| Housing criteria should be based around the fundamental concept that “the housing should be adapted to meet the needs of the animal and NOT the adaptation of the animal to meet the needs of the building”. In practice this means housing conditions that meet the needs of the animals in terms of their social behaviour, eg subdominant animals must have the opportunity to withdraw or avoid higher status animals. This may mean greater space at feeding and watering sites greater space per cow alley widths sufficiently wide to allow free passage and the avoidance of dead ends. | The present study examines milk yield traits and functional traits of Simmental dairy cows in organized biological dairy herds in Bavaria. Data from 3588 daughters of 239 bulls born from 1993-1994 were classified by relative breeding values for milk yield (MW) of sire (groups with low, average and high genetic potential for milk yield). Milk, fat and protein yield in first and second lactation increased by 9-13% from low to high genetic merit group. No significant negative effects on fertility, calving ease and somatic cell count with increasing milk yield were observed. Genetic correlations between milk yield traits on organic and conventional farms were about or above rg = 0,90, not indicating any serious genotype by environment interac-tion.... |

| Das Handbuch für Tierhalterinnen und Tierhalter zur Vorbeugung und natürlichen Behandlung von Tierkrankheiten. Neben einer kurzen Einführung in die Grundlagen der Tiergesundheit, der Homöopathie und der Phytotherapie für Tiere informiert das Handbuch über vorbeugende Massnahmen zur Erhaltung der Tiergesundheit. Ergänzend werden konkrete Behandlungsempfehlungen geordnet nach Tierarten und Behandlungskomplexen abgegeben. Die aktuelle Auflage 2005 beinhaltet neben Ausführungen zu nicht tierartspezifischen Erkrankungen auch solche zu Erkrankungen der Rinder, der Kleinwiederkäuer und der Schweine. | In der Studie wurde untersucht, wie sich eine Handling Methode (basierend auf TTouch®) auf extensiv gehaltene Limousin Kreuzungstiere (15 Monate alt) auswirkt. Vor Beginn des Handlings wurde der erste Ausweichdistanztest (AWD-Test) durchgeführt. Anhand dieser Ergebnisse wurden zwei Gruppen mit jeweils ähnlichen Ausweichdistanzen gebildet: eine Handlinggruppe (HG = 1♀, 4♂) und eine Kontrollgruppe (KG =2♀, 3♂). | In many organic farms there is a huge potential to increase efficiency in rearing heifers for replacement. This is the result of a study in 36 organic dairy farms with pasture from South Germany, which were analyzed economically in the years 2009 – 2011. In particular farms with high production efficiency and low production costs per heifer show decreased production times per cow for some months, but this effect is overcompensated by higher milk yields per cow. | The objective was to examine the effect of mountain grazing on the growth and meat quality of suckler calves. Suckler calves with their dams were raised on either cultivated pasture (C) or free range on mountain/forest pasture (M) on four and five commercial farms in 2006 and 2007, respectively. The M included different vegetation types from open, grass-dominated meadows to forests with patches of grasses, herbs and shrubs among the trees. All calves were slaughtered at the end of the grazing season at an average age of 203 (2006) and 193 days (2007). | Le Massif Central détient 25% des vaches allaitantes françaises certifiées AB. Afin d’obtenir des références technico-économiques, 22 élevages bovins allaitants AB ont été suivis en 2004, dont 13 en échantillon constant depuis 2001. Ces exploitations herbagères sont toutes situées en zone défavorisée et leurs performances ont été comparées à un groupe de 105 exploitations conventionnelles de la même zone géographique. Le chargement et la production de viande vive/UGB y sont 20% plus faibles que chez les conventionnels. La plus-value sur le prix de la viande n’est que de 7% car, suite aux difficultés de mise en marché, les animaux engraissés ne représentent que 45% des ventes alors que seuls les animaux gras sont valorisés sur le marché bio. | Züchten ist mehr als nur eine gute Stierenwahl treffen. Ebenso wichtig ist es, die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Betriebes realistisch einzuschätzen. Besonders in der Rindviehzucht können auf dem einzelnen Biobetrieb ansehnliche Erfolge verbucht werden, auch wenn es im Moment noch kein speziell auf den Biolandbau zugeschnittenes Zuchtprogramm gibt. Beat Bapst von der FiBL-Fachgruppe Tierhaltung und Tierzucht setzt sich intensiv mit der Entwicklung einer Rindviehzucht für den biologischen Landbau auseinander. Leistungen spielen dabei zwar auch eine Rolle, aber nielosgelöst, sondern eingebettet ist die Verhältnisse des Betriebs. |
