A brief survey of the sea-food markets for the northern Mediterranean countries is presented, i.e. for Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. Then a comparative study between the markets belonging to the European Union is completed. Three of these countries (France, Italy and Spain) are characterised by a huge deficit in their external sea-products trade. Greece is almost balanced, but Portugal has been importing increasingly more over the last few years. About 45% of the imports come from the European Union. After many years of increasing value, we can now see a stabilisation in the fish price. Since 1977, the consumption of fresh products has been receding in favour of frozen and processed products. Cultured salmon and shrimp which... |

In the framework of French-Brazil co-operation, the French Institute of research for exploitation of the sea (IFREMER), the State of Bahia and the company Littoral Sul Maricultura have developed a new technique for shrimp farming (Penaeus vannamei) using floating cages. After trials carried out during three years, this technique turns out very interesting from several viewpoints. The growth speed and the survival rate are very good, the negative effects on the environmental quality are weak and local fishermen have proved eager to adopt this technique as a part-time activity. In the same time, a technico-economic analysis, using a computerised simulation tool, as well as a market analysis in the State of Bahia have been carried out in order to assess the... |

Aquaculture is an economic activit y which is characterised by a great dependence on environmental conditions. Therefore, aquaculture development is subdued to institutional context which defines the rules for use and conservation of natural resources. This paper analyses the impact of marine environment regulations on economic operating of aquaculture enterprises and on industrial d ynamics. Because aquaculture enterprises use common goods, an economic approach of aquaculture has to take into account not only the relations between enterprises and environment, but also the relations between the enterprises themselves, through production externalities. In this study, several economic tools are considered in order to incite enterprises to integrate parr of... |

Aquaculture in France is characterised by great species diversity. Furthermore, traditional activities (farming of marine shellfish and freshwater fish) coexist with still-developing recent ones (marine fish farming, new pratices in shellfish rearing, etc.). Traditional cultures are the main contributors to the tonnage produced and employment generated. Another noticeable point is the importance of the western part of the country, which carries the main part of the production (> 80 %): the Channel Atlantic coast for shellfish, and nearby rivers for freshwater salmonid farming. On the Mediterranean coast, marine fish farming of bass and bream, as well as shellfish production by new methods (mussels on longlines in open waters), are developing. Important... |

The development of king scallop (Pecten maximus) culture in France has been subsidised by the State and the Brittany Region for the past 10 years. Technical progress has been made and the public authorities now wish to know if this activity is economically feasible. While continuing research to improve the performance of this type of shellfish culture (culture techniques and physiology), Ifremer (public institute for oceanological research) also undertook an economic assessment on costs, marketability and legal and social limitations. The study of the costs of production presented here was carried out by analysing a pilot farm. This approach helped detail the financial needs and the degree of profitability of scallop farming. |

Aquaculture production in the Mediterranean showed a constant increase over the years. The current production reached 790000 Tm, in 1994. This represents about 5% of global aquaculture production. Although the Mediterranean aquaculture is moving mainly to shellfish (67.8%), fish production (31%) is increasing steadily. The production of marine fish is characterized by the dominance of two species, loubine and sea bream. These represent 35000 tonnes / year (...). [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

France is one of the world top producers of oysters and mussels by aquaculture with 140 000 tonnes of oysters, 60 000 tonnes of mussels and an ex-farm turnover accounting to 350 millions US$ in 1996. The French market is by far the largest one in Europe for oyster and is supplied entirely by domestic production, with very little external trade. On the contrary, the French market for mussel is a very competitive one, widely open to imports. Given the evolution of market conditions due to the development of supermarkets, to the competition of new value added products and to the modification of consumer's habits, the French oyster and mussel producers have started to implement various strategies of product differentiation and of quality approach. These... |

Should one favour small artisanal aquaculture enterprises or industrial production units? Should one specialize in a single stage of the breeding cycle or, on the contrary, cover several stages of the production chain and even include the processing and marketing of the product? Most of the questions asked to economists about the development of aquaculture refer to the size and integration level of the enterprises. (unverified OCR) |

This paper is aimed at analysing the similar trends and different constraints which influence marine fish farming of new species such as sea-bass, sea-bream and turbot in Europe in comparison with the Norwegian salmon farming success. In a general context of low progression, European aquaculture has been characterised by the development of intensive fish farming. The most notable fact is the recent increase in intensive salmonid farming, with a turnover of almost 2 millions Ecu. More recently, the intensive farming of sea bass and sea bream has increased very rapidly in the Mediterranean Basin, although on a more reduced extent. Turbot farming is developing slowly too on the French and Spanish Atlantic coast, taking benefit of the temperate climate in... |

Despite its youth, aquaculture is faced with market difficulties which make profitability of the activity more and more difficult to reach. Time is long gone when the price ofsome top-grade sea products was very high and the demand seemed limitless. In a context of uncertainty concerning economic conditions, institutional rules and characteristics of the demand, it is very important to have tools to facilitate decision-making by investors, bankers, entrepreneurs, researchers and public-policy makers. The first tool we propose is the market analysis. This is necessary to check adequacy between supply and demand. It is aimed at describing the present state of the market for a range of products (origin, characteristics, seasonality, volume and price) in order... |
