How does eutrophication impact bundles of ecosystem services in multiple coastal habitats using state-and-transition models ArchiMer
Kermagoret, Charlene; Claudet, Joachim; Derolez, Valerie; Nugues, Maggy M.; Ouisse, Vincent; Quillien, Nolwenn; Baulaz, Yoann; Le Mao, Patrick; Scemama, Pierre; Vaschalde, Diane; Bailly, Denis; Mongruel, Remi.
One of the current major scientific challenges to sustain social-ecological systems is to improve our understanding of the spatial and temporal dynamics of the relationships between biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services. Here, we analyse the bundles of ecosystem services supplied by three coastal ecosystems (coastal lagoons, coral reefs and sandy beaches) along a gradient of eutrophication. Based on a state-and-transition model, we analyses the dynamic responses of ecological communities to environmental change and management actions. Although few exceptions are highlighted, increasing eutrophication in the three ecosystem types leads to a degradation of the ecosystem service bundles, particularly for nutrient and pathogen...

Directive Cadre Eau. Estimation du degré d’échange avec la mer pour les lagunes du bassin Rhône Méditerranée & Corse ArchiMer
Derolez, Valerie; Leurion, Axel; Fiandrino, Annie.
In the context of the update of the inventory of water bodies of the Rhone-Mediterranean and Corsican (RM & C) basin, an assessment of pressures and impacts on the lagoons is expected during the second water management plan (2010-2015) of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Pressures due to pollutant inputs may have a varying impact on lagoons, according to their degree of interaction with the sea. The more exchanges with the sea will be high, the more export opportunities and dilution of pollutants will be high. The more exchanges will be limited, the more pollutants will accumulate in the lagoons, making then more vulnerable to inputs. The objective of this work is to propose, for the 28 lagoons (21 transition water bodies) of RM & C Basin, an...

Oysters modify the planktonic microbial community structure by their filtration and NH4 excretion activities. While many studies have been conducted on this subject with adult oysters, none had been carried out in situ with juveniles. Pacific oyster juveniles (Magallana gigas, previously Crassostrea gigas) died massively all over the world since 2008 in relation with OsHV-1 infection. During mortality episodes, sick and dead oysters are not separated from healthy live ones, and left to decay in the surrounding environment, with unknown consequences for the nutrient cycle and planktonic microbial components (PMC). The present study aimed to elucidate for the first time the interactions between oyster juveniles and PMC during a mortality episode. Innovative...

Assessment of eutrophication of French Mediterranean lagoons in relation to meteorological interannual variability ArchiMer
Malet, Nathalie; Derolez, Valerie; Laugier, Thierry; Munaron, Dominique; Fiandrino, Annie; Messiaen, Gregory; Fortune, Martine; Souchu, Philippe; Barral, Marc; Daloz, Aurélien; Moragues, Laurent.
Since recent decades, nutrient-related eutrophication, originating from agricultural use of fertilizer and population enhancement, can be considered worldwide as the main disturbance for coastal lagoons. Since coastal lagoons are very shallow and enclosed, their functioning is tightly linked to meteorological conditions. The aim of this study is to compare different rainfall levels and eutrophication response on coastal lagoons of the Languedoc-Roussillon (Western Mediterranean coast), subject to different nutrient loads from their watershed, in order to check the possibility to distinguish the effects of watershed management or rainfall conditions on water quality (waste water treatment plant improvement, decrease of fertilizer spreading).

Base de données "pressions sur les lagunes méditérranéennes" - Analyse des liens état - pression ArchiMer
Meinesz, Coralie; Derolez, Valerie; Bouchoucha, Marc.

Brocard, Gilles; Derolez, Valerie; Serais, Ophelie; Fiandrino, Annie; Lequette, Camille; Lescoulier, Christophe; Benedetti, Murielle; Couton, Prunelle; Marty, Delphine.
The OMEGA Thau project (Environmental Management Tool and Alert Management), managed by SMBT (Syndicate of Thau Basin), includes scientists, local institutions and authorities, fishermen and shellfish farmers. The aim of this project is to develop an Environmental Management Tool, which can guide local authorities in infrastructure improvements and urban and resource planning in order to achieve optimal water quality that is consistent with European standards for recreational waters and shellfish harvesting areas. The measurement campaigns, achieved simultaneously on the watershed and the lagoon during 18 months, enabled i) data acquisition for the calibration of the model of faecal pollution transfer, from the source to the shellfish harvest areas, ii)...

Serais, Ophelie; Derolez, Valerie; Caprais, Marie-paule.
Microbes regularly contaminate Thau lagoon shellfish. Between 1997 and 2007, 18% of the analyses carried out in dry weather recorded more than 230 Escherichia coli / 100 g of bivalves (Ifremer French microbial monitoring network), leading the administration to restrict the shellfish harvest area, including suspension of production. This study aims to determine, the contribution of seabirds, which roost at night on the Thau lagoon shellfish growing frames, to shellfish faecal pollution in dry weather. Data were collected in 2008 from both the drainage area (pollution input) and the lagoon (water quality and microbial monitoring, seabird counts) in dry weather. The data showed that, with no watershed input or lagoon resurgence, microbial contaminants were...

First steps of ecological restoration in Mediterranean lagoons: Shifts in phytoplankton communities ArchiMer
Leruste, A.; Malet, Nathalie; Munaron, Dominique; Derolez, Valerie; Hatey, E.; Collos, Y.; De Wit, R.; Bec, B..
Along the French Mediterranean coast, a complex of eight lagoons underwent intensive eutrophication over four decades, mainly related to nutrient over-enrichment from continuous sewage discharges. The lagoon complex displayed a wide trophic gradient from mesotrophy to hypertrophy and primary production was dominated by phytoplankton communities. In 2005, the implementation of an 11 km offshore outfall system diverted the treated sewage effluents leading to a drastic reduction of anthropogenic inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus into the lagoons. Time series data have been examined from 2000 to 2013 for physical, chemical and biological (phytoplankton) variables of the water column during the summer period. Since 2006, total nitrogen and phosphorus...
