Effect of false flax oilcake in thermophilic biogas production Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans-Marten; Xiaming, Wei; Sun, Yongming; Rahmann, Gerold; Böhm, Herwart.
False flax oilcake has been found to be suitable for anaerobic fermentation in mixtures with cattle slurry and straw. In organic farms, digestion of cattle dung and wheat straw with 8 % dry matter content mixed with 5 % of total material weight false flax oilcake is a feasible option for utilizing false flax oilcake to produce farm-own renewable energy and offering farm-own high nitrogen (ammonia) content fertilizer (2.48 g kg-1 wet wt). In field digesters, the biogas yield of 8 % dry matter pure material under thermophilic condition was 0.24 l g-1 VS fed. The biogas yield could be increased by mixing 5 % false flax oilcake to get 0.37 l g-1 VS fed and a VS conversion efficiency with 0.83 l g-1 VS destroyed. Under laboratory controlled conditions, the...

Ukraine: Country Report Organic Eprints
Prokopchuk, Natalie; Eisenring, Tobias.
The rapid and sustained growth of the international organic trade represents a good opportunity for Ukraine to improve the economic situation of the population in the rural areas and develop the organic sector in Ukraine. During the last years the potential for organic products from Ukraine has not only awakened international buyers, but also stimulated domestic market growth. Ukraine with its 46 million citizens has considerable potential for organic production, processing, trade, and consumption. Currently the assortment of organic products is still very poor. Traders are therefore prompted to import organic products. Ukraine produces mainly organic raw materials for export and the domestic market.

Soil quality of organically managed citrus orchards in the Mediterranean area. Organic Eprints
Canali, Stefano.
Soil quality can be defined as the capacity of a soil to function, whilst maintaining the environmental quality and promoting plant and animal health. It also refers to the capability of soil to function at present and in the future for an indefinite period of time. Soil quality is a basic concept in the sustainable management of any agricultural system aimed at producing, avoiding or reducing negative effects on the environment, preserving resources and saving energy on a medium- or long-term basis and its assessment might be considered a means for the evaluation of the environmental sustainability of agricultural systems. A study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the contribution of the introduction of organic farming system to the environmental...

Measuring and improving the environmental performance of organic farming Organic Eprints
Müller, Adrian; Meier, Matthias; Schader, Christian; Gattinger, Andreas; Steffens, Markus.
There is a large and growing body of literature comparing the environmental performance of organic and conventional farming in specific settings, either on farm or product level. However, how one assesses ‘environmental performance’ is a complex and multifaceted question, and one-dimensional indicators tend to neglect key aspects of production systems. This chapter evaluates a number of multidimensional methods of assessment, including Life Cycle Assessment, Productivity Analysis, multi-criteria assessment approaches and food systems modelling. It is concluded that the assessment of environmental performance must go beyond the level of production, and address consistency and sufficiency aspects that emerge at the consumption stage. The organic sector has a...

Ein Mistelextrakt (Viscum album) als ergänzendes Therapiekonzept beim felinen Fibrosarkom Organic Eprints
Biegel, Ulrike; Klocke, Peter; Ruess-Melzer, Katja; Kaser-Hotz, Barbara.

Organic Agriculture - Driving Innovations in Crop Research Organic Eprints
Forster, Dionys; Adamtey, Noah; Messmer, Monika M.; Pfiffner, Lukas; Baker, Brian; Huber, Beate; Niggli, Urs.
At present, agriculture faces the unprecedented challenge of securing food supplies for a rapidly growing human population, while seeking to minimize adverse impacts on the environment and to reduce the use of non-renewable resources and energy. A shift towards sustainable agricultural production entails the adoption of more system-oriented strategies that include farmderived inputs and productivity based on ecological processes and functions (Garnett and Godfray, 2012). Sustainable agricultural systems involve the traditional knowledge and entrepreneurial skills of farmers (IAASTD, 2008). System-oriented sustainable practices include organic farming and low external input sustainable agriculture (LEISA). Elements of agroecology - such as integrated pest...

Proposals for Regulation of Botanicals Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Speiser, Bernhard; Mercier, Thierry.
Plants and plant extracts, here called 'botanicals', have been used for plant protection for a long time. Quantitatively, the most important botanical is pyrethrum, followed by azadirachtin, rotenone and essential oils. The current regulatory systm for pesticides is often seen as a major hurdle for the market introduction of new botanicals. The EU-funded Specific Support Action project 'REBECA' has held a series of workshops with stakeholder representatives. The following propopsals for improvement were elaborated: (1) development of a specific guidance document for botanicals; (2) adapted requirements concerning the characterisation of the active substance(s); (3) relaxations concerning identification and analytical methods for 'impurities'; (4) adapted...

Checklist’s compliance with other standards for organic/sustainable agriculture Organic Eprints
van Mansvelt, J.D.; Znaor, Darko.
This work is an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, widely-calibrated checklist for EU sustainable landscape management, which is intended to serve both as an analytical tool of reference as well as a design tool for local, regional and European policy making on sustainable developments. The tool has been developed out of a multidisciplinary study in EU countries which was designed to find out what would be the overall requirements for a sustainable management of the landscape of rural areas. Could these stipulations be brought together in a comprehensive system with sufficient consistency to comply with the notion that the landscape is an entity, which should be managed accordingly? Cooperation of the scientific experts with those involved in the...

Agronomic strategies for the organic cultivation of potatoes for processing into high quality French fries and potato chips Organic Eprints
Böhm, Herwart; Krause, Tanja; Haase, Thorsten; Haase, Norbert U.; Loges, Ralf; Heß, Jürgen.
In order to achieve the successful cultivation of potato raw material to be processed into French fries and crisps, the high quality standards set by the processing industry have to be fulfilled and high tuber yields attained. In a cooperative research project, different strategies for the cultivation of high quality potato raw material for processing were examined under the conditions of organic farming. The choice of variety was found to be the most important agronomic instrument for the organic farmer to secure high tuber yields and quality. Varieties Agria and Marena can be recommended as they gave high tuber yields of the required size grade and also high French fry quality both at harvest and after storage. With regard to processing into crisps,...

Strategien im Umgang mit Kontaminationen im Unternehmen Organic Eprints
Wyss, Gabriela.
How can Organic Agriculture contribute to Sustainable Development? Organic Eprints
Kilcher, Lukas.
Organic agriculture can, especially in poorer countries, contribute to meaningful socioeconomical and ecologically sustainable development. On the one hand, this is due to the organic practice, which means management of local resources (e.g. local seed varieties, dung, etc.) and therefore cost effectiveness. On the other hand, the market for organic products — at local and international level — has tremendous prospects for growth and offers to creative producers and exporters from the south some excellent opportunities to improve their incomes and living conditions. As to whether organic agriculture is a viable alternative for a particular holding, is something, which can only be clarified case by case. What are the potentials of organic agriculture for...
