Contribution to a synopsis of marine species richness in the Pertuis Charentais Sea with new insights in soft-bottom macrofauna of the Marennes-Oleron Bay ArchiMer
De Montaudouin, Xavier; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
The catalogue of soft-bottom macrofauna in the Marennes-Oleron Bay (French Atlantic coast) has been updated from a benthic survey conducted in April-May 1995. 262 stations were selected using a stratified random strategy based on sediment types and bathymetric levels. 231 soft-bottom macrofauna species were identified. A synopsis of all available literature since the first local marine study published in 1710 by Antoine Ferchauld de Reaumur indicated that 60 benthic species were reported in the Marennes-Oleron Bay for the first time. The sampling effort, i.e. more than 1 station per km(2) and size of the sieving square mesh (1 mm), can partially explain these results. Most of the new recorded species were crustaceans (28 species) and polychaete annelids...

Malet, Nathalie; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Haure, Joel.
Japanese oysters previously reared in controlled conditions were replaced into the Marennes Oléron Bay on intertidal oyster parks during 2002 summertime. Kinetics of carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios was followed in 5 organs (digestive gland, gills, mantle, muscle and gonads). Results confirmed excepted significant differences in isotopie signatures between organs and revealed differences in the time required reaching equilibrium with the isotopie signatures of local food sources.

ArchiMer
Haure, Joel; Papin, Mathias; Palvadeau, Hubert; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Nourry, Max; Penisson, Christian; Dupuy, Beatrice; Martin, Jean-louis.

Bacher, Cedric; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.

High-throughput phenotyping of health biomarkers in Crassostrea gigas by magnetic resonance imaging ArchiMer
Francois, Cyrille; Quellec, Stéphane; Collewet, Guylaine; Peyramaure, Paul; Musse, Maja; Lamy, Jean-baptiste; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Haure, Joel.
High-throughput phenotyping of shellfish’s traits constitutes a challenge due to the specificities of aquatic animals. Appropriate measuring tools have often to be developed or adapted, in order to continuously and automatically acquire data of biomarkers of interest. IMAGIGAS project aimed to explore a non-destructive and non-invasive approach by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to monitor at high-throughput two biomarkers (body weight and temperature) of the pacific oyster, before and during infectious challenges by Ostreid Herpesvirus type 1 (OsHV-1). Pacific oysters and OsHV-1 suspension and contaminated seawater were produced at Ifremer facilities. The experiments were conducted in 2016-2017 by three staffs (Ifremer LGPMM, Irstea IRM Food,...

Stock assessment of wild soft-bottom molluscs formed part of a study carried out in the Marennes-Oléron oyster-farming bay. The sampling design was based on a stratified random sampling. The results are presented using three descriptors: species richness, abundance and biomass. In spring 1984, wild molluscs corresponded to nearly 20% of oyster-rearing stocks. Knowledge of the feeding behaviour and geographical distribution of the various trophic groups within the bay enables to estimate trophic competition with the cultivated species (Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus edulis). Five trophic groups were specified: suspension-feeders, deposit-feeders, suspension/deposit feeders, carnivores and herbivores. Their organization in terms of species number seemed to...

In costal systems, particulate organic matter (POM) results from a multiplicity of sources having their respective dynamics in terms of production, decomposition, transport and burial. The POM pool experiences thus considerable spatial and temporal variability. In order to better understand this variability, the present study employs statistical multivariate analyses to investigate links between POM composition and environmental forcings for a panel of twelve coastal systems distributed along the three maritime regions of France and monitored weekly to monthly for 1 to 8 years. At multi-system scale, two main gradients of POC composition have been identified: a ‘Continent-Ocean’ gradient associated with hydrodynamics, sedimentary dynamics and depth of the...

Needle in a haystack: involvement of the copepod Paracartia grani, in the life-cycle of the oyster pathogen Marteilia refringens ArchiMer
Audemard, Corinne; Le Roux, Frédérique; Barnaud, Antoine; Collins, Catherine; Sautour, B; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; De Montaudouin, X; Coustau, C; Combes, C; Berthe, Franck.
Marteilia refringens is a major pathogen of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis Linnaeus. Since its description, the lifecycle of this protozoan parasite has eluded discovery. Attempts to infect oysters experimentally have been unsuccessful and led to the hypothesis of a complex life-cycle involving several hosts. Knowledge of this life-cycle is of central importance in order to manage oyster disease. However, the exploration of M. refringens life-cycle has been previously limited by the detection tools available and the tremendous number of species to be screened in enzootic areas. In this study, these two restrictions were circumvented by the use of both molecular detection tools and a mesocosm with low biodiversity. Screening of the entire fauna of...

Invasion of the eastern Bay of Biscay by the nassariid gastropod Cyclope neritea: origin and effects on resident fauna ArchiMer
Bachelet, G; Simon-bouhet, B; Desclaux, C; Garcia-meunier, P; Mairesse, G; De Montaudouin, X; Raigne, H; Randriambao, K; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Viard, F.
The distribution area of the nassariid gastropod Cyclope neritea (L.) includes the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, as well as the Atlantic coasts of the southern Iberian Peninsula. The species has spread north to the eastern Bay of Biscay (Arcachon Bay in 1976, Marennes-Oleron area and Morbihan Gulf in 1983-84). This spread might be explained either by (1) a natural spread favoured by environmental changes (e.g. an increase of temperature) or (2) a sudden range expansion due to the introduction of individuals from distant native populations. Molecular genetic analyses based on mitochondrial markers suggest that the present C. neritea population in Arcachon Bay has been introduced, probably unintentionally with oyster transfers, from several source...

Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Pichocki-seyfried, C; Walker, P; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Palud, Cecile; Heral, Maurice.
Extensive and detailed subtidal ground mapping of the Marennes-Oleron Bay and Fouras-Aix areas was performed with a side-scan sonar. Side-scan sonographs gave a comprehensive view of sedimentological bottom environments and also allowed us to outline locations of grounds colonised by the gastropod mollusc Crepidula fornicata L. with a precise estimate of their surface. A sedimentological map of the centre of the Marennes-Oleron Bay is given, describing spatial organisation of the following four types of sediment: pure mud, fine sand, coarse sand and rocks. Crepidula beds were also recognised on sonographs and were estimated to cover 181 hectares in the Fouras-Aix area and 615 hectares within the Marennes-Oleron Bay. Standard sampling methods were then...

Shellfish areas usually receive a large number of introduced species. During the present project, we specially focused on 4 marine benthic molluscs introduced in shellfish areas along the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France: the gastropods Crepidula fornicata, Ocinebrellus inornatus and Cyclope neritea, and the bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum. Our study was conducted according to three main axes: (i) the characterization of introduction and expansion patterns of species within their newly colonized area. In the three invasive gastropods C. fornnicata, C. neritea and 0. inornatus, a high level of genetic diversity was detected in the French populations which indicated a complex process of introduction (with multiple population sources or secondary...

Influence of hydro-sedimentary factors on mollusc death assemblages in a temperate mixed tide-and-wave dominated coastal environment: Implications for the fossil record ArchiMer
Poirier, Clement; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Chaumillon, Eric; Bertin, Xavier.
Mollusc death assemblages were recovered in 98 subtidal sampling stations on the seafloor of the shallow Pertuis Charentais Sea (Atlantic coast of France). Taxonomic composition and spatial distribution of death assemblages were investigated, as well as their response to sediment grain size (field data), bottom shear stress (coupled tide and wave hydrodynamic modelling), and sediment budget (bathymetric difference map) Results showed that molluscs are likely to be reliable paleoenvironmental indicators since death assemblages were able to acquire ecological changes within years (decadal-scale taphonomic inertia), and live-dead agreement inferred from existing data on living benthic communities was high, except close to river mouths and intertidal mudflats...

Cadmium pathways in an exploited intertidal ecosystem with chronic cadmium inputs (Marennes-Oleron, Atlantic coast, France) ArchiMer
Pigeot, J; Miramand, P; Guyot, T; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Fichet, D; Le Moine, Olivier; Huet, V.
The Marennes-Oleron Bay is subject to chronic pollution by cadmium (Cd) from the Gironde watershed. An ecosystem approach was used to study the fate of cadmium in the different biological compartments. The median Cd concentration was 0.4 mu g g(-1) dry weight for the 63 benthic species measured. When combined with the respective biomasses for the different species studied, we estimated that 7 kg of Cd is partitioned into the soft tissues of the benthic species in the bay. The majority of this cadmium was distributed between primary producers, mainly microphytobenthos (40 %), and suspension-feeders, mainly oysters (40 %). All other benthic species measured were associated with negligible masses of Cd. Two trophic levels contained 98 % of the Cd: 3 kg was...

The consistency of satellite and in situ time series of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), Turbidity and Total Suspended Matters (TSM) was investigated at 17 coastal stations throughout the year 2017. These stations covered different water types, from relatively clear waters in the Mediterranean Sea to moderately turbid regions in the Bay of Biscay and the southern bight of the North-Sea. Satellite retrievals were derived from MODIS/AQUA, VIIRS/NPP and OLCI-A/Sentinel-3 spectral reflectance. In situ data were obtained from the coastal phytoplankton networks SOMLIT (CNRS), REPHY (Ifremer) and associated networks. Satellite and in situ retrievals of the year 2017 were compared to the historical seasonal cycles and percentiles, 10 and 90, observed in situ. Regarding the...

Impact of the oyster Crassostrea gigas on a microbial community in Atlantic coastal ponds near La Rochelle ArchiMer
Dupuy, Christine; Pastoureaud, Annie; Ryckaert, Mireille; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Montanie, Hélène.
To assess the in situ impact of oysters Crassostrea gigas on planktonic protist and bacteria communities and the potential contribution of protozoa to their food resource intake, the abundance and the diversity of protists and bacteria were followed in 2 Atlantic coastal ponds, with and without oysters. The protist biomass in such ponds was high, with a maximum in spring of 982 mug C l(-1) and a minimum in winter of 179 pg C l(-1). Whatever the season, the presence of oysters (20 m(-2) corresponding to an average of 23 mg dry weight m(-2)) induced a significant decrease in >5 pm protist abundance. On the contrary, planktonic organisms <5 pm, such as Chlorophyta flagellates and bacteria, developed similarly in both ponds. It can be assumed that such...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Bouchet, Vincent; Malestroit, Pascal; Seugnet, Jean-luc; Blouin, Frederic; Radford-knoery, Joël; Burgeot, Thierry; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
In the scope of the study of the "on-bottom/off-bottom" mortality model in the south of the Marennes Oléron Bay, the result of the 2003 multidisciplinary study (Dynamor) appears to be the hypothesis of an acute stress, "ultimate" trigger of the mortality episodes in June. In 2004 we aim to look for the nature of this stress through the physico-chemical analysis of the sediment (Eh, pH, sulphides and ammoniacal nitrogen), the organic matter and chlorophyll load on the surface of the sediment between April and July. Herbicides are also measured in the water column, south of the bay (Seudre), during the same period. A "precocious" (around the first week of June) and "weak" (lower mortality rate on this working site since 1997) mortality peak happens when the...

Interacting effects of Hydrobia ulvae bioturbation and microphytobenthos on the erodibility of mudflat sediments ArchiMer
Orvain, Francis; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Sygut, A; Joassard, Lucette; Le Hir, Pierre.
Microphytobenthos-macrofauna sediment interactions and their effects on sediment erodability were examined in laboratory experiments. Sediment beds were manipulated in a tidal mesocosm to produce diatom mats in exponential or in stationary phases of development after 6, 8 or 11 d of culture. These sediment beds were used in flume experiments to investigate the influence of bioturbation by the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae on both sediment and pigment resuspension as a function of the physiological state of the microphytobenthic mats. In most experiments, only a surface layer was resuspended. A model was used to analyse in detail the contribution of each variable to this surface-layer erosion. Bioturbation was the major factor controlling resuspension, and its...
