Biokartoffeln: Qualität mit jedem Anbauschritt Organic Eprints
Six, Roswitha; Dreyer, Wilfried; Fuchs, Alexander; Speiser, Bernhard; Dierauer, Hansueli; Berner, Alfred; Tamm, Lucius.

The egg parasitoid Telenomus sp. as a novel biocontrol agent to prevent the cabbage moth Organic Eprints
Barloggio, Guendalina; Tamm, Lucius; Oberhänsli, Thomas; Nagel, Peter; Luka, Henryk.
This work, which is part of a project called Biocomes (www.biocomes.eu), focuses on the control of the cabbage moth Mamestra brassicae (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) through mass release of the egg parasitoid Telenomus sp. (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). In the first year of the project we conducted different experiments to undercover aspects of the biology of this egg parasitoid that could help the creation of an efficient rearing system. Parallel we developed a species specific primer for the molecular species determination. Here we will present the most important results.

Einfluss von Armicarb (Kalium Bikarbonat) auf den Schorf und Regenfleckenkrankheit des Apfels Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Amsler, Thomas; Fuchs, Jacques G.; Schärer, Hans-Jakob; Refardt, Matthias.

Homeopathic Preparations to Control the Rosy Apple Aphid (Dysaphis plantaginea Pass.) Organic Eprints
Wyss, Eric; Tamm, Lucius; Siebenwirth, Joachim; Baumgartner, Stephan.
A laboratory model system with the rosy apple aphid (Dysaphis plantaginea Pass.) on apple seedlings was developed to study the effects of homeopathic preparations on this apple pest. The assessment included the substance Lycopodium clavatum and a nosode of the rosy apple aphid. Each preparation was applied on the substrate surface as aqueous solution of granules (6c, 15c, or 30c). Controls were aqueous solutions of placebo granules or pure water. In eight independent, randomized, and blinded experiments under standardized conditions in growth chambers, the development of aphids on treated and untreated apple seedlings was observed over 17 days, each. Six experiments were determined to assess the effects of a strict therapeutic treatment; two experiments...

Culturable Fungi of Stored ‘Golden Delicious’ Apple Fruits: A One-Season Comparison Study of Organic and Integrated Production Systems in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Granado, José; Thürig, Barbara; Kieffer, Edith; Petrini, Liliane; Fliessbach, Andreas; Tamm, Lucius; Weibel, Franco; Wyss, Gabriela S..
The effects of organic and integrated production systems on the culturable fungal microflora of stored apple fruits from five matched pairs of certified organic and integrated ‘Golden Delicious’ farms were studied at five representative production sites in Switzerland. Isolated fungi were identified morphologically. Colonization frequency (percentage of apples colonized), abundance (colony numbers), and diversity (taxon richness) were assessed for each orchard. The standard quality of the stored fruits was comparable for both organic and integrated apples and complied with national food hygiene standards. Yeasts (six taxa) and the yeast-like fungus Aureobasidium pullulans were the dominant epiphytes, filamentous fungi (21 taxa) the dominant endophytes. The...

Reducing copper use in the environment: the use of larixol and larixyl acetate to treat downymildew caused by Plasmopara viticola in viticulture Organic Eprints
Thuerig, Barbara; James, Emily E.; Schärer, Hans-Jakob; Langat, Moses K.; Mulholland, Dulcie A.; Treutwein, Jonas; Kleeberg, Ina; Ludwig, Mathias; Jayarajah, Praveen; Giovannini, Oscar; Markellou, Emilia; Tamm, Lucius.
BACKGROUND: Plant extracts might provide sustainable alternatives to copper fungicides, which are still widely used despite their unfavourable ecotoxicological profile. Larch bark extract and its constituents, larixyl acetate and larixol, have been shown to be effective against grapevine downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) under semi-controlled conditions. The aim of this study was to reduce the gap between innovation and the registration of amarketable product, namely to develop scalable extraction processes and to evaluate and optimise the performance of larch extracts under different conditions. RESULTS: Toxicologically and technically acceptable solvents like ethanol were used to extract the active compounds larixyl acetate and larixol from bark in...

Efficacy of Armicarb (potassium bicarbonate) against scab and sooty blotch on apples Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Amsler, Thomas; Schärer, Hansjakob; Refardt, Matthias.
A novel formulation of potassium bicarbonate (Armicarb) was evaluated in 2004 and 2005 as agent against apple scab (3 field trials) and sooty blotch (2 field trials). Armicarb controlled scab equally well as the reference treatments sulphur and copper. Armicarb showed also excellent activity against sooty blotch. However, potential side-effects such as lenticell spot development need further investigation. At present, potassium bicarbonate is considered by the Swiss registration authorities as non-toxic to humans and in consequence, no residue levels have been specified. Armicarb has very interesting properties as a plant protection agent and its composition and risk profile are expected to fulfil the IFOAM standards for acceptance of novel plant...

Contributions of EU-project REPCO to apple scab control Organic Eprints
Köhl, Jürgen; Heijne, Bart; Hockenhull, John; Pedersen, Hanne Lindhard; Trapman, Marc; Eiben, Ute; Tamm, Lucius.
The objective of REPCO is to contribute to the replacement of copper fungicides in organic agriculture by new measures for control of downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) in grapevine and scab (Venturia inaequalis) in apple. Both major European organic crops strongly depend on copper fungicides. Permitted amounts will be reduced stepwise during the following years (Council Regulation (EEC) 2092/91, Annex II) to avoid environmental risks. In European countries where copper fungicides are already out of use, production of organic apples suffers severe economical problems because of insufficient scab control. Potentiators of resistance, organically based fungicides and biocontrol agents are screened and evaluated in apple. Effects of crop management...

An aqueous extract of the dry mycelium of Penicillium chrysogenum induces resistance in several crops under controlled and field conditions Organic Eprints
Thürig, Barbara; Binder, Andres; Boller, Thomas; Guyer, Urs; Jiménez, Sonia; Rentsch, Christina; Tamm, Lucius.
We have examined the effect of Pen, an aqueous extract of the dry mycelium of Penicillium chrysogenum, on plant–pathogen interactions. Pen controlled a broad range of pathogens on several crop plants under greenhouse and field conditions. Pen protected grapevine from downy and powdery mildew (caused by Plasmopara viticola and Uncinula necator), tomato from early blight (caused by Phytophthora infestans), onion from downy mildew (Peronospora destructor) and apple trees from apple scab (caused by Venturia inaequalis) to a similar extent as fungicides such as copper and sulphur or well-known inducers such as benzothiadiazole or b-aminobutyric acid. Pen had no major direct fungicidal effect and is thus supposed to protect plants by activating their defense...
