals, especially the soluble fraction. This work aimed to establish a method to quantify NSP in soybeans, using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and to estimate correlations between NSP, oligosaccharides, protein and oil. Sucrose, raffinose + stachyose, soluble and insoluble NSP contents were determined by HPLC. Oil and protein contents were determined by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The soluble PNAs content showed no significant correlation with protein, oil, sucrose and raffinose...

Isoflavonoid composition and biological activity of extracts from soybean seedlings treated by different elicitors Anais da ABC (AABC)
DURANGO,DIEGO; MURILLO,JENNIFER; ECHEVERRI,FERNANDO; ESCOBAR,GUSTAVO; QUIÑONES,WINSTON.
Abstract Time-course and dose-response experiments were carried out to establish the ability for synthesizing isoflavonoids of soybean seedlings (cv. Soyica P34) treated with salicylic (SA) and isonicotinic acids (INA). Then, 25 structurally-related compounds were evaluated for their isoflavonoid-eliciting activity. Next, the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of EtOAc-soluble fraction from soybean seedlings treated with some synthetic elicitors were determined. Results showed that the concentration of isoflavonoids in soybean seedlings was significantly increased by the application of SA and INA. The major isoflavonoids detected were the malonyl-glycosidic isoflavones, followed by genistin and daidzin. The isoflavone aglycones (genistein, daidzein,...

Intellectual property rights related to the genetically modified glyphosate tolerant soybeans in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Rodrigues,Roberta L; Lage,Celso L. S; Vasconcellos,Alexandre G.
The present work analyzes the different modalities of protection of the intellectual creations in the biotechnology agricultural field. Regarding the Brazilian legislations related to the theme (the Industrial Property Law - no. 9. 279/96 and the Plant Variety Protection Law - no. 9. 456/97), and based in the international treaties signed by Brazil, the present work points to the inclusions of each of them, as well as to their interfaces using as reference the case study of glyphosate tolerant genetically modified soybean. For this case study, Monsanto's pipelines patents were searched and used to analyze the limits of patent protection in respect to others related to the Intellectual Property (IP) laws. Thus, it was possible to elucidate the complex...

Medeiros,Maria A.; Schimidt,Francisco V.G.; Loiácono,Marta S.; Carvalho,Vinícius F.; Borges,Miguel.
The mortality of Euschistus heros (F.) at the egg stage was studied at the field. The experiments were carried out in Planaltina - D.F., Brazil, in 1993 and 1994, on sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivated following the soybean (Glycine max) crop season. Egg masses found in the field were marked and checked daily for four days, and taken to the laboratory to check the total number of eggs, eggs that failed to hatch and those parasitized or destroyed by predators. The incidence of parasitism in eggs of E. heros was high in 1993 (65%) and in 1994 (80%). Five species of parasitoids were recovered: Telenomus podisi Ashmead, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston), Trissolcus teretis Johnson, Trissolcus urichi Crawford (Scelionidae) and Eupelmus sp. (Eupelmidae). T....

Ocorrência do parasitóide Hexacladia smithii Ashmead em adultos de Euschistus heros (F.) no Brasil Anais da SEB
Corrêa-Ferreira,Beatriz S.; Nunes,Maria C.; Uguccioni,Luzilene D..
Parasitism of Euschistus heros (F.) adults was studied in Londrina, PR. Twenty males and 20 females were collected each week from November 1996 to December 1997. In the laboratory, adults were sexed and maintained in plastic box (12 x 12 cm) with humidity and soybean pods as food, and observed daily during 30 days. The encyrtid Hexacladia smithii Ash. was observed attacking the bugs, being the first register of parasitism by Hexacladia in this host. The natural incidence of parasitism varied from 0.6% to 39.5%. Higher abundance of the parasitoid occurred during December and January and it was drastically reduced (<1%) from May to September. Males and females were equally attacked by the parasitoid (14.7% and 11.9%, respectively). H. smithii is a...

Peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activities, phenolic acid contents, and allelochemicals-inhibited root growth of soybean Biol. Res.
HERRIG,VANESSA; FERRARESE,MARIA DE LOURDES L.; SUZUKI,LETÍCIA S.; RODRIGUES,JOÃO DOMINGOS; FERRARESE-FILHO,OSVALDO.
The influence of the allelochemicals ferulic (FA) and vanillic (VA) acids on peroxidase (POD, EC 1.11.1.7) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL, EC 4.3.1.5) activities and their relationships with phenolic acid (PhAs) contents and root growth of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) were examined. Three-day-old seedlings were cultivated in nutrient solution containing FA or VA (0.1 to 1 mM) for 48 h. Both compounds (at 0.5 and 1 mM) decreased root length (RL), fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) and increased PhAs contents. At 0.5 and 1 mM, FA increased soluble POD activity (18% and 47%, respectively) and cell wall (CW)-bound POD activity (61% and 34%), while VA increased soluble POD activity (33% and 17%) but did not affect CW-bound POD activity. At 1 mM, FA...

Screening of Colletotrichum (Ascomycota) isolates, causal agents of Soybean Anthracnose, for Laccase production Boletín de la Sociedad
Levin,L.; Ramos,A .M.; Parisi,M .; Gally,M..
Colletotrichum truncatum is the most common pathogen fungus associated with soybean anthracnose. Although the lignin-degrading enzyme laccase has been implicated in pathogenicity of a wide range of plant pathogenic fungi, its biological role in the Colletotrichum -soybean disease system is unknown. The extent of the infection in our country led us to examine laccase production in Argentinean Colletotrichum strains isolated from diseased soybean plants from different geographic locations. Ten strains (eight of them identified as C. truncatum) , were screened for in vitro laccase production. Only six of the isolates, all of them C. truncatum , produced laccase activity when cultured on a defined medium based on pectin and asparagine as carbon and nitrogen...

Genetic distances in soybean based on RAPD markers Bragantia
CORRÊA,RONAN XAVIER; ABDELNOOR,RICARDO VILELA; FALEIRO,FÁBIO GELAPE; CRUZ,COSME DAMIÃO; MOREIRA,MAURILIO ALVES; BARROS,EVERALDO GONÇALVES DE.
Four methods were applied to determine pairwise genetic distances among five soybean genotypes which are potential genitors for a mapping population. Additionally, individual plants from the most divergent pair of genotypes were evaluated by the RAPD technique to determine their degree of homozygosity. Genetic distances based on RAPD data were calculated by the modified Rogers' distance, and also by the following arithmetical complements of similarity: simple match, Nei and Li, and Gower. These genetic distances were similar, presenting a correlation coefficient ranging from 0.99 to 1.00. In all four methods lines UFV 91-717 and Ichigowase were the most divergent ones (4.53 to 21.43%). DNA samples from five plants from each of the two most divergent...

Water deficiency at different developmental stages of Glycine max can improve drought tolerance Bragantia
Kron,Alan Panaia; Souza,Gustavo Maia; Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos.
Developmental windows are specific periods of sensitivity during normal plant development in which a perturbation may be adaptively integrated. In these periods, sub-lethal environmental perturbations may improve the capacity to grow at lethal conditions. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that previous non-lethal water deficit applied in different developmental stages in soybean plants could enables them to improve the tolerance to environmental perturbations. In order to test this hypothesis we carried out an experiment with soybean plants submitted to water deficit in different stages of plant development, evaluating yield and physiological aspects. Our results indicated that water deficit experienced on V4 stage (vegetative) induces more...

Isolation and culture of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) microspores and pollen grains BABT
Rodrigues,Lia Rosane; Forte,Bianca de Camargo; Bodanese-Zanettini,Maria Helena.
In the last three decades, research on soybean microspore embryogenesis was restricted to anther culture, which presents limitations such as the small number of responsive microspores and the high embryogenic potential of sporophytic tissues. Therefore, a sequence of studies was performed to establish appropriate conditions for the isolation and culture of soybean microspores and pollen grains as an alternative to anther culture. First, a pollen and microspore isolation technique was developed using floral buds from four soybean cultivars (Bragg, IAS 5, MG/BR-46 Conquista and BRSMT Uirapuru). This technique allowed the establishment of cultures with satisfactory density and characteristics. Subsequently, different culture conditions were tested. Although...

Effect of temperature shock on soybean microspore embryogenesis BABT
Moraes,Ana Paula de; Bonadese-Zanettini,Maria Helena; Callegari-Jacques,Sídia Maria; Kaltchuk-Santos,Eliane.
In this study the effect of cold and heat shock on androgenetic induction in soybean anther culture was tested. Anthers of soybean were subjected to 4 and 33ºC, while the anthers used for control were maintained at 25ºC. Cytological analysis done during the 30 days of culture showed that frequencies of symmetrical binucleated and multicellular pollen grain did not differ among temperature treatments. Multicellular pollen grain could be formed by symmetrical division, as well as by assymetrical division. In relation to the embryo induction, the results of the treatments did not differ too. These results suggested that these treatments did not induce a sporophytic pathway in soybean.

Physiological quality in seeds obtained by topcrosses between vegetable soybean and grain type BABT
Yokomizo,Gilberto K.; Vello,Natal A..
Attempts were made to study the gene introgression for high physiological quality from adapted cultivars in the vegetable soybean (exotic). Promising results were obtained for all topocrosses, with increased in germination percentage in majority. General mean of the germination percentage in topcrosses with large seeds exotic parental showed an increase from 28 to 46%, and topcrosses with small seeds exotic parental, from 54 up to 60%, both cases compared to self pollinated exotic parental. Related to variance, the topcrosses showed higher values than the self pollinated exotic parental, showing to be possible the selecion of promising materials.
