THE structure and nature of the uppermost oceanic mantle and crust has been, and still is, the subject of a major international research effort . Yet the direct field evidence known to us on this subject, whether obtained by drilling in the I.P.O.D. oceanic crust programme² or by submersible surveying in the Famous programme , has been either very incomplete or limited to the upper part of layer 2. As a result, the problem of the comparison between ophiolites and oceanic crust is still debated . We report here the preliminary results of an in situ geological survey in which we have sampled and observed what we believe to be an almost complete geological section starting a few kilometres below the Moho discontinuity and ending in the upper part of layer 2... |

The three central chapters of this work constitute an explanatory comment of the jointed Central North Atlantic reconstruction maps. In the first chapter, the model is situated relatively to other works devoted to the evolution of the Atlantic ocean, the data used and the methods followed are exposed. In th fifth chapter, we discuss some of the several implications of the model. The main characteristic of this approach is that it aims to integrate from the beginningthe major plate system constituted by: the North American, Eurasian and African plates. For each geological period, results of the detailed regional studies are referred to the evolution of the whole system and evaluated according to it. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

The Alboran Sea is made up of two distinct basins. The first one has approximately the shape of a lozenge, surrounded by the arc of Gibraltar and the two thresholds (northern and southern) of Alboran. It is about a hundred kilometres at its largest width. Its average depth is only 1 300 m, that is 1 000 m less than in the Algero-balearic and Provencal basins. The second one is elongated, deeper (1 800 to 2 000 m) and is widely open to the east and northeast on the algero-balearic basin. The route to this latter basin is made through a more marked slope of a gradient of around 500 m and oriented NNE-SSW. |

The aim of the YOKOSUKA 91 cruise (October 1991) of the Japanese submersible Shinkai 6500 was to come back on two hydrothermal sites of the axis of the North Fiji Basin ridge which had already been explored by the submersible Nautile in 1989. This cruise gave us the opportunity to show that the hydrothermal manifestations vary a lot in terms of geology, geochemistry or biology during a very short time. A new site which is located in a deep graben of the N 160 ridge axis showed only activity along a fault system marked by sulphide deposits. |

The alignment of the Balearic Islands, stretching from the Spanish mainland towards the Corsican-Sardinian block, has long intrigued many geologists. Since Suess (1886), we know that the Balearic block (Ibiza, Formentera, and Majorca) is part of the Alpine system. Many authors (Kober, 1914; Staub, 1928; Kober, 1931) have subsequently attempted to comprehensively integrate the history of the Balearic block within the history of the Alpine chain. In this paper, we will use data from marine geology and geophysics to define the location of the Balearic Islands during the diverse phases of distension, shearing, and compression between the European and African plates, which created the present western Mediterranean and the Alpine chain. In particular, we will... |

A morphological analysis of the Baie desAnges (Nice) Seabeam map has been carried out in order to investigate the genesis of the Var and Paillon submarine canyons. From the identification of the morphological units at différent scales one is able to proposea model for the formation of the canyons, The Var and Paillon canyons are interpreted as being cut in a deep-sea fan presently being destroyed by mass wasting processes. .The structural framework exhibits an orthogonal fault system which plays a prominent role in the spatial distribution of the canyons and the sliding areas. The age of these canyons is thought to be Quatenary. |

Seismic, Seabeam, magnetic and gravimetrie surveys in the southern part of the N-Fiji basin were conducted during the SEAPSO LEG III Cruise. The active spreading axis was recognized between 17°30'S and 21°S. It consists of a continuous N-S Ridge cross-cut by transverse directions oriented N25 and N45. North of 17°30'S, the spreading System is more complex due to the existence of a possible triple junction located around 15° S. The eastern part of the N-Fiji basin, west of Viti Levu is mostly characterized by alternating highs and deeps (<4,000 m). This area must be regarded no more as a spreading center, but as complex boundary suffering transverse tectonics. |

We present in this paper raw data and preliminary results of CYAGOR dives (July-August 1977) on Gorringe bank (SW Portugal). A series of eight dives with submersible SP 3000 Cyana, from 2 600 to 40 m depth, enabled us to observe the outcrop of the bank flanks, a nearly complete cross-section of oceanic crust and upper mantle. The structure seems to be little affected by fracturing and is slightly rocked to the NE. Cross-sections made during the dives show characteristics similar to those of an ophiolitic complex. |

The study of seismic profiles (made with Sparker and with air-gun) recorded in the Alboran sea helps us to complete and modify an interpretation which was previously made. Further to complementary data on the structural frame, we showed the existence of a salt layer topped with evaporites, in the basins situated on both sides of the Alboran ridges. With regard to the thick infra-salt layer in the western Alboran basin, it appears that the basement of the basin, as a whole, is at a depth similar to the depth of the North-African basin. This supports the hypothesis of a common origin and evolution for both basins. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |
