How fast can the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) larvae cross the Atlantic Ocean? ArchiMer
Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Blanke, Bruno; Treguier, Anne-marie; Grima, Nicolas; Rivot, Etienne; Vermard, Youen; Greiner, Eric; Le Pape, Olivier.
The migration duration of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) larvae (leptocephali) from the spawning areas in the Sargasso Sea to the European continental shelf remains highly controversial, with estimates varying from 6 months to more than 2 yr. We estimated the fastest migration period and the shortest distance travelled by eel larvae by simulating Lagrangian particles released in the Sargasso Sea and by simulating a range of larval behaviours (fixed-depth drift, vertical diurnal migration and active-depth selection to maximize current velocity). This enabled us to compute (i) a passive drift speed, and (ii) a hypothetic swimming speed needed for European eel larvae to cross the Atlantic in 6 months (i.e., the migration duration estimated from otolith...

Eastern Mediterranean Sea circulation inferred from the conditions of S1 sapropel deposition ArchiMer
Tachikawa, K.; Vidal, L.; Cornuault, M.; Garcia, M.; Pothin, A.; Sonzogni, C.; Bard, E.; Menot, G.; Revel, M..
Holocene eastern Mediterranean Sea sediments contain an organic-rich sapropel S1 layer that was formed in oxygen-depleted waters. The spatial distribution of this layer revealed that during S1 deposition, deep waters were anoxic below a depth of 1800 m. However, whether this boundary permanently existed from the early to the mid-Holocene has not been examined yet. To answer this question, a multi-proxy approach was applied to a core retrieved close to the 1800 m boundary (at 1780 m). We measured the bulk sediment elemental composition, the stable isotopic composition of the planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides ruber and the abundance of benthic foraminifera since the last deglaciation. The result indicates that authigenic U and Mo accumulation began...

Interprétation des stries valvaires pour l'évaluation de la croissance de Ruditapes decussatus L. ArchiMer
Garcia, F.
Counting annual rings on shells, under favourable climatological conditions, usually permits determination of the age of many bivalves. But the application of this method becomes impossible when meteorological conditions are highly variable, as in the Bay of Fos. Annual winter rings are, in fact, often merged with other rings induced by important physiological processes like gametogenesis. When, therefore, annual rings and pseudoannual rings occur, it is impossible to distinguish between them. SEM offers a good solution to this problem, through the establishment of a scheme of interpretation. This method would also be suitable to identify the two main types of rings that could be confused in Ruditapes decussatus L. of the Bay of Fos, using optic microscopy...

Coherent heat patterns revealed by unsupervised classification of Argo temperature profiles in the North Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Maze, Guillaume; Mercier, Herle; Fablet, Ronan; Tandeo, Pierre; Radcenco, Manuel Lopez; Lenca, Philippe; Feucher, Charlene; Le Goff, Clement.
A quantitative understanding of the integrated ocean heat content depends on our ability to determine how heat is distributed in the ocean and what are the associated coherent patterns. This study demonstrates how this can be achieved using unsupervised classification of Argo temperature profiles. The classification method used is a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) that decomposes the Probability Density Function of a dataset into a weighted sum of Gaussian modes. It is determined that the North Atlantic Argo dataset of temperature profiles con- tains 8 groups of vertically coherent heat patterns, or classes. Each of the temperature profile classes reveals unique and physically coherent heat distributions along the vertical axis. A key result of this study is...

Long-term exposure to near-future ocean acidification does not affect the expression of neurogenesis- and synaptic transmission-related genes in the olfactory bulb of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Mazurais, David; Servili, Arianna; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Gislard, Sebastien; Madec, Lauriane; Zambonino-infante, Jose-luis.
The decrease in ocean pH that results from the increased concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) is likely to influence many physiological functions in organisms. It has been shown in different fish species that ocean acidification (OA) mainly affects sensory systems, including olfaction. Impairment of olfactory function may be due to a dysfunction of the GABAergic system and to an alteration of neuronal plasticity in the whole brain and particularly in olfactory bulbs. Recent studies revealed that OA-driven effects on sensory systems are partly mediated by the regulation of the expression of genes involved in neurotransmission and neuronal development. However, these studies were performed in fish exposed to acidified waters for short periods, of...

La réplication de l'ADN chez l'euryarchaea Pyrococcus Abyssi : mise en place et dynamique du complexe ArchiMer
Rouillon, Christophe.
DNA replication occurs through a large protein complex assembly called replisome. An understanding of its structure and function requires its in vitro reassembly from individual subunits. In all living organisms, the elongation of a primed DNA template by DNA polymerase, with high processivity, requires the accessory protein DNA sliding clamp (PCNA) that is loaded onto DNA by the clamp loader (RF-C). Generally, the archaeal proteins involved in DNA replication are more similar to those of the higher organisms (Eukarya) rather than to those from Bacteria. This study have focussed on the PCNA loading mechanism and on the DNA synthesis in the hyperthermophilic Euryarchaea Pyrococcus abyssi. To investigate the importance of some protein-protein and...

Suivi de la reproduction de l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas dans la partie nord du bassin charentais ArchiMer
Arnaud, Christophe; Fillon, Alain.
The Charente-Maritime coast has, on its northern part, between the Charente estuary and the northern boundary of the department (Isle of Ré included), many sites which interest the oyster culture industry, especially as far as juvenile collection is concerned. The well-known centre of Fouras is one of them. To help the professionals, and for its own purposes, the Ifremer studies the periods of emission of cupped oyster larvae in order to let the oyster farmers know about the best collection times. Contractualized for the first time in 1996 between the SRC FIE-Centre Ouest and the Ifremer, this work has been carried out again in 1997 by the DEL coastal laboratory of La Rochelle, following the renewal of this contract. This report presents the different...

North Pacific Gyre Oscillation links ocean climate and ecosystem change ArchiMer
Di Lorenzo, E.; Schneider, N.; Cobb, K. M.; Franks, P. J. S.; Chhak, K.; Miller, A. J.; Mcwilliams, J. C.; Bograd, S. J.; Arango, H.; Curchitser, E.; Powell, T. M.; Riviere, Pascal.
Decadal fluctuations in salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll, a variety of zooplankton taxa, and fish stocks in the Northeast Pacific are often poorly correlated with the most widely-used index of large- scale climate variability in the region - the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). We define a new pattern of climate change, the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO) and show that its variability is significantly correlated with previously unexplained fluctuations of salinity, nutrients and chlorophyll. Fluctuations in the NPGO are driven by regional and basin-scale variations in wind-driven upwelling and horizontal advection - the fundamental processes controlling salinity and nutrient concentrations. Nutrient fluctuations drive concomitant changes in...

Seasonal cycle and interannual variability of rainfall at hydrological scales. The West African monsoon in a Sudanese climate ArchiMer
Le Lay, Matthieu; Galle, Sylvie.
West African rainfall is characterized by a strong variability, both at decadal and interannual scales. In order to quantify the hydrological impacts of such a variability, analysis of rainfall patterns at fine scales is highly essential. This diagnostic study aims to characterize the Sudanese rainfall regime at hydrological scales, using a raingauge data set collected on the upper Oueme River catchment (Benin) between 1950 and 2002. A long-term drought is observed during the 1970s and 1980s, as in the Sahel. However, the interannual variability remains significant in the Sudanese region. The study of the seasonal cycle, based on the distinction between the oceanic and continental monsoon regimes, shows that the majority of rainfall changes occur in the...

Coring induced sediment fabrics at IODP Expedition 347 Sites M0061 and M0062 identified by anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS): criteria for accepting palaeomagnetic data ArchiMer
Snowball, I; Almqvist, B; Lougheed, B C; Wiers, S; Obrochta, S; Herrero-bervera, E.
Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility data obtained from discrete sub-samples recovered from two Integrated Ocean Drilling Program sites (Expedition 347 sites M0061 and M0062 in the Baltic Sea) by an Advanced Piston Corer are compared to results obtained on sub-samples recovered by replicate 6 m long Kullenberg piston cores. Characteristic natural remanence directions were obtained from the total of 1097 sub-samples using principal component analyses. The three principal anisotropy axes of sub-samples taken from Advanced Piston Core liners align to the sub-sample axes, with the maximum axis (K1) parallel to the split core surfaces, possibly caused by outwards relaxation of the core-liners after splitting. A second anomalous anisotropy fabric is...

Expression, tissue localization and synergy of antimicrobial peptides and proteins in the immune response of the oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Schmitt, Paulina; De Lorgeril, Julien; Gueguen, Yannick; Destoumieux-garzon, Delphine; Bachere, Evelyne.
Diverse families of antimicrobial peptides and proteins have been described in oysters. We investigated here how antimicrobials are involved in the immune response against a pathogenic strain of Vibrio splendidus. Oyster antimicrobials were shown to display a wide variety of expression profiles in hemocyte populations and tissues. Oyster defensins are constitutively expressed in specific tissues such as mantle (Cg-Defm) or hemocytes (Cg-Defhs), while Cg-BPI is inducible and Cg-Prp appears down-regulated in hemocytes upon infection. The migratory behavior of hemocytes that express the different antimicrobials was found to be involved in the oyster response to a pathogenic Vibrio infection. Indeed, it contributes to colocalize several antimicrobials that...

A traditional activity on the Breton coast, spider crab fishing has grown more important over the past few years, not due to an increase of the number of catches but to a significant decrease in the number of lobsters and crayfishes brought to the market, following the closing of some fishing areas (Anglo-Norman Isles, Ireland, England) and the exhaustion of others.

Structure of the upper water column in the northwest North Atlantic: Modern versus last glacial maximum conditions ArchiMer
De Vernal, A; Hillaire-marcel, C; Peltier, Wr; Weaver, Aj.
During the Last Glacial Maximum, the northwestern North Atlantic constituted a major conduit for Labrador and Greenland ice sheet meltwaters. Vertical density gradients in its upper water masses have been reconstructed by combining information from transfer functions based on dinocysts and from oxygen isotope measurements (delta(18)O) in planktonic foraminifera. Transfer functions yield temperature and salinity and thus potential density (sigma(theta)) for the warmest (August) and coldest (February) months in the photic zone. The delta(18)O values in different size fractions of epipelagic (Globigerina bulloides) and mesopelagic (Neogloboquadrina pachyderma left-coiled (Np1)) foraminifera allow us to assess sigma(theta) gradients through the pycnocline...
