In the New Caledonian lagoon, fish populations live in a highly-fragmented habitat and seascape, and many are exploited by commercial, recreational and subsistence fishers. Although fishing has been increasing over decades, fisheries sustainability has not been assessed. We used the ISIS-Fish tool to build a spatially-explicit dynamic model for two major fish resources: spangled emperor and coral trout. The model was constructed and parameterized from many existing data habitat, fish populations, and fishing pressures. After calibration, it was used to simulate the outcomes of several management scenarios including MPA, size limitation, and increase in commercial fisher number. Results showed that depending on the species, an MPA could result in a... |

- The AMBIO project conducted a comprehensive video-based baseline assessment of coral reef fish communities and associated habitats in the New Caledonian lagoons. The survey relies on remote unbaited underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. - The study pertains to the reefs of Astrolabe, Pétrie and Walpole Island, located within the Coral Sea Natural Park. The survey conducted in 2014 covers the entire area, and the sampling design was stratified according to reef type. 95 stations were validated. They were analyzed to characterize the habitat surrounding each station, and fish communities, based on a list of 565 fish species (cf. AMBIO/A/1). - 28 indicators were computed and mapped (maps available on a Sextant server).... |

The overexploitation of fishery resources has led to a major fisheries crisis. In this context, artisanal fisheries, and in particular small-scale coastal fisheries, appear as relevant alternatives for a sustainable use of coastal resources. Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are more and more used as management tools for these fisheries, as protection effects and targeted access regulations may benefit to commercial fishers. Managers and scientists need then quantitative information not only to adapt their management to the fishing activity present on their territory, but also to estimate the effects of MPA management on it. This study provides catch and effort estimates that are essential for appraising and managing the artisanal fishery in the Côte Bleue... |

Estimating diversity and abundance of fish species is fundamental for understanding community structure and dynamics of coral reefs. When designing a sampling protocol, one crucial step is the choice of the most suitable sampling technique which is a compromise between the questions addressed, the available means and the precision required. The objective of this study is to compare the ability to sample reef fish communities at the same locations using two techniques based on the same stationary point count method: one using Underwater Visual Census (UVC) and the other rotating video (STAVIRO). UVC and STAVIRO observations were carried out on the exact same 26 points on the reef slope of an intermediate reef and the associated inner barrier reefs. STAVIRO... |

Environmental management decisions based upon indicators are the end point of a process involving stakeholders and scientists. These steps should be explicit and follow a chronology. This paper presents a general framework for the design and use of management-oriented indicators, integrating management questions and performance criteria. We first examined the desirable characteristics of indicators aimed at providing decision-support for marine environmental management. Ideally, one should select the indicator that guarantees a safe and unambiguous decision leading to the appropriate measures in terms of regulation, remediation or control. In the present study, indicators are assessed according to two criteria: relevance and effectiveness. Relevance... |

- The AMBIO project conducted a comprehensive video-based baseline assessment of coral reef fish communities and associated habitats in the New Caledonian lagoons. The surveys rely on remote unbaited underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. Chesterfield and Bellona remote reefs and atolls are located in the Coral Sea Marine Park, northwest of New Caledonia. -This 2013 survey is the first scientific survey covering the entire area, with a sampling design stratified according to reef type. 203 stations were validated within 10 days. They were analyzed to characterize the habitat surrounding each station, and fish communities, based on a list of 565 fish species (cf. AMBIO/A/1). - 34 indicators were computed and mapped (maps... |

This article first draws up a balance sheet of all various implemented techniques to observe and monitor the shallow marine biodiversity. Then the article focuses on the techniques of the rotating high resolution submarine video and their implementation in New Caledonia on various sites and habitats under various management / protection policies such as Marines Protected Areas, strict marine reserves, registered sites on UNESCO world heritage or free access zones. An evaluation of these techniques and of their contributions is proposed in terms of transfer to other geographical zones, of practical feasibility in the technical, logistic and cost point of view as also are analyzed the perspectives offered by those technologies in terms of innovation, of... |

This study is conducted within the AMBIO project, focused on the biodiversity of New Caledonian lagoons. It aims at assessing the ecological impact of touristic cruises in the Baie du Santal at Lifou Island. A survey conducted in 2014 using the remote unbaited underwater video STAVIRO rotating technique, enabled to validate 133 stations, which were then analyzed to characterize the habitat surrounding each station, and fish communities, based on a list of 565 fish species. 15 indicators were computed and mapped (maps available on a Sextant server). They were analysed using the PAMPA computing tool. Outcomes were organized in a dashboard for each management objective (biodiversity conservation and fisheries management). 122 fish species (plus turtle and... |

For the first time ever at such a spatial scale, the EPICURE project is using the complementary exosystemic, functional and fisheries approaches to analyze and compare the partially exploited fish‐populating structure of the Geyser, Zélée, and Iris banks. This project focuses on three main points, which are 1) a habitat map of the three banks and an assessment of the live coral coverage as a proxy of the Geyser bank’s health, 2) a description of fish assemblages and a functional analysis relative to habitat type and time and 3) an estimate of the abundance index in structure size of the main exploited stocks. Overall, 42 habitats over 268 km² were mapped on the Geyser bank with 534 field verifications. On the Zélée bank, 24 habitats were mapped over 183... |

Marine reserves constitute effective tools for preserving fish stocks and associated human benefits. However, not all reserves perform equally, and predicting the response of marine communities to management actions in the long run is challenging. Our decadal-scale survey of recreational fishing yields at France’s 45-year old Cerbère-Banyuls marine reserve indicated significant protection benefits, with 40–50% higher fishing yields per unit effort in the partial-protection zone of the reserve (where fishing is permitted but at a lower level) than in surrounding non-reserve areas. Over the period 2005–2014, catch per unit effort (CPUE) declined both inside and outside the reserve, while weight per unit effort (WPUE) increased by 131% inside and decreased by... |

The ability of captive-reared turtles to survive in the wild is not precisely known, nor are movements of immature turtles in the open ocean. To provide information on these issues, a satellite tracking experiment was conducted in the western Indian Ocean to monitor oceanic movements of immature green turtles. Two wild turtles and four captive-reared individuals were tracked. The latter had been displaced after birth from nesting sites to a distant rearing site. Wild turtles survived after release, but did not move far away from release site. We hypothesize that this resident behaviour may be explained by stage-specific habitat requirements. Captive-reared turtles survived after release and migrated over thousands of kilometres. Among these, the oldest... |

The aim of the PAMPA project (Indicators of Marine Protected Areas performance for managing coastal ecosystems, resources and their uses) was to develop tools and methodologies for assessing MPA performance. Most of these tools are made freely available. This guide contains the information needed to understand and utilize the PAMPA methodologies, and interpret their outcomes. It can be used for monitoring-based assessments from either ecological data or use-related data, provided that these data are formatted according to the requested entry format. The "Biodiversity and resource" platform is very flexible and enables calculating a large variety of indicators at different spatial scale, and for different sets of taxa The "Uses" platform is to our knowledge... |
