The European project LIVESEED (www.liveseed.eu) is based on the concept that cultivars adapted to organic systems are key for realizing the full potential of organic agriculture in Europe. LIVESEED will help to establish a level playing field in the organic seed market across Europe, improve the competitiveness of the organic seed and breeding sector, and encourage greater use of organic seeds by farmers. LIVESEED will improve guidelines for cultivar testing and strategies for ensuring seed health. It will develop innovative breeding approaches suited to organic farming. Finally, it will investigate socio-economic aspects relating to the use and production of organic seed and their interaction with relevant (EU) regulations. The LIVESEED project (2017 –... |

The presentation provides a short overview of organic farmign support in the European Union, where government intervention has been very important for the development of the sector. Initiatives of individual governments in the 80s were followed by European Regulations on organic standards and setting the framework for financial support to organic producers under agri-environment support. Initial focus on conversion support resulted in imbalances in supply and market but also provided impetus for market growth. The focus now more on integrated policies (action plans) integrating pull and push measures. The presentation concludes that governments need to be clear about why organic farming is worth supporting. |

This report describes the attitudes of converting and conventional producers in England to organic production. In 2000, a telephone survey was conducted of farmers in three groups: those who were converting, those who had contacted OCIS but decided not to convert, and a random sample of conventional farmers. The majority of converting farmers gave concerns about agrochemicals and fears about the future profitability of conventional farming as their main reasons for going organic. Marketing was not seen as an obstacle to conversion. Conventional farmers thought that advice and information on organic production were easily obtained, but converting farmers did not agree, suggesting that there was a shortage of more advanced knowledge. Non-converters gave... |

The paper illustrates the role and activities of Technology Platform Organics (TP Organics) in addressing the requirement that research in organic food and farming systems generates output of relevance to wider end-users. It describes approaches to research and knowledge exchange and suggests that a more participatory approach can improve organic research outcomes. It describes different models of research and knowledge exchange and their pros and cons. The criteria for success of a participatory approach to research also need to be different. These are discussed. |

This is the final report from the Defra project OF0103 In the UK fewer than 50 dairy farms were registered as organic in June 1995. The slow increase of farmers willing to convert to organic milk production was seen as one impediment for development of the organic milk market. The overall objective of this joint 3-year project was to monitor the physical, environmental and financial implications of conversion to organic milk production on a research farm (Ty Gwyn) and ten commercial farms in southwest England and Wales, in order to provide policy makers and farmers with more information about the consequences of conversion. Although the size of the sample is comparably small it represents about 20% of all organic dairy farms in the UK and an even larger... |

The purpose of the paper is to explore the values that underlie consumers purchasing decisions of organic food. It draws on data from focus groups and laddering interviews with a total of 181 regular and occasional consumers of organic food that were contrasted with survey results of other studies. The results show that most consumers associate organic at first with vegetables and fruit and a healthy diet with organic products. Fruit and vegetables are also the first and in many cases only experience with buying organic product. The decision-making process is complex and the importance of motives and barriers may vary between product categories. Future research should consider tradeoffs that consumers make between values and product as well as consumer... |

Organic farming is knowledge intensive. To support farmers in improve yields and organic agriculture systems, there is a need to improve how knowledge is shared. There is an established culture of sharing ideas, successes and failures in farming. The internet and information technologies open-up new opportunities for knowledge exchange involving farmers, researchers, advisors and other practitioners. The OK-Net Arable brought together practitioners from regional Farmer Innovation Groups across Europe in a multi-actor project to explore how online knowledge exchange could be improved. Feedback from the groups was obtained for 36 'tools', defined as end-user materials, such as technical guides, videos on websites informing about practices in organic... |

This paper explores how agroecological approaches can contribute to sustainable intensification. There is an ongoing debate on how we can produce the required levels of food the world needs on existing farmland, while minimising environmental impacts. The ‘sustainable intensification’ concept has been proposed to reconcile these two objectives. In parallel, there is a growing interest in how agroecological approaches can contribute to the world’s food security. We reviewed the evidence for a large range of agroecological practices and made a close comparison between conventional agricultural systems and integrated agriculture, organic farming and agroforestry, comparing on a range of factors. Overall, the study found that agroecological approaches can... |

Over the last decade the development of Organic Action Plans (OAPs) has gained momentum as a mechanism for achieving a more integrated and balanced approach to organic policy-making in different European countries and at EU level. However the uptake, effectiveness and continuity of OAPs can vary significantly from country to country. For inst ance differing government priorities, the lack of ring-fenced public funding and the expectation that the organic sector should take the lead rather than government can impede the development of OAPs. This guide looks at the current status of OAPs in EU and EFTA countries with a special focus on plans at national and regional level and an in-depth analysis of six OAPs in the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany,... |

Organic farming is knowledge intensive and in supporting farmers in enhancing their production systems, there is a need to improve how knowledge is shared. This is the overall aim of the OK Net Arable project. Work Package 2 of the project is concerned with facilitating the testing of practical and educational materials with farmer innovation groups to improve knowledge provision in this sector. The work package adopts an interactive multi-actor approach, bringing together practitioners from regional innovation groups with each other, and with advisers and scientists. This report presents feedback from farmers and advisors on knowledge exchange tools on the range of topics addressed in this project (such as soil and nutrient management, weed control,... |

Members of the organic supply chain need high-quality data to make correct investment decisions, but data with sufficient depth and quality are not widely available in Europe. The quality of available data is a key concern for both data collectors and data users. The aim of this study is to identify whether the commonly used quality attributes (accuracy, coherence, comparability, timeliness, punctuality, accessibility, relevance), which have been developed from the perspective of data collectors, are also appropriate from the perspective of end users of organic market data. A further aim is to assess whether the data quality needs of end users are being met by the existing data. The results of two surveys carried out in Europe, one of data collectors and... |

This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. On organic dairy farms, computer simulation models can be used to predict more rapidly and at less cost than field trials the outcome of changes to management strategies or physical resource inputs. Such models need to be validated with data from existing organic dairy farms to ensure that the predictions made are realistic. As part of a larger organic dairy farm modelling project, this study will use data from 2 contrasting organic dairy systems at Ty Gwyn research farm, to validate a whole farm dairy system model developed by the Scottish Agricultural College. The model will be used in future work to identify the most productive and resource use efficient organic dairy systems across a... |
