Identifizierung von Bio-Milchviehbetriebstypen sowie deren Betriebs-, Herden- und Managementcharakteristika Organic Eprints
Ivemeyer, Silvia; Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Simantke, Christel; Winckler, Christoph; Knierim, Ute.
Organic dairy milk production is a growing sector in Germany. The sector varies between regions and individual farms due to topographical and structural differences, but very little statistical information is available in Germany about this variation. The aim of this study was to identify typical major farm types (MFT) of German organic dairy farms and to describe their farm, herd and management characteristics. Based on data from 204 organic dairy farms from previous studies with representative samples, four MFT were identified by cluster analysis and expert opinions. Cluster criteria were herd size, milk yield, region and housing system. 10-11 farms per MFT, in total 41 farms were interviewed with respect to their management by phone or during a farm...

Full case study report: Bio-Distretto Cliento -Italy Organic Eprints
Pugliese, Patrizia; Antonelli, Annarita.
The Italian long‐standing tradition and experience with industrial and agro‐industrial districts and the 2001 national Agricultural Act including a specific article on “rural and quality agro‐food districts” (and following regulations), have undoubtedly contributed to inspire the more recent phenomenon of “bio‐distretti” initiatives. Bio‐distretti are spreading from south to north across the country, gathering the interest of private and public actors around a context‐specific project of local development. This is essentially based on the combination of the “district culture and tradition” with a precise focus on organic agriculture and its significant potential for sustainable territorial development (Pugliese and Antonelli 2015). Bio‐distretto Cilento,...

School food provision in Germany. A first analysis of the role of organic produce Organic Eprints
Strassner, Carola; Nölting, Benjamin; Reimann, Silke.
School meal provision in Germany is changing from a type of supplementary food provision towards full warm school meals. Reasons for this transition are longer school days, the expansion of the all-day school model, and an increasing interest in a healthy nutrition for children and young people. However, the organisation of school meal systems is patchy and confusing; there is an enormous range of services in various qualities. This paper describes the current situation and explores chances for sustainable school meal systems emerging out of this change. The focus is on the use of organic food in school meals.

Viehloser Bio-Ackerbau: Resultate aus zwölf Beobachtungsjahren des Versuchsbetriebs Mapraz Organic Eprints
Taramarcaz, Josy; Clerc, Maurice.

Farm Auditing for Sustainability Organic Eprints
Measures, Mark.
Policy makers have now established sustainability as the new aim for UK farming. The development of the Farm Audit for Sustainability involved identifying the objectives of sustainable farming, based on the Principles of organic farming as set out by the International Federation of Organic Farming Movements (IFOAM) and establishment of indicators to assess the effectiveness of individual farms in meeting these objectives. On-farm use of the Farm Audit demonstrated that the tool was able to provide a comprehensive assessment of sustainability of the farming system and that it is an information and advisory tool which is potentially useful in benchmarking and development of the farming operation.

Are the motives of recent adopters in line with the conventionalisation hypothesis? Organic Eprints
Best, Henning.
To contribute to the discussion on the con-ventionalisation hypothesis, empirical data on mo-tives for the conversion to organic farming by recent adopters is analysed. The results indicate that the preferences and attitudes of the new organic farmers contradict the conventionalisation scenario: (1) Com-pared to conventional farmers, the new adopters have lower preferences for high yields, market prices and easy control of weed and pests, but higher prefer-ences for receiving subsidies and not using chemicals. (2) Environmental concern has an effect on the odds of an adoption of organic farming. Thus, new organic farmers significantly differ in their preferences and attitudes from conventional farmers – they hold a less productivist, relatively alternative...

Research needs for development of organic agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa Organic Eprints
Ssekyewa, Charles; George, Francisca; Müller, Adrian.
World population is about 7 billion in 2010 and is expected to grow much more. The expected growth is highest in parts of the world that are vulnerable to hunger and adverse climatic conditions, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This then translates into the likely need for more food in these regions. The situation is exacerbated by the lack of appropriate farming technologies and the many constraints limiting production and productivity of major commodities. Apart from hunger, unless the situation is addressed through a holistic approach to research, there is a very real danger that environmental degradation will escalate. UNEP (2009) found that the recent food crisis could even exacerbate in the next decade if there are no explicit answers to...

Wurm-Befall bei Jungrindern unter trockenen Weidebedingungen Organic Eprints
Hertzberg, Hubertus; Maurer, Veronika; Heckendorn, Felix; Wanner, Anne; Gutzwiller, Andreas; Mosimann, Eric.

Feeding sainfoin to goats – influence on milk and cheese quality and yield Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Schwery, Moritz; Volken, Herbert; Maurer, Veronika; Simonnet, Xavier.
Although the administration of sainfoin is associated with anthelmintic effects, information on the consequences of feeding this legume on product quality is scarce. In the present study we looked at milk quality and yield of goats fed either sainfoin or a non-tanniferous control forage. Twelve lactating goats of the alpine breed were used for the study. They received grass/clover hay for a period of 15 days (grass clover feeding period, GCFP). Then the feed was switched to sainfoin hay (approx. 90 % of daily intake) for another 15 days (sainfoin feeding period, SFP). Both feeds were supplemented with concentrates in order to guarantee isoproteic and isoenergetic feeding throughout the trial. Milk yield and quality (fat, protein, energy and urea) were...

Ökonomische Bewertung der Integration temporärer Naturschutzmaßnahmen im Ökologischen Landbau - Beispiel Blühstreifen - Organic Eprints
Behrens, Martina; Moeller, Prof. Dr. Detlef; Haase, Dr. Thorsten; Hess, Prof. Dr. Juergen.
At the Hessian state domain Frankenhausen, an organic farm with comparatively high yield potential, the integration of nature conservation measures is tested. Economic investigations aim to identify costs and changes of performance due to the adaptation of production processes to nature conservation targets. The main focus is on temporary measures that, like field-flower strips, potentially promote biodiversity on arable land. Initial calculations show the costs that must be taken into account for wildflower strips with autochthonous species on arable land. The analysis particularly considers the complex intra-farm integration of the conservation measures as a special characteristic of organic agriculture systems.

Agent Orange Day: Remediating chemical trespass Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Agent Orange Day, 10th August, is a day for us to remember the raison d'être of the organics movement. It was on this day, 51 years ago, that the USA embarked on the most audacious and extensive program of chemical warfare that the world has witnessed. Continuously, over a decade (1961-1971), vast swathes of Vietnam's forests, waterways, and croplands were drenched and re-drenched in high dosage agricultural herbicides, reportedly up to 50 times the recommended dosages. The US military intention was to denude the land of forests and crops, and, on these crude terms, it was a success. Estimates put the area of Vietnam affected at three million hectares (7.4 million acres). The objective was to deny cover and crops to ‘the enemy’. The Viet Cong were fighting...

Environmental targets and shadow prices of bad outputs in organic and conventional farming Organic Eprints
Huhtala, Anni; Marklund, Per-Olov.
The shadow prices can be used as indicators of the costs of environmental regulation imposed as reflected in alternative farming technologies adopted. We illustrate our analytical findings with implications of the Finnish water protection policy measures on conventional and organic livestock farms over the period 1994-2002. Generally, the representative organic farm is found to be more technically efficient relative to its own technology than is the conventional representative farm. However, there is no statistical indication of a difference between these two particular representative farms in valuing the costs of undesirable output (manure) at the margin.

The Spade test - Visual soil assessment in the field Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas; Fliessbach, Andreas; Hasinger, Gerhard.
This video explains how to take out a handy soil profile and how to interpret it by using the spade test. The video is addressed to farmers, advisors and scientist. After the introductory part of determining the objectives of the test and of comparing it with other methods, the user gets a detailed presentation on how to extract, prepare and judge a sample. This is done by judging its colour and odour characteristics. Furthermore, it is explained how the stratification, structure and texture of a sample can be assessed by using the finger test, the drop test and observations. This helps evaluate your findings. In the short term, you can find out whether your field is ready for tillage or whether it is too wet. In the long term, it helps you get to know...

"Economic results achieved by a selected group of organic farms in Poland in 2004" Organic Eprints
Nachtman, Grażyna; Żekało, Marcin.
Abstract: Organic farming is becoming more and more popular among Polish farmers. In the year of the accession of Poland to the European Union, the number of certified organic farms amounted to 1683. By the end of 2005, which is after the first year of Poland’s membership in the EU, the number of farms practicing exclusively organic farming or taking up that course of production amounted to more than 7000. On the basis of agricultural accountancy from 2004, an economic and production evaluation of 110 organic farms included in the Polish FADN sample was carried out. The organic farms were classified into 5 classes of economic size. 92% of them were of economic size below 16 ESU. The study contains economic and production results achieved by a group of...
