The objectives of this study are to increase our understanding of the mass mortality phenomena in Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas in the Thau lagoon and to examine the effect of cultivation practises. Mortality events in 2009 and 2010 always coincide with simple or dual infections involving primarily the Herpes virus OsHV-I and secondarily the bacteria Vibrio splendidus, when seawater temperature is between 17°C and 24°C. In the Thau lagoon, mortality starts early May and last until fall with an interruption period when seawater temperature is higher than 24°C in July and August. Mortality of oysters varies as a function of zootechnical life-history, hydrodynamics and cultivation practises. First, mortality depends on whether or not oysters have been... |

In the context of global change, increasing mariculture production has raised particular concerns regarding its environmental impact and sustainability. Molluscs and particularly blue mussel account for a significant part of this total production. Although blue mussels are considered as pretty resilient to environmental disturbances, we report in this study an unprecedented mussel mortality event that occurred during the winter 2014 in the Breton Sound. 9000 metric tonnes of mussels were lost and mortality rates up to 100% were recorded at some farming areas. Through a coupling approach, the present work aimed to better understand the potential environmental drivers associated to those mortalities. Firstly we analysed long-term in situ and satellite data... |

Although there are a number of ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) variants, it is expected that the true diversity of this virus will be known only after the analysis of significantly more data. To this end, we analyzed 72 OsHV-1 "specimens" collected mainly in France over an 18-year period, from 1993 to 2010. Additional samples were also collected in Ireland, the United States, China, Japan, and New Zealand. Three virus genome regions (open reading frame 4 [ORF4], ORF35, -36, -37, and -38, and ORF42 and -43) were selected for PCR analysis and sequencing. Although ORF4 appeared to be the most polymorphic genome area, distinguishing several genogroups, ORF35, -36, -37, and -38 and ORF42 and -43 also showed variations useful in grouping subpopulations of this... |

Massive mortality outbreaks have been reported in France since 2008 among Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, with the detection of a particular OsHV-1 variant called μVar. Virus infection can be induced in healthy spat in experimental conditions allowing to better understand the disease process, including viral gene expression. Although gene expression of other herpesviruses has been widely studied, we provide the first study following viral gene expression of OsHV-1 over time. In this context, an in vivo transcriptomic study targeting 39 OsHV-1 genes was carried out during an experimental infection of Pacific oyster spat. For the first time, several OsHV-1 mRNAs were detected by real-time PCR at 0 h, 2 h, 4 h, 18 h, 26 h and 42 h post injection. Several... |

In France, today, more than 80% of farmed blue mussel seed collection is based on larvae fixation on collector ropes. Mussels are traditionally grown on bouchot, which are rows of wooden poles placed perpendicularly to the shore, stuck in the ground within the gently sloping intertidal strip. Mussels are transferred either as seed attached on collecting ropes or as juveniles placed in net sockings and then wound up around the poles or suspended to longlines, where they will fatten and grow (Garen et al., 2004). In order to optimize seed collection and to limit unwanted biofouling on ropes, mussel growers local organizations identify best timing of seed collector ropes deployment by monitoring the number and size of planktonic mussel larvae from water... |

Marine environment contamination can affect fishing and shellfish farming products (and shellfish in the first place), thus making them improper for human consumption, threatening public health and producer’s business. Analysis and health risk management are mandatory for consumer’s security and shellfish production survival. About microbial risk, monitoring shellfish production areas and several studies carried by LERPC laboratory give a good view of the microbial contamination impacting the Pertuis Charentais shellfish production area. On the other hand, State-Region Plan Contract (CPER) studies results from 2007 to 2013 are presented and discussed; additionally, the law-prescribed sanitary studies for professional on foot-fishing classification are... |

Since 2014 in France, in Charente maritime and Vendée, farmed and stocks of blue mussels experienced strong mortality events. In this context, the « MORBLEU » research project (DPMA-Ifremer agreement) was initiated to explore potentially aggravating factors, associated or correlated with mortality of mussels. Here, the work is to study biotic factors in mussels environment, looking for describe diversity and evolution of microbial communities (water column) before, during and after mortality events using NGS technology (metabarcoding) for environmental DNA analysis. We present, sampling strategy used from 2015 to 2018, Material & Methods and some preliminary results. |
