South armorican shear zone and continental fit before the opening of the bay of biscay ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude.
The relative position of continents prior to the opening of the Bay of Biscay can be correctly deduced from reconstruction of the Ibero-Armoncan belt only if the extent of the Late-Hercynian horizontal displacement along the south Armorican shear zone and perhaps also along the north Pyrenean fault can be determined. Thickness of lithosphere deduced from gravity edge effects across the Mendocino Fault ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude; Le Pichon, Xavier; Goslin, Jean.
THE evolution of a lithospheric plate, as it migrates away from the accreting boundary (mid-ocean ridge crest), is mostly a result of vertical cooling by conduction. As density is a function of temperature and pressure, the density structure should be a function of the age of the plate and, in order to preserve isostatic equilibrium, the seafloor should subside as the plate cools. Thus, the variation of heat flow, seafloor depth and the gravity field are different expressions of the same process, progressive cooling, occurring over the whole thickness of the plate. Sclater and Francheteau² have verified these properties through an analysis of the variation of heat flow and depth with the age of the plate. Their model assumed that the plate remains a...

Pyrenean orogeny and plate kinematics - art. no. B08104 ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude; Srivastava, Sp; Spakman, W.
The evolution of the Pyrenees, a mountain range between Iberia and Eurasia, has remained the subject of many debates between geologists and geophysicists for a long time. By combining the identification of seafloor spreading anomalies A33o to M0 in the Bay of Biscay with those in the North Atlantic, we have derived a position of a mean pole of rotation for the entire opening of the Bay of Biscay. Four hundred kilometers of shortening took place between the Iberian and Eurasian plates in the Pyrenean domain during the opening of the Bay of Biscay, from chrons M0 to A33o time (118 to 80 Ma). The deep seismic Etude Continentale et Oceanique par Reflexion et refraction Sismique (ECORS) profile shot across the Pyrenees and teleseismic data show the presence of...

Melting features along the Ryukyu slab tear, beneath the southwestern Okinawa Trough - art. no. L19607 ArchiMer
Lin, Jing-yi; Hsu, Sk; Sibuet, Jean-claude.
The present-day active volcanic front associated with the Ryukyu subduction zone extends from Japan to the Ilan plain (northern Taiwan) and is located within the Okinawa Trough, 80-100 km above the Ryukyu slab. An abnormal amount of arc volcanism, which consists of basalt, andesite and rhyolite occurs within the southwestern Okinawa Trough, above a slab tear of the Ryukyu subduction zone (CBVT). The power spectrum analysis of magnetic data shows the occurrence of a thin crust above the slab tear and a thick crust beneath this volcanic area. We suggest that an excess of H2O-rich fluid might occur at the slab tear and might increase the melt flux. Both are conveyed obliquely to the uppermost mantle and lower crust CBVT magmas. After interactions, basaltic...

Impact of lower plate structure on upper plate deformation at the NW Sumatran convergent margin from seafloor morphology ArchiMer

We present results from multibeam bathymetric data acquired during 2005 and 2006, in the region of maximum slip of the 26 Dec. 2004 earthquake (Mw 9.2). These data provide high-resolution images of seafloor morphology of the entire NW Sumatra forearc from the Sunda trench to the submarine volcanic arc just north of Sumatra. A slope gradient analysis of the combined dataset accurately highlights those portions of the seafloor shaped by active tectonic, depositional and/or erosional processes. The greatest slope gradients are located in the frontal 30 km of the forearc, at the toe of the accretionary wedge. This suggests that long-term deformation rates are highest here and that probably only minor amounts of slip are accommodated by other thrust faults...

Interprétation gravimétrique des zones de fractures ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude; Veyrat-peiney, Bernard.
A vertical distribution of temperatures in the lithosphere allows us to generate a simple gravimetric model which closely matches the observed free-air anomaly across oceanic fracture zones. Topographic highs associated with fracture zones are not compensated in the active transform part but become progressively compensated in the fossil part. At distances corresponding to a period of 10 to 20 m.y., compensation is complete. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Distribution of the East China Sea continental shelf basins and depths of magnetic sources ArchiMer
Lin, Jing-yi; Sibuet, Jean-claude; Hsu, S.
The acoustic basement map of the East China Sea, established by the Shanghai Offshore Petroleum Bureau with all available industry seismic data, shows the existence of a 30-km-wide, 10-km-deep basin, that we named the Ho Basin. The Ho Basin belongs to a series of elongated deep basins extending over 600 km east of the Taiwan-Sinzi Ridge and flanked to the East by a ridge named the Longwan Ridge in its northern part. This new system of basin and ridge was probably formed during middle Miocene, sometimes in between rifting episodes occurring in the Taipei Basin and Okinawa Trough. It. complements the already defined system of five belts of back-arc basins and associated arc volcanic ridges in the East China Sea, which are progressively younger from the...

Geodynamics of the South China Sea ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude; Yeh, Yi-ching; Lee, Chao-shing.
The beginning of seafloor spreading in the South China Sea (SCS) is now established from IODP drilling Leg 349 at 33 Ma. Chron 12 (32 Ma) is the oldest chron identified in the SCS. The nature of the crust of the northeastern part of the SCS located north of chron C12, where chrons 15 to 17 were previously identified, is not oceanic but thinned continental crust intruded by volcanic elongated features emplaced 17-22 Ma ago. Based on magnetic anomalies identifications, the end of the SCS spreading could be either 15.5, 20.5 Ma (Briais et al., 1993; Barckhausen et al., 2014) or something else. However, as post-spreading magmatic activity (~ 13-3.5 Ma) largely masks the spreading fabric in particular near the axis of the east sub-basin, published locations of...

Structure and rifting evolution of the northern Newfoundland Basin from Erable multichannel seismic reflection profiles across the southeastern margin of Flemish Cap ArchiMer
Welford, J. K.; Smith, J. A.; Hall, J.; Deemer, S.; Srivastava, S. P.; Sibuet, Jean-claude.
We present the results from processing and interpreting five lines from the 1992 Erable multichannel seismic reflection experiment extending from the southeastern margin of Flemish Cap into the northern Newfoundland Basin. These profiles reveal significant along strike variations in the rifting styles experienced by Flemish Cap. In the southwest, a 100-km-wide transition zone is identified between thinned continental crust and thin oceanic crust. Similar to the conjugate Galicia Bank and Iberian margins, this transition zone contains a section of deep basement adjacent to a series of shallower ridges and is interpreted as exhumed serpentinized mantle. Along strike towards the northeast, this transition zone pinches out completely within 100 km and is...

Lithologic and stratigraphic evidence from D.S.D.P. Site 398 (3910 m water depth, 1740 m total penetration) and regional seismic reflexion data are placed in the context of the early tectonic evolution of the North Atlantic ocean. The morphology of the western Iberian continental margin is the result of two main tensional episodes dated Permo-Lias and Upper Jurassic - Lower Cretaceous, during which the initial basins between Grand Banks and Iberia were created by subsidence and tilting of continental blocks. A limited oceanic opening had probably occurred in Jurassic time between these two tensional episodes. There was no relative motion during Lower Cretaceous between North America and Iberia. Geophysical constraints on the lithospheric structure in the northeastern South China Sea and its implications for the South China Sea geodynamics ArchiMer

An E-W oriented OBS2015-2 wide-angle refraction profile was shot in the northeastern South China Sea (SCS) between refraction profiles T1 and T2 in order to better understand the variability of the crustal composition and the role of specific tectonic features. P-wave velocity models established from forward and inversion modeling imaged a 12 to 15 km-thick thinned continental crust and a high velocity layer (HVL) in the lower crust which is interpreted as magmatic underplating. Profile OBS2015-2 cut across the Taiwan transfer zone (TTZ), which separates two consecutive rifted segments of different orientations in the northeastern SCS. The TTZ is a well-defined upper crustal feature characterized by a HVL with different thickness on both sides. We have...

Spatial variations in the frequency-magnitude distribution of earthquakes in the southwestern Okinawa Trough ArchiMer
Lin, Jing-yi; Sibuet, Jean-claude; Lee, Chao-shing; Hsu, Shu-kun; Klingelhoefer, Frauke.
The relations between the frequency of occurrence and the magnitude of earthquakes are established in the southern Okinawa Trough for 2823 relocated earthquakes recorded during a passive ocean bottom seismometer experiment. Three high b-values areas are identified: (1) for an area offshore of the Ilan Plain, south of the andesitic Kueishantao Island from a depth of 50 km to the surface, thereby confirming the subduction component of the island andesites; (2) for a body lying along the 123.3 degrees E meridian at depths ranging from 0 to 50 km that may reflect the high temperature inflow rising up from a slab tear; (3) for a third cylindrical body about 15 km in diameter beneath the Cross Backarc Volcanic Trail, at depths ranging from 0 to 15 km. Thinned continental crust intruded by volcanics beneath the northern Bay of Bengal ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Huang, Yuan-ping; Yeh, Yi-ching; Rangin, Claude; Lee, Chao-shing; Hsu, Shu-kun.
Since the early Cretaceous, the Bay of Bengal was formed during rifting between India and Antarctica and then by subsequent seafloor spreading. The nature of the crust underlying the Bay of Bengal is oceanic south of 15°N, but remains unknown (thinned continental crust, serpentinized mantle or oceanic crust) north of this limit. In order to better define the nature of the crust in the northern Bay of Bengal, three wide-angle reflection seismic and refraction profiles were acquired during the multichannel seismic reflection Bengal cruise. Nine ocean-bottom seismometers were deployed alternatively on three profiles. A seismic source consisting of 64 air guns with a volume of 6180 in3 was used simultaneously with a 10.05-km long streamer to acquire both...

Mouvements verticaux dans la région des bancs de Galice (Atlantique nord-est) d'après les résultats du Leg 47 B ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude; De Cahrpal, Olivier; Montadert, Lucien; Ryan, William B.f..
The morphology of the Western Iberian Continental margin is the result of two main tensional episodes dated Permian-Lias and Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous. Locally, at the level of D.S.D.P. site 398, this second episode is dated Barremian to Uppermost Aptian. A limited oceanic opening probably occurred in Middle Jurassic time between these two tensional episodes. During Lower Cretaceous, there was no relative movement between North America and Iberia. Seafloor spreading began again in Uppermost Aptian and has continued to the present day. The paleodepth for site 398 should have been around two kilometers in Lower Cretaceous after the last movements of subsidence and tilting of blocks associated with the so-called Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous tensional...

Okinawa trough backarc basin: Early tectonic and magmatic evolution ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude; Deffontaines, Benoît; Hsu, Shu-kun; Thareau, Nicolas; Le Formal, Jean-pierre; Liu, Char-shine; Act Party,.
The Okinawa Trough, lying between Japan and Taiwan, is a backarc basin formed by extension within the continental lithosphere behind the Ryukyu trench-are system. Stress directions associated with the two last extensional phases in the southwestern Okinawa Trough have been deduced from a comparison with analog modeling: the direction of extension is N150 degrees for the Pleistocene phase of extension (2-0.1 Ma) and N170 degrees for the late Pleistocene-Holocene phase of extension (0.1-0 Ma). The present-day Ryukyu volcanic are, a narrow continuous feature extending from Japan to Taiwan, is located on the eastern side of the Okinawa Trough, 80-100 km above the Wadati-Benioff zone, the minimum depth for emplacement of are magmatism. Geophysical study of the easternmost Walvis Ridge, South Atlantic: Deep structure ArchiMer
Goslin, J.; Sibuet, Jean-claude.
A seismic-refraction study of the sedimentary structure of the South West African continental shelf was carried out between lat 17°S and 24°S using expendable sonobuoys. Striking differences exist both in the topography and sedimentary structure between the shelf north and south of the Walvis Ridge. South of the ridge, as far as lat 23°S, the shelf consists of a prograded series, whereas north of the ridge, at least as far as lat 17°S, east-trending canyons cut the shelf sedimentary cover. The steep northem scarp of Walvis Ridge can be traced eastward under the sediment of the continental margin. The southern flank of the ridge is buried under a thicker sedimentary cover and could only be traced eastward to long. 10°E on seismic-reflection records. This...

Crustal structure across the post-spreading magmatic ridge of the East Sub-basin in the South China Sea: Tectonic significance ArchiMer
He, Enyuan; Zhao, Minghui; Qiu, Xuelin; Sibuet, Jean-claude; Wang, Jian; Zhang, Jiazheng.
The 140-km wide last phase of opening of the South China Sea (SCS) corresponds to a N145° direction of spreading with rift features identified on swath bathymetric data trending N055° (Sibuet et al., 2016). These N055° seafloor spreading features of the East Sub-basin are cut across by a post-spreading volcanic ridge oriented approximately E-W in its western part (Zhenbei-Huangyan seamounts chain). The knowledge of the deep crustal structure beneath this volcanic ridge is essential to elucidate not only the formation and tectonic evolution of the SCS, but also the mechanism of emplacement of the post-spreading magmatism. We use air-gun shots recorded by ocean bottom seismometers to image the deep crustal structure along the N-S oriented G8G0 seismic...

Structure across the northeastern margin of Flemish Cap, offshore Newfoundland from Erable multichannel seismic reflection profiles: evidence for a transtensional rifting environment ArchiMer
Welford, J. Kim; Hall, Jeremy; Sibuet, Jean-claude; Srivastava, Shiri P..
P>We present the results from processing and interpreting nine multichannel seismic reflection lines collected during the 1992 Erable experiment over the northeastern margin of Flemish Cap offshore Newfoundland. These lines, combined into five cross-sections, provide increased seismic coverage over this lightly probed section of the margin and reveal tectonically significant along-strike variations in the degree and compartmentalization of crustal thinning. Similar to the southeastern margins of Flemish Cap and the Grand Banks, a transitional zone of exhumed serpentinized mantle is interpreted between thinned continental and oceanic crust. The 25 km wide transitional zone bears similarities to the 120 km wide transitional zone interpreted as exhumed...

A schematic model of the evolution of the South Atlantic ocean is proposed to demonstrate the possibilities offered by the Deep Sea Drilling Project within the framework of Plate Tectonics to reconstruct a logical evolution of the history of the ocean basins and their paleoenvironment. The emphasis is put on the methodology available to reconstruct the ocean crust morphology and its sedimentary cover at all stages throughout the opening of the ocean.Paleobathymetric, deep paleo-water-circulation and paleo-sedimentary - facies maps at five different stages of the opening are presented and discussed. The last type of maps are in great part based on a new paleo - Carbonate Compensation Depth Curve for the South Atlantic which is tentatively proposed here....
