Bivalve aquaculture transfers in Atlantic Europe. Part B: Environmental impacts of transfer activities ArchiMer
Brenner, M.; Fraser, Duncan; Van Nieuwenhove, K.; O'Beirn, F.; Buck, B. H.; Mazurie, Joseph; Thorarinsdottir, G.; Dolmer, P.; Sanchez-mata, A.; Strand, O.; Flimlin, G.; Miossec, Laurence; Kamermans, P..
For centuries human populations have moved live shellfish around the world for consumption or aquaculture purposes; being relayed from their area of origin for growout or sale. This is in contrast to the inadvertent anthropogenic spreading of species via e.g. ballast waters. There are inherent risks associated with transfer of shellfish including introducing of alien species, diseases, pests, bacteria and viruses associated with the translocated species in addition to the potential impact on genetic integrity and biodiversity of local stocks. Many examples of severe ecological impacts have been documented worldwide owing to the intentional or unintentional translocation of animals. It is therefore important to develop risk reduction methods which have not...

Alien species alert: Crassostrea gigas (Pacific oyster) ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Le Deuff, Rose-marie; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg, 1793) is one of 20 species in the genus Crassostrea. Although native to the Japan/Korea region, C. gigas is a hardy species that has been introduced to a number of countries worldwide, including the US, Canada, the UK, France, Korea, China, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and South America, mainly for aquaculture purposes (Mann et al., 1991; Orensanz et al., 2002). As a result, C. gigas has become the leading species in world shellfish culture, with an estimated production of 4.6 million t in 2006 (FAO, 2008). Because C. gigas does not require additional food to sustain its growth, this species is relatively inexpensive and easy to produce. Its capacity to adapt to various environmental conditions and...

Soudant, Dominique; Miossec, Laurence; Neaud-masson, Nadine; Auby, Isabelle; Maurer, Daniele; Daniel, Anne.

The Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas : a species introduced in Europe for aquaculture in the 70's to become invasive in the late 90's ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas: from an introduced species for aquaculture to an invasive species for the ecosystem Miossec L. and Goulletquer Ph. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas has been introduced worldwide for aquaculture purposes since the beginning of the last century. In most of the countries the species established broadly, emphasizing its ability to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. In Europe the Pacific oyster was massively introduced in the 1970s especially into France after mass mortalities of the Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata affected by a viral disease. Good environmental conditions in some French areas on the Atlantic coast induced successful recruitments in the following years. The population became...

Created in 1992, the REPAMO network (Network of mollusc pathology), is a national zoosanitary surveillance network of shellfish health status along the French coasts. Its activities are in keeping with two European Directives, 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EC and are a part of the institutional tasks of Ifremer. The aims of the network are to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens and to survey the evolution ofnotifiable pathogens already present in France. The network focused on the survey of listed diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis of flat oyster) in two areas under agreement process (zone X and Granville bed in zone IX). In 2006, only samples of the Granville bed could be analysed due to the difficulty to obtain flat oysters (sparse oyster...

Cultural practices and risk of shellfish pathogen exchanges : the oyster aquaculture in France ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Girard, Sophie; Czerwinski, N..
The first national census concerning shellfish culture in France was carried out in 2002. The main purpose was to provide accurate and comprehensive information on the number and structure of the companies using an in depth review of production factors (leases, plants, equipment's, labour and qualifications), and a survey of cultural practices up to the market level. Moreover, the census aimed to quantify the bivalve sales dedicated to consumption and to measure the livestock transfers among rearing shellfish production areas at different developmental stages: spat, intermediate products and fully grown marketable products. The French oyster production reached 109 000 metric tons in 2001. The main production was observed in Poitou-Charentes region...

Repamo network : a surveillance tool for mollusc health ArchiMer
Garcia, Celine; Arzul, Isabelle; Chollet, Bruno; Francois, Cyrille; Joly, Jean-pierre; Miossec, Laurence; Robert, Maeva.
At the present time losses due to diseases are one of main factors limiting the aquaculture development. Unceasing increase of exchanges between different countries favours the risk of introduction and propagation of new pathogen agents. At the beginning of the 90's the European Union laid the surveillance of mollusc health inside each Member State in order to protect the safety of exchanges. Indeed few measures are available to protect molluscs from diseases. Only the prophylactic approach is possible; this approach is based on a zoosanitary surveillance of mollusc populations and/or a development of resistant populations against some diseases. Created in 1986, the French network for surveillance and monitoring of mollusc health (REPAMO) ensures the...

Abarnou, Alain; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Miossec, Laurence; Batt, Agnes.
Chlorination of wastewater prior to effluent discharge into the sea is used as disinfecting treatment to preserve salubrity of the coastal marine environment wich is necessary for such activities as shellfish-farming and nautical sports. The disinfecting capacity of chlorine results from its oxydizing property which gives rise to various chemical reactions with constituents present in wastes. ln wastewaters, highly loaded with organic matter and ammonia, monochloramine is the main active chlorine species. Due to organic matter oxydation, thèse active chlorine species rapidly disappear by transformation into non toxic chloride. However, a very sm ail part of the initial chlorine dose can be found as stable and toxic chloroorganics. Monochloramine is also...

Miossec, Laurence.
The Water Framework Directive uses the “One-out, all-out” (OAOO) principle in assessing water bodies (i.e. the worst status of the elements used in the assessment determines the final status of the water body). Combination of multiple parameters within a biological quality element (BQEs) can be done in different ways. This study analysed several aggregation conditions within the BQE "Flora other than phytoplankton" (intertidal macroalgae, subtidal macroalgae, eelgrass beds and opportunistic blooms) using monitoring data collected along the Channel and Atlantic coastline. Four aggregation criteria were tested on two sets of data collected between 2004 and 2014: OOAO, average, intermediate method between OOAO and average and a method taking into account an...

The REPAMO network (network ofmollusc pathology), created in 1986, ensures the survey of shellfish health status along French coasts according? to European Directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EEC. The aims of the network are 1 - to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens, 2-to study the means to decrease the impact of pathogens already present and to survey their evolution. In 2003, the REPAMO network focused on the survey oflisted diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis) in two areas under agreement process (Banc de Granville and zone X) and on the study of abnormal morlalities. Number of reported abnormal morlalities has increased in 2003. This rise can be partly explained by the recent network restructuring, but also by the summer heatwave and...

Saulnier, Denis; Reynaud, Yann; Arzul, Isabelle; Miossec, Laurence; Le Roux, Frédérique; Goarant, Cyrille.
According to the world organisation for animal health (OIE) an emerging disease is defined as a recently admitted serious illness, whose aetiology can, or not, have already been established, and which is likely to be propagated within a population or between populations, for example at the time of international exchanges of aquatic animals and/or products of aquatic animals. Even though the emerging diseases that affect human health have been much studied, those which affect marine organisms and species of aquaculture interest in particular are poorly documented. By restricting emergence to only infectious diseases, we aim at presenting in a non-exhaustive way some scenarios of the emergence of the diseases of aquacultured species by illustrating them with...

Viral gametocytic hypertrophy of Crassostrea gigas in France: from occasional records to disease emergence? ArchiMer
Garcia, Celine; Robert, Maeva; Arzul, Isabelle; Chollet, Bruno; Joly, Jean-pierre; Miossec, Laurence; Comtet, Thierry; Berthe, Franck.
Viral gametocytic hypertrophy was reported for the first time in 2001 in Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in France. Since this date, the number of reported cases and the distribution area have increased every year; however, the cases are not associated with macroscopic signs or increased mortality rates. Both male and female gametes were hypertrophied and basophilic inclusions were observed in gamete nuclei, Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of viral particles in these intranuclear basophilic inclusions. These particles had characteristics similar to those of the Papillomaviridae and Polyomaviridae families: they were small, non-enveloped, icosahedral, and 44 to 56 nm in diameter, The viral particles were found in male, female and...
