ABSTRACT Among the parameters considered by the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), the soil cover and management factor (C) is the main human influenced factor affecting the estimation of water erosion, and one of the most sensitive to spatiotemporal variations. Consequently, this study aims to compare the efficiency of C factor estimates obtained from the literature for each land-use class (Clit) and by calculation based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (CNDVI). We test the hypothesis that soil loss estimates based on CNDVI approach are more accurate than those based on Clit. Water erosion was estimated based on soil morphological, physical, and chemical properties in addition to climate, relief, management practices, and land use... |

ABSTRACT The production of Coffea arabica L. clone seedlings through the somatic embryogenesis technique is one of the alternatives of greatest demand for coffee producers. However, clones can face difficulties related to acclimatization carried out under greenhouse conditions, which can increase the production costs. A tested alternative with promising results is inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) during the seedling acclimatization process. Thus, this study aimed to promote the improvement of the seedling production process through somatic embryogenesis associated with inoculation with AMF. For the production of the clones, seedlings were used in the phase when they presented four pairs of leaves (Clone 1 “Fruiting red Catucaí” and Clone... |

ABSTRACT Brazilian cheese bread (CB) rolls are gluten-free bread made from sour cassava starch. They are soft in the center and have crispy crust, reminding of the extruded structure. Although native waxy maize starch (WMS) has higher technologic quality, it has not been used in CB rolls; therefore, this study aimed to investigate the use of WMS and the backslopping fermentation process plus sun drying in WMS to replace sour cassava starch (0, 25%, 75%, and 100%) and the effects on dough development, color, and textural properties. Data were analyzed using variance and Tukey test (p ≤ 0.05%), and the results were set against a commercial product from cassava starch. The better formulation was characterized by proximal composition, sensorial acceptance, and... |

ABSTRACT The combination of multispectral aerial images and computational processing is emerging as one of the solutions used in precision agriculture to observe the nutritional status of plants. The objective of this study is therefore to associate the nitrogen content and dry weight of the aerial part of maize plants (DW) with the vegetation indices obtained by multispectral aerial images (NDVIA and NDREA), and with the SPAD index and the Greenseeker NDVI, in the vegetative stage V6. To this end, randomized blocks in a factorial scheme of 6x4 (six nitrogen doses at the base and four different flight altitudes) were used, with three replications. The collected data was submitted to ANOVA with the F test (p = 0,05) and subsequent regression analysis. The... |

ABSTRACT The choice of germplasm is one of the most important phases of a genetic improvement program to the fact that it is the initial development stage of superior hybrids. Hence, the objectives of this study were to obtain the estimates of m+a and d, and inbreeding depression for grain yield and plant height traits, for cultivars lacking this information, and thus to predict the potential of maize hybrids for the extraction of lines. The F1 and F2 generations of 12 maize hybrids were tested at two sites, during the crop years of 2017-18 and 2018-19, accounting for four environments. Both the generations were evaluated in contiguous experiments in randomized blocks design with three and two repetitions during the years 2017-18 and 2018-19, respectively.... |

ABSTRACT Drought is the most harmful environmental factor crop productivity. Some chemicals are used in agriculture to mitigate the damage from this stress on plants. Therefore, we examined whether the spraying of zinc sulfate (ZS), potassium phosphite (KPhi) and the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) would mitigate the deleterious effects of water deficit on sunflower plants by analyzing physiological and biometric characteristics. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse using a randomized block design with five replications. The treatments were arranged in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme: [Factor A (Alleviators)] - spraying of KPhi (0.5 L ha-1), ZS (3.2 kg ha-1), NaHS (1.2 g ha-1), and water; [Factor B (substrate humidity, SH)] -... |

ABSTRACT Buckwheat has become important in the food sector as its flour does not contain gluten. Since buckwheat is a relatively new crop in the agricultural environment, there is little information available regarding its processing. Drying is one of the most important post-harvest stages of buckwheat. The aim of the present study was to describe the drying process of buckwheat grains. Buckwheat grains with a moisture content of 0.41 ± 0.01 (dry basis, d.b.) were harvested, followed by drying in an experimental dryer at the temperatures of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 °C, at an air speed of 0.8 m s-1. The drying rate was determined, and the mathematical models generally employed to describe the drying process of several agricultural products were fitted to the... |

ABSTRACT It is necessary to determine the sorption isotherms of seeds to develop adequate systems of storage and drying. The chemical composition of a product affects the sorption process; products with a high oil content adsorb a lower amount of moisture from the environment than products with a high carbohydrate content. Given the importance of the hygroscopicity of different agricultural products, this work aimed to determine, model and evaluate the difference between desorption isotherms of ryegrass and flax seeds grown at different temperature and relative humidity conditions. Ryegrass and flax seeds, which contained initial moisture contents of 10.4 and 8.7% (db), respectively, were used. The equilibrium moisture content of the seeds was determined... |

ABSTRACT Salinity is one of the main limiting factors for crop growth. The metabolic responses to salt stress are variable and depend on species characteristics. This study aimed to select sunflower genotypes tolerant to salt stress and evaluate some mechanisms of salt tolerance in two contrasting (salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive) genotypes. In the first assay, the biomass production and the accumulation of Na+ and K+ in 26 sunflower genotypes were evaluated. Genotypes AG963, AG967, AG972, BRS321, BRS324, H251, H360 and H863 showed lower biomass production and were characterized as salt-sensitive and the genotypes BRS323, Catisol, EXP11-26, EXP44-49, EXP60050, EXP887, HLA860HO and Olisun 5 showed higher biomass production and were considered... |

ABSTRACT The production of tomato seedlings is conducted on commercial substrates with adequate properties for the good formation of the aerial part and root. The Spent Mushroom Substrate, or SMS, presents advantages over commercial substrates regarding the quality of the vegetable seedlings, which may be provided by the presence of a rich microbiota, bringing higher balance and competition with pathogenic microorganisms, in addition to the biological control of pathogens and nematodes. It is important to know the microbiota present in this material and its relation to the plant, in order for this association to occur in the best manner possible. This work had the objective of identifying the microbiota present in the rhizosphere of tomato seedlings... |

ABSTRACT Setaria viridis (L.) P. Beauv. is a species proposed to be used as model plant in reverse genetics studies for the validation of gene function. Soil salinity is a recurring problem present in more than a 100 countries worldwide, and approximately 20% of the agricultural land in the world has saline and/or sodium soils. Saline stress affects all the main processes of the plant, such as germination, growth, and, consequently, the yield. The present study aimed at determining the tolerance levels of S. viridisA10.1 to saline stress and identify its potential as a model plant to validate salt-tolerance candidate genes/alleles as well as promoter sequences from salt-responsive genes. In an initial experiment, the seeds of the plant were sown on a... |

ABSTRACT Atrazine still is a widely used herbicide in tropical soils to control annual broad-leaved weeds and annual grasses mainly in maize and sorghum plantations. Sorption and desorption in such soils are important processes that affect transport, ending with soil and water contamination, not only in these soils, but in other soils around the world. Lime and phosphate are important amendments in tropical soils to mitigate low fertility. These treatments can affect interaction among soil particles and between soil and atrazine. The objectives here were to evaluate the effect of lime, phosphate, and lime + phosphate treatments on sorption and transport of atrazine in a Typic Hapludult, using soil-erosion-plots at field conditions in a 3%-slope landscape... |
