Developing a multispecific stocks MSE framework : English Channel and North Sea Rajidae complex ArchiMer
Amelot, Morgane; Batsleer, Jurgen; Foucher, Eric; Girardin, Raphael; Marchal, Paul; Poos, Jan Jaap; Sys, Klaas.
Six Rajidae stocks (Raja clavata, Raja brachyura, Raja montagui, Raja microocellata, Leucoraja naevus and Raja undulata) are currently exploited in the English Channel and North Sea area (ICES divisions 3a, 4 and 7d) and subject to a TAC regulation. This TAC is set based on monospecific approaches (abundance indices) when mangement is complex based. However, stock status disparities exist between these species. In this context a multispecific MSE (Management Strategy evaluation) framework has been developped based on DLMTool package from R. The main objective was to estimate the complex management impact at the different steps of stocks management (data collect, assessment, management measures implementation). The species species assessement and ...

Modelling larval dispersal of Pecten maximus in the English Channel: a tool for the spatial management of the stocks ArchiMer
Nicolle, Amandine; Moitie, Roderic; Ogor, Julien; Dumas, Franck; Foveau, Aurelie; Foucher, Eric; Thiebaut, Eric.
The great scallop Pecten maximus supports one of the most important and valuable commercial fisheries around the British Isles and in the northwest of France, but the resource is mainly managed at the scale of each local fishing ground through a combination of European, national and local measures. To analyse the larval dispersal pathways and connectivity patterns among fishing grounds of the great scallop in the Celtic Sea and the English Channel, a particle tracking model was developed. The model combined a 3D physical circulation model that simulated currents and temperature fields and a scallop larval submodel that took into account a temperature-dependent planktonic larval duration and an active vertical swimming behaviour. Due to the lack of stock...

Evaluation annuelle du stock de coquilles Saint-Jacques de la baie de Seine : résultats de la campagne COMOR 45. (7 au 24 juillet 2015) ArchiMer
Foucher, Eric.
Each year, Ifremer evaluates the Bay of Seine stock of King scallop Pecten maximus, using data collected during a summer scientific survey. The survey COMOR45 took place in July 2015, during which 171 dredge hauls were made in the classified ground of Bay of Seine (located in French territorial waters) and the "Near Outside", area located further north, between the 12-mile limit and the parallel 49°48N. The results of the assessment show, for all the areas surveyed, an excellent recruitment made of 2 years old individuals (cohort 2013), a low amount of adults (3 years old and more King scallop), and a massive amount of 1 year old scallops (pre-recruitment). The exploitable biomass is estimated at 14138 and 10779 tons, respectively to the Bay of Seine and...

Recent MSFD assessment for the commercial (D3) and fish & cephalopods species (D1): Conclusions for the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Delaunay, Damien; Brind'Amour, Anik; Foucher, Eric; Baudrier, Jerome.
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive recommends that Member States achieve a good environmental status (GES) of their marine waters by 2020. The definition of the GES is described by 11 descriptors, including descriptors assessing (commercial or not) species biodiversity (D1 and D3). D1 stipulates that biological diversity of the fish and cephalopod components is maintained and D3 stipulates that populations of all commercially exploited fish and shellfish are within safe biological limits, exhibiting a population age and size distribution that is indicative of a healthy stock. The French assessment of the GES was conducted in 2018 in the bay of Biscay. The evaluation consisted in a quantitative and qualitative assessments. For the D3, the quantitative...

Evaluation du stock de coquilles Saint-Jacques de la Baie de Seine et du Proche Extérieur. COMOR 32 (8-23 juillet 2002) ArchiMer
Foucher, Eric.
Scientific scallop surveys called COMOR are carried out in the bay of Seine since 1976. Results are used by fishermen’ associations and by fishing administration to lead management measures. In this report, the scientific results of the survey COMOR 32 realised in July 2002 are described. Abundance and growth indices for scallop, by age and area, are presented. During these surveys, data about most abundant benthic species are also collected since 1998. A first assessment with five years data is made here. A global descriptive analysis is undertaken about all the species present on scallops grounds. A special zoom is applied on both species whitch could be exploited (whelk Buccinum undatum and queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis) and three competitive...

Le projet ANR-COMANCHE 2010-STRA-010. Interactions écosystémiques et impacts anthropiques dans les populations de COquilles Saint-Jacques (Pecten maximus) de la MANCHE. Rapport scientifique final ArchiMer
Foucher, Eric; Blanchard, Michel; Cugier, Philippe; Desroy, Nicolas; Dreanno, Catherine; Fauchot, Juliette; Fifas, Spyros; Guyader, Olivier; Jean, Frederic; Le Gallic, Bertrand; Riou, Philippe; Schapira, Mathilde; Thiebaut, Eric.
The King scallop Pecten maximus constitutes the first landed species in terms of tonnage and the second or third one in terms of value for the French fisheries. More than 90% of these landings come from the English Channel indicating that its exploitation is essential to local fleets. The COMANCHE project (Ecosystem Interactions and anthropogenic impacts on King scallops populations in the English Channel) proposed to improve the knowledge of the scallop within the Channel, through an ecosystem-based approach for fisheries, appealing to a wide range of scientific disciplines (physics, chemistry, genetics, ecology, geostatistics, modeling, economics ....). Researches on the spatial location of scallop beds, connectivity by larval dispersal between beds,...

A coupled biophysical model for the distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel ArchiMer
Le Goff, Clement; Lavaud, Romain; Cugier, Philippe; Jean, Fred; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Foucher, Eric; Desroy, Nicolas; Fifas, Spyros; Foveau, Aurelie.
In this paper we used a modelling approach integrating both physical and biological constraints to understand the biogeographical distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel during its whole life cycle. A 3D bio-hydrodynamical model (ECO-MARS3D) providing environmental conditions was coupled to (i) a population dynamics model and (ii) an individual ecophysiological model (Dynamic Energy Budget model). We performed the coupling sequentially, which underlined the respective role of biological and physical factors in defining P. maximus distribution in the English Channel. Results show that larval dispersion by hydrodynamics explains most of the scallop distribution and enlighten the main known hotspots for the population,...
