The Effect of Sugar Price Policy on U.S. Imports of Processed Sugar-containing foods AgEcon
Jabara, Cathy L..
This paper examines the effects of sugar protection, as well as the effects of these other factors, on U.S. demand for imports of sugar-containing products. The paper also addresses two main issues: (1) whether substitution of alternative sweeteners has allowed U.S. food manufactures to reduce the competitive advantage provided to foreign manufactures by U.S. sugar policies, and (2) which countries -- developed or developing -- have been able to increase their exports of sugar-containing products to the United States. Import demand functions for four categories of sugar-containing processed foods -- canned fruits, confectionary, sweetened cocoa and chocolate, and bakery products are examined.

Database on European Agricultural Tariffs DBTAR AgEcon
Gallezot, Jacques.
Customs duties applied by the European Union on agricultural products differ greatly compared to WTO bound duties. This difference is essentially due to the importance of preferential regimes in the EU's trade agreements. It is estimated that nearly half of EU agricultural imports benefit from a preferential tariff (Gallezot, 2003). For this reason, an analysis of the tariffs applied by the EU cannot be limited to the multilateral framework of duties that respect the Most Favoured Nation clause but must be broadened to include all preferential systems. The objective of this project is to undertake a detailed assessment of European tariffs by relying on official regulations. The aim here is to realize a database which enables an easier analysis of all EU...

An analysis of agricultural trade policy reforms and their impact on the EU, China and New Zealand AgEcon
Saunders, Caroline M.; Wreford, Anita; Rasin, Shanika.
As a consequence of global changes to trade policy, there are likely to be significant impacts on international agricultural trade. Clearly producers in the European Union (EU) will experience considerable changes to the structure of their industry, and for a country such as New Zealand, heavily dependent on agricultural exports, changes to policy and markets have the potential to significantly affect the economy. The potential competition from China in terms of agricultural commodities as well as its potential as an export destination for NZ are also important considerations. This paper presents an analysis of the impact of both World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform in the agricultural sectors of the EU, New Zealand,...

Analyzing the Impact of Changes in Trade and Domestic Policies: The Case of the Soybean Complex AgEcon
Costa, Rafael F.; Xia, Yan; Susanto, Dwi; Rosson, C. Parr, III; Adcock, Flynn J..
This study analyzes the impacts of domestic and trade policy changes on the soybean complex using a Stochastic Equilibrium Displacement Model (SEDM). Three different policies, Loan Deficiency Payments (LDP), transportation costs and export taxes are considered in the analysis. The results indicate that Brazil benefits from a reduction in transportation costs and becomes more competitive in the global soybean market. Brazilian exports of soybeans increase due to relatively lower export prices. However, Brazil gains little improvement in the export competitiveness of the soybean joint products, soybean meal and oil. A lower U.S. LDP rate results in the loss of competitiveness for the United States in the world soybean market. Furthermore, the results show...

WHEAT QUALITY AND WHEAT YIELDS: TRADE-OFFS AMONG PRICE, YIELD, PROFIT, AND RISK AgEcon
Smith, Vincent H..
In this report, important wheat quality attributes and their links to varietal differences are identified, and their technical and economic importance to the milling and baking industries is examined. Wheat class and grading systems used in the United States and other countries are described, and the relationships between wheat classes and wheat varieties and between physical and wholesomeness attributes and grades are identified. The per bushel prices received by farmers' for their wheat depend on the classes and grades of wheat they produce. However, wheat classes and, to some degree, grades are linked to varietal choices and those choices also affect average per acre yields and year-to-year yield variability. Therefore, this report also examines the...

When Will U.S. Firms Become Major Dairy Exporters and Bigger Direct Investors in Foreign Dairy-Food Businesses? AgEcon
Dobson, William D.; Wagner, Jeffrey; Hintz, Rodney.
The prospects for substantially expanded dairy exports by U.S. firms are not bright for at least the current decade. The exceptions relate to exports of dried whey, whey fractions, dairy blends, selected specialty dairy products and nonfat dry milk. U.S. dairy exports are likely to continue to be low because U.S. prices for bulk dairy products are sharply higher than world prices. Unlike the situation for dairy exporting, the barriers to foreign direct investment by U.S. firms appear less daunting. The prevalence of successful foreign direct investments by the foreign firms described here suggests that a larger number of U.S. firms could engage in such investments successfully.

The Development and Future of EU Agricultural Trade Preferences for North-African and Near-East Countries AgEcon
Grethe, Harald; Nolte, Stephan; Tangermann, Stefan.
The EU recently completed negotiating a series of Association Agreements with Mediterranean countries. Trade preferences for agricultural goods granted under these Agreements, as well as under former arrangements, are analyzed by calculating the value of preference margins at several stages in the evolution of preferences. The total value of preference margins for all countries covered was about €130 million under the agreements of the mid-1970s and increased by 48 per cent until 1995; by 2000 this value declined by about 14 per cent due to reduced EU MFN tariffs. The extended preferences under the new Agreements more than compensate for this decline and will result in a total value of preference margins of €226 million once all Agreements have entered...

Allocation of Global Import Demand among the World's Largest Economies: Implications for Developing Countries AgEcon
Walters, Lurleen M.; Feleke, Shiferaw T..
The study implies that coffee producing countries will be worse off with the expansion of exports. Hence, we suggest that they pursue new marketing strategies that involve market segmentation, value-adding activities, and strengthening local and global organizations to establish direct market links with consumers and stabilize prices.

Australian Beef Exports: Dead or Alive? AgEcon
Rutherford, Arlene.
Northern Australia's live cattle exports to Southeast Asia have increased dramatically in recent years. In Australia's current political environment calling for greater domestic value-adding, the issue of potential trade-offs between Australia's live cattle and slaughtered beef exports are examined. From an investigation into the origins of Australia's live cattle export industry and the production and marketing of beef in Australia's major live cattle importing countries, it is concluded that the two industries supply separate segments of the market. Trade-offs between imported Australian beef and beef derived from imported Australian cattle are not significant issues at present.

Global Match: Helping Small Wineries Gain Access to Markets Worldwide AgEcon
Cholette, Susan.
As the United States is predicted to become the world's largest wine consuming nation by 2008 with consumers purchasing across all price segments, one might assume that Californian wineries should thrive in this market. However, regulations and consolidation effects often prevent small wineries from being able to reach the U.S. consumer and they face similar problems with exporting. These wineries must seek specialty distributors that represent lesser-known brands, usually by attending trade shows at great expense. In turn, specialty distributors face the daunting challenge of finding wineries that best satisfy their portfolios' needs. Given this problematic situation, can one provide assistance to these parties in their quest for finding appropriate...

The Mexican Sweeteners Market and Sugar Exports to the United States AgEcon
Andino, Jose; Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
This study analyzes the effect of Mexico's sugar exports on the U.S. sugar industry, which could reach over 250,000 MTRV in 2006 and substantially increase in subsequent years by substituting sugar for HFCS in soft drink products. Mexico's additional sugar exports would cause a substantial reduction of U.S. sugar price. Because of low prices of sugar, production of beet and cane sugar in the United States is expected to fall. Under these circumstances, social welfare in the United States may increase; however, welfare benefits may go to food processors rather than consumer. By contrast, increases in sugar imports would substantially hurt sugar beet and cane producers.

A Consistent Picture of Applied Protection Across the World AgEcon
Bouet, Antoine; Decreux, Yvan; Fontagne, Lionel; Jean, Sebastien; Laborde, David.
In order to provide with a consistent assessment of protection across the world in 2001, the MAcMap-HS6 database includes ad valorem equivalent measure of tariff duties and tariff rate quotas for 163 countries and 208 partners, at the six-digit level of the Harmonized System (5,111 products), and accounting for all preferential agreements. We first describe the methodology used to compute and aggregate ad valorem-equivalent applied tariff duties, well suited for analytical purposes. Special emphasis is put in minimizing the endogeneity bias in the aggregation procedure, and in acknowledging structural differences in export specialization. We then overview applied protection across the world, in terms of average as well as distribution. Protection...

The creation of dominant firm market power in the coconut oil export market AgEcon
Buschena, David E.; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
Legal and institutional changes that centralized control of the Philippine coconut oil refining and exporting industries enabled the Philippines to exercise some of its potential dominant-firm market power. If the elasticity of demand for coconut oil continues to increase. in part due to concerns about the health risks from eating saturated fats. Philippine exports will increase slightly while the price and Philippine revenue will fall significantly within the next decade.

GLOBAL MARKET STRATEGY IN THE CONFECTIONERY INDUSTRY: THE CASE OF HERSHEY FOODS CORPORATION AgEcon
Zhang, Chun.
This study uses Hershey Foods Corporation as a case to demonstrate how to formulate global product strategy to penetrate growing international markets. In recent years, confectionery markets have been growing around the world. Hershey Foods Corporation, the North American confectionery leader, however, has been experiencing some setbacks in international expansion. This study uses the global strategy framework (Yip, 1992) to analyze the strategic position and resources of Hershey Foods Corporation, and to diagnose confectionery industry globalization potential. The focus of the study is the formulation of global product strategies for Hershey's future expansion into strategically important markets. Benefits and costs of a global product strategy and the...
