AVICULTURA INTEGRADA E ESTRATÉGIAS DE MERCADO DE GRANDES EMPRESAS EM PERNAMBUCO AgEcon
Vital, Tales Wanderley; Drouvot, Hubert; Sampaio, Yony.

The Economic Organization of U.S. Broiler Production AgEcon
MacDonald, James M..
Broiler production in the United States is coordinated almost entirely through systems of production contracts, in which a grower’s compensation is based, in part, on how the grower’s performance compares with that of other growers. The industry is undergoing a gradual structural change as production shifts to larger broiler enterprises that provide larger shares of an operator’s household income. Larger enterprises require substantially larger investments in broiler housing, and new or retrofitted houses are also an important source of productivity growth in the industry. This report, based on a large and representative survey of broiler operations, describes the industry’s organization, housing features, contract design, fees and enterprise cost...

The Costs of Biosecurity at the Farm Level: the Case of Finnish Broiler AgEcon
Siekkinen, K.-M.; Heikkila, Jaakko; Tammiranta, N.; Rosengren, H..
In the European Union, the animal health and food safety strategy includes managing biosecurity along the entire production chain. Farm-level biosecurity provides the foundation for this. However, the farm-level costs of preventive biosecurity have rarely been assessed. Yet many risk management practices are in place constantly regardless of whether there is a disease outbreak or not. We contribute towards filling this information gap by studying the costs incurred in preventive biosecurity by the Finnish poultry farms. In a preliminary analysis, we find that the cost of biosecurity is some 3.55 cents per bird for broiler producers and 75.7 cents per bird for hatching egg producers. The results indicate that work-time devoted to biosecurity represents some...

Curtailing Fertilizer Scarcity and Climate Change; an appraisal of Factors Affecting Organic Materials Use Option in Nigeria’s Agriculture AgEcon
Omotesho, O.A.; Fakayode, S.B.; Tariya, Y..
Global trends nowadays towards long term sustainable crop production is hinged on either supplementing the use of chemical fertilizers with organic materials or a complete use of organic materials. This is more so since substituting chemical fertilizers with organic materials reduces the risks of exposure to ailments that arise on account of synthetic compounds and increases farmers’ gains via reduced soil erosion and carbon emissions and increased bio-diversity. In this vein, the current study investigated organic materials use in Nigeria’s agriculture. Specifically, the study examined availability and use of chemical fertilizer and organic materials substitutes and investigated factors affecting the use of organic materials in the Nigerian food sector....

LIVESTOCK SECTORS IN THE ECONOMIES OF EASTERN EUROPE AND THE FORMER SOVIET UNION; TRANSITION FROM PLAN TO MARKET AND THE ROAD AHEAD AgEcon
Bjornlund, Britta; Cochrane, Nancy J.; Haley, Mildred M.; Hoskin, Roger; Liefert, Olga; Paarlberg, Philip L..
This report examines the restructuring of the livestock sectors in five countries: Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, and Romania. All five countries experienced a decline in both animal inventories and meat output during the early years of transition away from a centrally planned economy. ERS, in cooperation with Purdue University, developed five general equilibrium models depicting the economies of each nation. The models were used to evaluate capital investment at different stages of production; the rise in land prices that would result from a better functioning land market; reduced marketing costs; increased availability of credit; and, the creation of off-farm employment to draw labor out of agriculture. The study identifies potential trade and...

NON-TARIFF BARRIERS AND POLITICAL SOLUTIONS TO TRADE DISPUTES: A CASE STUDY OF U.S. POULTRY EXPORTS TO RUSSIA AgEcon
Ames, Glenn C.W..
This paper examines the recent U.S.-Russian trade dispute over poultry meats exports. Russia embargoed U.S. poultry on February 16, 1996, alleging that the U.S. inspection system did not meet Russian standards. An agreement signed on March 25, 1996, establishing an inspection criteria for exports to Russia and a testing protocol for salmonella and residues, resolved the trade dispute. Analysis indicates that Arkansas leg quarters prices are closely linked to U.S. poultry exports to Russia.

Chicken Supreme: How the Indonesian Poultry Sector Can Survive Avian Influenza AgEcon
Vanzetti, David.
Avian influenza is a deadly disease that can spread rapidly through poultry. There are many documented cases of transmission from birds to people, but as yet only rare instances of human to human transmission. Nonetheless, public health officials are concerned about the possibility of a human pandemic, and many countries have policies of banning imports of live birds and poultry meat from infected regions. The potential impacts on Indonesia of a production shock, a shift in consumption or a trade ban are assessed using a heterogeneous product model where imports are differentiated by source. Empirical results suggest the likely trade impacts in Indonesia are minimal because its trade is a small share of production.

TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE IN MEAT AND POULTRY-PACKING AND PROCESSING AgEcon
Lambert, David K..
Nonparametric procedures are used to compare technological change in SIC 2011, meatpacking, and SIC 2015, poultry slaughter and processing. There has been a greater increase in total factor productivity in poultry than in the red meats. Evidence also suggests recent differences in the bias of this technological change, with production changes being labor using in poultry and biased towards greater efficiency in the use of live animal inputs in meatpacking.

Welfare Implications of Selected Supply and Demand Shocks on Producers and Marketers of U.S. Meats AgEcon
Henneberry, Shida Rastegari; Mutondo, Joao E.; Brorsen, B. Wade.
An equilibrium displacement model is developed and used to estimate the welfare impacts of government and industry-funded promotion programs, country of origin labeling (COOL), and the disease-driven, international bans on U.S. beef. The model goes beyond past studies by including the U.S. domestic market and both U.S. meat imports and exports, with meats differentiated by source of origin. The results indicate that while the benefits from beef and pork promotions are higher, the negative impacts of COOL are lower in a model with international trade than in a model without trade. International bans on U.S. beef decrease the welfare of producers and marketers of U.S. beef.

Experimental infection by Salmonella enterica subsp enterica serovar kottbus in day-old broiler chickens Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Ribeiro,SAM; Berchieri Jr,A; Orsi,MA; Mendonça,AO; Ferrati,AR.
The strain used in this work was a Salmonella enterica subsp enterica serovar Kottbus (6,8:e,h:1,5) isolated from imported day-old ducklings in Laboratório Nacional Agropecuário (LANAGRO/SP) of the Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil (MAPA). In view of the lack of information available about this Salmonella isolate and also because it was detected in day-old imported birds, this study was carried out to investigate the dissemination of S. Kottbus among newly hatched chicks. The birds were placed in three groups: one group of 20 birds received 0.1 mL of S. Kottbus culture containing 1.2 x 10(8) CFU/mL, the second group of 20 birds was inoculated with 1.2 x 10(5) CFU/mL and the third group of 10 birds was untreated (control group). Results were similar for...

The Role of ß-Mannanase (Hemicell) in Improving Poultry Productivity, Health and Environment Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Saeed,M; Ayaşan,T; Alagawany,M; El-Hack,MEA; Abdel-Latif,MA; Patra,AK.
ABSTRACT The poultry nutritionists constantly attempt to identify and alleviate the factors responsible for adverse effects on nutrient utilization and production performance in avian species, which are necessary for successful productivity of poultry. Enhanced feed utilization can reduce levels of some nutrients in the diet with concomitant mitigation in nutrient excretion into the environment, reduction of eutrophication and acidification potentials of excreta. Commercial enzymes have been used to improve feed efficiency and utilization in poultry. Among many anti-nutritional factors, the existence of ß-mannans in poultry feed ingredients including soybean and other leguminous seeds has been associated with negative effects on nutrient digestibility and...
