Recent discussion surrounding organic agriculture (also referred to as organic farming) has turned from just whether it represents a viable alternative to conventional agriculture to whether it would be adopted by a significant percentage of farmers. After a beginning phase in which the adoption was mainly due to an ethically based choice of the farmer, the success in the market and the increasing demand for organic products are increasing the number of farmers converting their farming system. Despite the continuing importance of non-economic factors and the uncertainty given by short-term and mid-term fluctuations of prices, a decisive point is whether the conversion to organic farming may be worthwhile from an economic perspective. The aim of the paper... |

Bu araştırma, organik tarım prensiplerine göre açıkta üretimi yapılan yağlık biberin verim, bazı kalite özellikleri ile toprakların bazı fiziksel ve kimyasal özellikleri üzerine yeşil gübre, farklı dozlardaki sığır gübresi, hindi gübresi, bitki atıkları kompostu ve sertifikalı ticari organik gübrenin etkilerini konvansiyonel kontrol parselleri ile yarıştırmak suretiyle saptamak amacıyla Ege Tarımsal Araştırma Enstitüsü (Menemen) deneme arazisinde 2001-2003 yıllarında, 4 tekerrürlü olarak toplam 72 parselde, parselde 68 bitki olacak şekilde çakılı olarak yürütülmüştür. Denemede, adı geçen organik gübrelerin uygulanmaları sonucu toprak profilindeki (0-30/30-60/60-90 cm.) azot (N) ve nitrat (NO-3-N) birikim durumları, iki yıl boyunca sezon başı ve sonunda,... |

Organic farming is recognised in the European Union as one possible model to improve the sustainability of agriculture. During the 1990s the sector grew rapidly (to 3% of agricultural area in 2000), caused in part by policy support measures in member states and the EU. The paper summarises the development of the organic sector, discusses reasons for policy support, and reviews the main policy measures at EU and country level in three areas: legislation defining organic production, direct payments and other measures. It concludes that in future the integration of policy measures within countries and at EU level should be improved, in particular through the development of national and European action plans for organic farming. |

The organic movement may have gained a place in the spotlight of the mainstream media now, but it has not been like that for long. Since the 1950s, organic farmers operating at a grass roots level have devised, tested and shared production methods. They have codified a set of ideals into a pioneering best practice agricultural management system that addresses multiple community values. Niche markets have gradually been created, commonly based on trust and goodwill (formal certification did not begin until the 1960s and 1970s), and often using novel direct marketing strategies such as box schemes and community supported agriculture. After many years of consumers having to hunt around for their organic produce from several suppliers, perhaps directly from... |

In this chapter, the 2016 data on the organic sector in Europe and the European Union are summarized. The development of the European and the European Union’s organic sector in 2016 was characterized by two trends. On the one hand, the market showed a double-digit growth rate again (11.4 percent in Europe; 12 percent in the European Union). On the other hand, organic farmland growth continued to be slower than that of the market, but it was considerably faster than in the previous years, increasing by 6.7 percent in Europe and 8.2 percent in the European Union. The trend of the market growing at a faster rate than the area (Figure 68) has been occurring for several years, showing that production is still not keeping pace with consumer demand. |

The consumption of organic foods has increased throughout Europe, and in Denmark in particular (Giraud, 2003; Hamm et al., 2002; Wier and Calverley, 2002). The Danish market for organic foods is relatively mature, meaning that it does not suffer seriously from the supply shortages and barriers that dominate most of the markets outside Denmark. A prerequisite for this development is the well known and trusted Danish organic label, guaranteeing that the organic production rules are observed. While organic food was perceived mainly as an environmentally friendly good 10–15 years ago (Beckmann, 2001), today’s growth in consumption of organic foods may be due to the increasing focus on private-good attributes such as health, taste and quality and, in... |

Organic farming is a system approach aiming at a sustainable ecosystem, safe food, good nutrition, animal welfare and social justice. Quantitatively, organic farming is still of minor importance, but it is one of the most rapidly growing agricultural sectors worldwide. The new EU 'organic regulation' consists of a framework regulation, complemented by implementation rules and guidelines. Other important regulations/standards are the National Organic Program of the USA, the guidelines of the Codex Alimentrius and the basic standards of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). Under all these standards, plant protection is strictly regulated. Organic plant protection follows a clear hierarchy: primarily, plant health is... |

Increasing globalization affects agricultural production and trade and has consequences for the sustainability of both conventional and organic agriculture. During the last decades, agricultural production and yields have been increasing along with global fertilizer and pesticide consumption. This development has been especially pronounced in the industrialized countries and some developing countries such as China, where cereal yields have increased a remarkable twofold and 4.5-fold respectively since 1961. In those countries, food security has increased, a greater variety of food has been offered and diets have changed towards a greater share of meat and dairy products. However, this development has led to a growing disparity among agricultural... |
