Mode of infection and spread of <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> in turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> larvae after oral challenge through life feed OMA
Grisez, L.; Chair, M.; Sorgeloos, P.; Ollevier, F.P..
The infection route of the marine fish pathogen <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> was studied after oral challenge of the juvenile turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L. through a life feed. <i>Artemia</i> nauplii were incubated in a suspension of <i>V. anguillarum</i> cells, and subsequently fed twice to the fish. All challenged fish died within 4d after the first challenge, while no mortality occurred in the non-challenged controls. The results of an immunohistochemical examination of the sectioned fish samples clearly demonstrated that <i>V. anguillarum</i> cells were ingested by the <i>Artemia</i> and that the latter were ingested by the fish. Bacteria were released from the...

Aspects of the life-cycle of <i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (Nematoda; Monhysteridae) OMA
Vranken, G.; Thielemans, L.K.; Heip, C.H.R.; Vandycke, M..
<i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (De Coninck,1943) was collected from the sediment of the Sluice-dock, a euhaline-polyhaline lagoon near the harbour of Ostend (Belgium). The species was cultivated in large numbers on a bacto-agar medium with bacterial growth. Embryonic growth was studied at 30 °C and 30 promille S. Maximum embryonic length-growth occurs at the vermiform stage. Post-embryonic length-growth, studied at 25 °C and 30 promille S, is a linear function of time and may be expressed as l = 160.46 + 29.55(t-to), where to = time at the beginning of development; t and l = time (d) and length (µm). At 25 °C and 30 promille S, average embryonic development time and generation time are 4 and 9 d...

Essai de bilan annuel du transfer de l'azote dans le bassin de chasse d'Ostende: 1. Utilisation de l'azote par le phytoplankton et le phytobenthos OMA
Podamo, J..
As nutrients are withdrawn from the environment in the proportions required for the growth of primary producers, the C/N ratio known from the literature provides a stoechiometric basis for evaluating the uptake of nitrogen resulting from phytoplankton and phytobenthos activity. This activity has been measured respectively by 14CO2 incorporation and O2 production in <i>in situ</i> and<i> in vitro</i> experiments. The production of the phytoplankton community for the period considered (6 months) amounts to 112 g C/m². That of phytobenthos might well be one third of this amount (37 g C/m²). Therefore, nitrogen uptake would have been 14 g and 4 g C/m². As the yearly...

Long-term evolution of the meiofauna at a sandy station in lake Grevelingen, the Netherlands OMA
Willems, K.A.; Sharma, Y.; Heip, C.H.R.; Sandee, A.J.J..
Data on density, diversity and species number of harpacticoids and nematodes from a 3 m deep station in Lake Grevelingen are reported over the period 1975-1980. Vertical distribution of both copepod and nematodes densities are added. Over the 6 years period 95 species of nematodes and 26 species of harpacticoids have been identified. Neither diversity nor species number of harpacticoids changed significantly over the period. Nematode diversity and species number showed considerable changes, and especially the species composition evolved drastically over the years. The changes in feeding types among nematodes are discussed. Densities of both copepods and nematodes changed substantially over the 6 years period. Concurrent with a significant rise of the redox...

Effect of organic complexation on the behaviour of dissolved Cd, Cu and Zn in the Scheldt estuary OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Goeyens, L.; Monteny, F.; Elskens, I..
Samples from the Scheldt estuary have been assayed for dissolved Cd, Cu and Zn using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, either as total (after UV irradiation) or labile concentrations. Under these experimental conditions, labile concentrations ranged between 51-65% of total Cu, 16-66% of total Zn and 53-91 % of total Cd. The metal-organic interactions were assessed by evaluating (a) the distribution coefficient Kd for the distribution of the metals between the liquid phase (complexation) and their binding to particulate matter, and (b) the competitive effect exerted by inorganic complexing ligands using a multi-element interaction model. The proportion of organically bound metals (strong and labile) was estimated, in...

North Sea spawning grounds of the sole (<i>Solea solea</i>) located from the 1984 Belgian plankton survey OMA
Borremans, C..
During spring 1984 large ichthyoplankton surveys were performed to determine the spawning period and the spawning places of the sole in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. In March and April most eggs were found close to the Belgian coast and the coast of Brittany, which agrees with results of previous plankton surveys. In the second of the surveys, however, high densities were also found at stations about 50 km from the coast -in the open sea. An attempt is made to explain whether these early eggs were laid in the locality, contrary to what is normally accepted, or drifted there from the Belgian or the English coast.

Roles and potentials of <i>Artemia</i> in coastal saltworks OMA
Sorgeloos, P.; Tackaert, W..
The recent developments in aquaculture production of fish and shrimp have resulted in increased demands for <i>Artemia</i> cysts and biomass as valuable sources of life food. Solar salt works are suitable biotopes for the integrated exploitation of salt, <i>Artemia</i> and eventually fish or shrimp. <i>Artemia</i> may be present as a natural resource in local saltworks; however in some situations characteristics of the endemic strain might justify the introduction of another <i>Artemia</i> species to increase productivity.

Allocation of the Mantridae Leigh-Sharpe to the Cyclopoida (Crustacea: Copepoda) with notes on <i>Nearchinotodelphys</i> Ummerkutty OMA
Huys, R..
<i>Mantra speciosa</i> Leigh-Sharpe, 1934 (ex Poecilostomatoida) collected during the Siboga Expedition is redescribed on the basis of the holotype female. The 15-segmented antennule and the gnathostomous nature of the mouthparts exclude the Mantridae from the Poecilostomatoida and point to a relationship with the tunicate-infesting families Ascidicolidae, Notodelphyidae and Archinotodelphyidae (Cyclopoida). <i>Nearchinotodelphys indicus</i> Ummerkutty, 1960 (ex Archinotodelphyidae) is transferred to the Mantridae. It is suggested that the bivalve-inhabiting mantrids have diverged from the ascidicolous lineage leading to the Notodelphyidae and Ascidicolidae.

Trend analysis of the published concentrations of heavy metals in aerosols above the North Sea and the English Channel for the period 1971-1994 OMA
Hoornaert, S.; Treiger, B.; Van Grieken, R.; Laane, R.W.P.M..
A literature review is given of atmospheric trace metal concentrations in aerosols above the North Sea and the English Channel over the period 1971-1994. Literature data have been gathered and intercompared to look for possible trends in the reported concentrations. Six trace metals are considered: Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, and Cr. A distinction is made between measurements in different regions of the North Sea, and between coastal and marine areas. The majority of the data deals with the Southern Bight, providing the most reliable trends. Strong decreasing trends are observed for the Pb and Zn concentrations above the North Sea during the years 1971-1994. For Cd, Cu, Ni, and Cr, much less data are available in the literature. Despite this, also for Cd and Cu a...

Carbon flows through meiobenthic nematodes in the Westerschelde Estuary OMA
Li, J.; Vincx, M.; Herman, P.M.J..
A time dynamic model was used to estimate carbon flows through nematodes in an intertidal benthic ecosystem in the Westerschelde Estuary, The Netherlands. The model calibrated the nematode biomass observed from March 1991 to February 1992. The forcing functions of the model included meiobenthos biomass, macrobenthos biomass, bacterial density, chlorophyll-a concentration, and other abiotic data such as temperature and day length. We estimate that the nematode population had a low level of standing stock 249 mg C m(-2), but a high level of carbon flow. It consumed 98 mg C m(-2) d(-1) and produced 22 mg C m(-2) d(-1). Defecation was 73 mg C m(-2) d(-1). Losses in respiration, excretion and natural death were only 3 mg C m(-2) d(-1). The annual P/B was 32 for...

Wind wave modelling in shallow water: with application to the southern North Sea OMA
Luo, W..
Increased marine activities, particularly in areas of off-shore exploitation and coastal development, have created an urgent need for improved knowledge of wave conditions in the shallow near-shore regions. In this work, objectives have been made to investigate the effects of bottom friction, depth-induced wave breaking, and tidal motions on the wave evolution in shallow water, and to apply the wave model (WAM Cycle 4) to the Belgian coastal waters. Firstly, the effects of different bottom friction formulations on the energy balance equation were quantitatively investigated for fetch-limited shallow water conditions. It was found that the formulation of the bottom friction dissipation has a quite significant effect on the energy balance at shallower water...

Un nouveau genre de Peyssonneliaceae, <i>Metapeyssonnelia</i> (Rhodophyta) OMA
Boudouresque, C.F.; Coppejans, E.; Marcot, J..
<i>Metapeyssonnelia</i>, a new genus of the Peyssonneliaceae (Rhodophyta), is described. This encrusting orbicular alga is completely calcified by aragonite. Small unicellular rhizoids are present. The centre of the thallus shows a <i>Peyssonnelia</i>-like structure that metamorphes towards the margins of older thalli: in these metamorphosed parts, an inferior perithallus is generated downwards. Each hypothallic cell gives rise to only one coxal cell, even in the metamorphosed parts: this characteristic distinguishes the structure of <i>Metapeyssonnelia</i> from that of <i>Polystrata</i>. The type species is <i>M. feldmannii</i> nov. sp., collected at Port-Cros island (Mediterranean, France).

The influence of temperature and salinity on the sensitivity of <i>Artemia</i> nauplii to chemical compounds OMA
Persoone, G.; Van Steertegem, M..
The toxicity of chemicals to aquatic organisms is mostly determined in a set of experimental conditions which are close to optimal for the test species. Because in nature organisms have to cope with fluctuating environmental conditions which can range during the course of the year from optimal to suboptimal, up to the limits of the tolerance range, the conditions under which routine bioassays are normally performed do, however, not reflect the large range of situations occurring in the field. Considering the scarcity of information on the effect of fluctuating environmental conditions on the sensitivity of test species to toxicants, a comparative laboratory study has been undertaken to determine the combined influence of environmental variables on the...

Stygofauna of the Canary Islands: 11. <i>Boxshallia bulbantennulata</i> gen. et spec. nov. (Copepoda: Misophrioida) from an anchihaline lava pool on Lanzarote, Canary Islands OMA
Huys, R..
A new genus and species of misophrioid copepod is described from an anchihaline lava pool on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Boxshallia bulbantennulata gen. et spec. nov. lacks any trace of a carapace, possesses a genital double somite, and can be distinguished from other misophrioids by the presence of a bulb-shaped process on the first antennular segment, the loss of the inner coxal spine in leg 1 and the presence of 3 setae on the mandibular basis. The new genus also exhibits many plesiomorphic features such as the 27-segmented antenulla and the biramous leg 5 with a 2-segmented protopod and a well developed intercoxal sclerite in the female. On the basis of urosome segmentation and gonopore location, the holotype of...
