| In Flanders glasshouse vegetables and ornamental plants are typically produced at family businesses. At this type of businesses the objectives and long-term firm developments are influenced by the so called ‘family-firm life cycle’. In many cases the firm shows a life cycle that corresponds with the life cycle of the entrepreneur. The objective of the paper is to test the hypothesis that the ‘family-firm life cycle’ will have an impact on the personal and business characteristics, objectives and the quality of the management processes involved in sustainable glasshouse horticulture. | Specialising in wool production could be a good opportunity for farmers in the former Transkei to upgrade to fully commercial and economic viable enterprises. This paper investigates the efficiency of the current practices of wool producers in three villages. Two of those villages are beneficiaries of the LandCare project of the National Department of Agriculture, and receive help on technical matters and marketing. The analysis shows that in the two villages beneficiary of the Land Care project the technical, allocative and economic efficiency of the wool production is higher than in the third village. In the latter, the technical efficiency of some of the farms is still good, but the difference is made in the marketing of the wool. |

| In 2005, 30% of the Flemish farms faced a manure excess, while at aggregated level still 9.7% of the emission rights were unused. This means that, despite the various possibilities, Flemish farmers do not succeed in an effective exchange of manure between farms. In current paper is shown how inorganic fertilizer use influences the use and exchange of organic nitrogen. Because of the mutual interdependency between organic and inorganic nitrogen emission rights (or quota), inorganic nitrogen use limits the emission rights for organic nitrogen. Utilisation of these emission rights are analysed as a trade-offs choice between plant productivity (use of inorganic nitrogen) and manure disposal, as the major abatement alternative of manure production. | In this paper we anlyse the meaning of multifunctionality at farm level. After defining the concept, a number of examples are given to illustrate problems in delivery of non-commodity outputs. Based on a general micro-economic model, it is shown that farmers' behavior will depend on personal characteristics as well as on relative prices. Next, Instruments to give incentives to farmers to engage in the delivery of non-commodity outputs are discussed as well as the possibility of collective action. The paper ends with some conclusions and recommendations for further research and discussion. |
