The Role of Credit Access in Improving Cocoa Production in West African Countries AgEcon
Nyemeck, J.B.; Gockowski, James; Nkamleu, Guy Blaise.
This study uses survey data to examine the role of access to credit on cocoa production, in West African cocoa production countries under conditions of agricultural policy liberalization. The study specifies and estimates econometric models to simulate the counterfactual of what cocoa production would be in the absence of credit facilities. The survey results show that about 54% of cocoa farmers have access to credit in Nigeria, and respectively 37% in Cameroon, while in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire only a few cocoa farmers have access to credit. We find that the cocoa farmer’s capacity such as, the cocoa farm size, and the mutuality status of the farmer are more important as a determinants of cocoa farmers access to credit as well as another set of variables...

Supporting Household Consumption in the Time of Economic Crisis: Evidence from Food Security Program in Indonesia AgEcon
Pangaribowo, Evita Hanie.
This study evaluates the impact of food security program – an almost universal program of Indonesian Social Safety Net Program in the time of economic crisis. Food security program aimed to protect poor households from the negative effects of economic crisis by means of highly subsidized rice. To assess the impact of the program, this study utilizes matching estimator approach combined with difference in difference method. The rich longitudinal dataset used in this study enables matching estimator and difference in difference approach to provide accurate estimate of the program’s impact on its beneficiaries. Results indicate the positive impact of the food security program on the expenditures of richer nutrient food which include meat, fish and dairy...

Smallholder Commercialization Trends as Affected by Land Constraints in Zambia: What Are the Policy Implications? AgEcon
Hichaambwa, Munguzwe; Jayne, Thomas S..
In spite of vast expanses of the country’s land currently being uncultivated, there is increasing evidence that a surprisingly high share of rural smallholder households face land constraints that adversely affect their productivity and ability to participate in agricultural supply chains.

Agricultural Clusters in China AgEcon
Kiminami, Lily; Kiminami, Akira.
The purpose of this study is to assess the potential of clustering in the development of agriculture and rural communities in China. We shall examine in detail the food industry, which is the link in the food chain that propels the industrialization of agriculture, and identify instances of industrial agglomeration and business collaboration. Next, we shall analyze the externalities (i.e. spillovers) of clusters, demand conditions in cluster formation, and the effectiveness of business collaborations.

A study of tourist’ attitudes and preferences for local products in Crete and changes induced by the current economic crisis AgEcon
Proust, Remi; Angelakis, George; Drakos, Periklis.
The Cretan tourism sector has been characterised by a large and rapid growth from 1970 to 2000 and has gone on the primary industry of the island. Despite the fact that this growth has seemed stagnant over the last few years, tourism is still of vital importance for the local economy. Agricultural industries are strongly linked with tourism activities and usually derive numerous benefits from them. Understanding tourists’ opinions and demands plays a crucial role in implementing appropriate and sustainable future agricultural offer strategies on the island in the future. As several studies have previously indicated, the current global economic and financial crisis has deeply cut household expenditure and 2009 has been predicted to be a difficult year for...

Policy Requirements in the EU and the Existing Array of Indicators Problem Definition, Policy Performance and the Implications of Reform AgEcon
Hill, Berkeley.
Policies involving agriculture require information about production of commodities and about the firms that produce them. Understanding the behaviour of the family-firm is central to many issues and increasingly relevant as objectives evolve and the pluriactive nature of farm households is recognised. Policy reform is likely to concentrate interest on the welfare of the agricultural household and the various sources of income that accrue to it. However, statistics that have the household-firm at their centre are poorly developed compared with those on agricultural activity. Reasons are explored and opportunities identified to correct this imbalance.

Characterizing the female entrepreneur: Comparing behavior in a market entry experiment with other groups of individuals AgEcon
Schade, Christian; Boewe, Sabrina; Krause, Kai Oliver.
We investigate the strategic decision behavior of female entrepreneurs in a realistic market entry experiment where individuals started with gains or losses experienced prior to the game. We compare the entry behavior of female entrepreneurs to the entry behavior of male entrepreneurs and to the entry behavior of female and male students. We find that female entrepreneurs show entry patterns very similar to that of male entrepreneurs and very different from female students: female entrepreneurs on average over enter markets and do not react to their opponents’ prior experiences much. The same accounts for male entrepreneurs. Furthermore, we find that entrepreneurs in general exhibit significantly higher mean entry probabilities than students, whereby...

Contractual Relationships in the Hungarian Milk Sector AgEcon
Bakucs, Lajos Zoltan; Ferto, Imre; Szabo, Gabor G..
In this paper we present an empirical analysis of farmers’ contracting choice in the Hungarian milk sector using 2005 milk producer survey data, employing transaction cost economics. We focus on analysing some key determinants of farmers’ contracting choices: type of contracts, duration, number of contractors, incentives provided in the contract and business history of farmers and buyers. Some of the main results include the importance and effect of farm size, quantity of milk delivered, planned short and long run or contract related investment on farm, the possibility of farmer to influence prices on the contracting choices.

Unexploited Agricultural Growth: The Case of Crop–Livestock Production Systems in Zimbabwe AgEcon
Homann, Sabine; Rooyen, Andre van.
Livestock is the most important source of cash for small-scale farmers in the semi-arid tropics of southern Africa. However, with limited access to markets, farmers do not have the incentive to invest in improved livestock management. Livestock production and off-takes remain low and farmers are unable to realize the full potential of their herds. We believe that improved market access will be the driver to increase technology adoption for income growth and poverty reduction. In Zimbabwe, a recent baseline diagnosis by ICRISAT and partners found that cash income from goats is crucial to cover day-to-day expenditures for food, education and human health. Cattle are more important for draft power and milk, and support subsistence cropping activities. Major...

TARGETING “REAL FARMERS” WITH REFORMED CAP PAYMENTS: AN ANALYSIS FOR ITALY AgEcon
Rocchi, Benedetto.
A multi-sector model is used to assess the targeting of CAP payments in Italy, according with alternative definitions of the “real farmers” institutional sector. The model is based on a Social Accounting Matrix of the Italian economy, properly adapted to represent the process of income formation and distribution in agriculture. The accounting framework has been integrated with a set of microeconomic information from the Farm Business Survey, a sample of agricultural holdings representative of the whole industry in Italy. The effects of changes in CAP payments have been assessed through a process in which impacts moves from the micro to the macro module of the model and return, in an iterative way. A vector of final income increase for each household...

EXPLORING MEAT AND POULTRY RECALL DATA FOR POLICY LESSONS AgEcon
Teratanavat, Ratapol P.; Hooker, Neal H.; Salin, Victoria.
Four measures are introduced to evaluate the likelihood of meat and poultry recalls and how firms and FSIS manage such events. These measures include the proportion of product retrieved (recovery rate), time to complete a case, the ratio of recovery rate and completion, and the hazard rate. This research aims to advance our knowledge and understanding of food safety programs by presenting statistical indicators which benchmark the food system. The results from OLS, Negative Binomial, and Cox regression models suggest that limited conclusions can be reached in terms of overall performance and factors that explain the timeliness of recalls. Evidence suggests that smaller plants perform as well as large plants in their recall actions. Also, when the firm...

Between markets and policy: farm household's reaction to decoupling AgEcon
Gomez y Paloma, Sergio; Raggi, Meri; Viaggi, Davide.
The main objective of this paper is to evaluate ex post the effects of 2003 decoupling, with a specific focus on farm investment behaviour. In the past years a number of studies have addressed the issue of the impact of EU policy reforms. However, long term effects of policy changes and related impacts on structural and investment behaviour received relatively little attention in modelling exercises concerning CAP reform up to now. This study is based on a survey about 250 farm households in Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain, Greece, The Netherlands, France and Hungary. In the majority of cases, farmers stated they were indifferent to decoupling. Where any change occurred, the impact of decoupling was highly differentiated. Differences in reaction are better...

Dynamic Sanitary and Phytosanitary Trade Policy AgEcon
Olson, Lars J.; Roy, Santanu.
This paper characterizes the optimal use of sanitary and phytosanitary standards to prevent the introduction of harmful pests and diseases through international trade. Because established pest and disease infestations grow and spread over time their introduction has intertemporal consequences. In a dynamic economic model, an efficient trade policy balances the costs of SPS measures against the discounted stream of the costs of control and social damages that are avoided by using SPS measures, where future growth and spread of any established infestation is accounted for. We examine when phytosanitary trade policy makes good economic sense, when it is efficient to provide full protection against pests and diseases, and when restrictive, but not fully...
