SOCIAL AND SCALE EFFICIENCY GAINS DUE TO VERTICAL INTEGRATION IN THE U.S. HOG SECTOR AgEcon
Helmers, Glenn A.; Shaik, Saleem; Atwood, Joseph A..
Using a non-parametric linear programming approach, our contribution is (1) to examine if efficiency gains in hog production are realized due to vertical integration and (2) to demonstrate the efficiency gains that are realized are a product of economies of scope and scale. The model uses U.S. hog sector data for the period, 1982-1997. Results indicate efficiency gains are realized due to vertical integration and can be explained by scope and scale efficiency gains. The t-test at the 5% level of significance indicates the mean overall efficiency gains; scope efficiency gains and scale efficiency gains are significantly different from one.

AGGREGATION ISSUES IN THE ESTIMATION OF MALMQUIST PRODUCTIVITY MEASURES AgEcon
Shaik, Saleem.
The paper contributes by demonstrating the sensitivity of nonparametric programming productivity measures to the choice of model –time series versus panel models of Malmquist productivity, and to various levels of commodity aggregation compared to the traditional Tornqvist-Theil index approach employing U.S. state-level data from 1960-96. To illustrate the sensitive of nonparametric programming productivity measures, we compare the implicit shadow shares recovered from the dual values of the Malmquist productivity and total factor productivity methods to the observed shares of the Tornqvist-Theil index for U.S level data from 1948-1994.

The Structure Performance Hypothesis and The Efficient Structure Performance Hypothesis-Revisited: The Case of Agribusiness Commodity and Food Products Truck Carriers in the South AgEcon
Allen, Albert J.; Shaik, Saleem; Myles, Albert E.; Muhammad, Safdar.
Two competing hypotheses on market structure and performance of firms are the traditional structure-conduct-performance (SCP) paradigm and the efficiency structure hypothesis. This paper reveals the profits made by firms in the trucking industry were because of greater efficiencies than their competitors and not because of collusive activities.

Market Structure Conduct Performance Hypothesis Revisited Using Stochastic Frontier Efficiency Analysis AgEcon
Shaik, Saleem; Allen, Albert J.; Edwards, Seanicaa; Harris, James.
Stochastic frontier analysis, which is used to estimate the technical efficiency, is extended to examine the market structure, conduct and performance hypothesis for the U.S. trucking industry. The technical efficiency measure takes into account not only the relationship between inputs used in the production of output but also simultaneously examine the importance of market structure conduct factors on the performance of the firm. An empirical application to U.S. trucking carriers over the period 1994-2003 is examined. Results reveal that the variables average haul, average load, debt-to-equity and market concentration significantly affected technical efficiency. Capital, fixed and variable input variables were significant in the production function...

OPTIONAL UNIT POLICY IN CROP INSURANCE AgEcon
Shaik, Saleem; Atwood, Joseph A..
Utilizing ordered logit we examine the presence of two kinds of asymmetric information-adverse selection (intertemporal variability) and moral hazard (interspatial and/or residual variability) as revealed by the choice of optional units in Federal crop insurance utilizing Risk Management Agency's 1996-2000 cotton yield and loss data files. Further, a tobit model is estimated to examine the factors explaining the loss cost ratio from Risk Management Agency perspective. Potential costs of adverse selection and/or moral hazard in optional unit provision are estimated to be as high as $180 million in US cotton over the 1996-2000 period. Keywords: Adverse Selection, Moral Hazard, Optional Unit Policy, Crop Insurance, U.S. Cotton, Logit and Tobit models.

The Impact of Trade Openness on Technical Efficiency in U.S. Agriculture AgEcon
Miljkovic, Dragan; Shaik, Saleem.
This study addresses the impact of trade openness on technical efficiency in the U.S. agricultural sector. The results indicate that trade protectionism illustrated with a decrease in the share of agricultural imports in agricultural GDP led to an increase in technical efficiency. A change in the share of agricultural exports in agricultural GDP had no impact on technical efficiency. These results are partially consistent with the premise of the new trade theory, but also seem to be driven by the intricacies of the agricultural sector and agricultural policy in the United States and internationally.

ECONOMIES OF SCOPE AND SCALE EFFICIENCY GAINS DUE TO DIVERSIFICATION AgEcon
Helmers, Glenn A.; Shaik, Saleem.
Using a nonparametric linear programming approach, our contribution is to examine if efficiency gains in Western crop production are realized due to diversification and to demonstrate that the diversification efficiency gains realized are a product of economies of scope efficiency gains and scale efficiency gains. The analysis employed cropping sector data for six major crops for the period, 1975-1996. Results indicate efficiency gains are realized due to diversification for all the two-crop combinations.

Time-Varying Estimation of Crop Insurance Program in Altering North Dakota Farm Economic Structure AgEcon
Coleman, Jane A.; Shaik, Saleem.
This study examines how federal farm policies, specifically crop insurance, have affected the farm economic structure of North Dakota’s agriculture sector. The system of derived input demand equations is estimated to quantify the changes in North Dakota farmers’ input use when they purchase crop insurance. Further, the cumulative rolling regression technique is applied to capture the varying effects of the farm policies over time. Empirical results from the system of input demand functions indicate that there is no moral hazard since North Dakota farmers will increase fertilizer and pesticide use in the presence of crop insurance. Results also indicate that farmers in this state will not increase the use of land.

An Investigation of the Socioeconomic Impacts of Tri-State Bypass, 1970-2000 AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Shaik, Saleem; Hatch, L. Upton.
Geographical information systems and econometric tools were used to determine the socioeconomic impacts of bypasses in Atlanta-Birmingham Metropolitan area. Mean household income and per capita income of county is separately used as a proxy for anticipated bypass impact as a function, of socioeconomic variables: farm income, farm employment, non-farm employment, age groups, and population density. The cross-sectional and the time series data were pooled together and estimated as panel data. Results indicate that most of these variables have positive impacts on growth.

DIRECT AND INDIRECT SHADOW PRICE AND COST ESTIMATES OF NITROGEN POLLUTION ABATEMENT AgEcon
Shaik, Saleem; Helmers, Glenn A.; Langemeier, Michael R..
The implications of treating environmental pollution as an undesirable output (weak disposability) as well as a normal input (strong disposability) on the direct and indirect shadow price and cost estimates of nitrogen pollution abatement is analyzed using Nebraska agriculture sector data. The shadow price of nitrogen pollution abatement treated as an undesirable output represents the reduced revenue from reducing nitrogen pollution. In contrast, the shadow price of nitrogen pollution abatement treated as an input reflects the increased cost of reducing nitrogen pollution. For the 1936-97 period, the estimated shadow price and cost of nitrogen pollution abatement for Nebraska ranges from $0.91 to $2.21 per pound and from $300 to $729 million respectively.
