Notes on some land and freshwater Mollusca from Auvergne, France Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
From August 16 till September 1, 1955, Dr. H. C. Blöte, Mr. J. J. Barkman, and the present author were the leaders of an excursion of students in biology of the University at Leiden to Central France. For some two weeks the party was hospitably lodged in the "Station Biologique" in the village Besse-en-Chandesse (département Puy de Dôme), 30 km S.S.W. of Clermont-Ferrand. Thanks to the generosity of Prof. R. Hovasse and Dr. L. Olivier, we could stay in this biological institute, which belongs to the University at Clermont-Ferrand. During the excursion the author paid special attention to the collecting of land and freshwater Mollusca. The very dry and hot weather during our stay was one of the main difficulties in carrying the project into execution;...

A Late Cretaceous gastropod homing scar (possibly ichnogenus Lacrimichnus) from southern Limburg, The Netherlands Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M..
An isolated gastropod homing scar, etched into an arcoscalpelline (cirripede) scutum, is recorded from the upper Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation, upper Maastrichtian) at the ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group quarry. This trace may be assignable to the ichnogenus Lacrimichnus Santos, Mayoral & Muñiz, that comprises etching scars produced by Neogene calyptraeid and/or capulid gastropods and ostreid bivalves from southern Spain and Portugal. However, it differs from both ichnospecies currently contained in that ichnogenus, L. bonarensis and L. cacelensis, in showing a relatively deep depression around the rim, irregularly distributed pit- and slit-like depressions, and an irregularly subcircular outline. Despite the wealth of available hard substrates...

Chromodoris magnifica (Quoy & Gaimard, 1832), a new nudibranch host for the shrimp Periclimenes imperator Bruce, 1967 (Pontoniinae) Naturalis
Fransen, C.H.J.M.; Goud, J..
During the NNM/Maluku Expedition 1996, in the framework of the NNM Fauna Malesiana Marine Program, a shrimp belonging to the species Periclimenes imperator Bruce, 1967, was found on a nudibranch while diving at 20 m depth in Seri Bay, on the south coast of Ambon. Periclimens imperator has been recorded throughout the tropical Indo-West Pacific, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Hawaii, from nudibranch and holothurian hosts. The nudibranch was identified as Chromodorus magnifica (Quoy & Gaimard, 1832) (see Rudman, 1982: 216-219, figs. 17A, B, 18, 19). The association with Chromodorus magnifica is recorded here for the first time.

New data on southern African Achatinidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Increasing knowledge of the genital anatomy of the species of the African land snail family Achatinidae has greatly improved our understanding of the delimitation of the species and the intricate interrelationships of the various taxa (Mead, 1950). The genitalia of many achatinids are still unknown due to the absence of properly preserved animals. New data, mainly on the reproductive organs of recently collected material, are supplied here for two Southern African species, Archachatina sandgroundi Bequaert and A. dimidiata (Smith), which have now been dissected for the first time. Acknowledgements are due to Mr. J. F. Peake and his staff at the British Museum (Natural History), London, Prof. K. J. Boss of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard...

The identity of Isocrassina, Laevastarte and Ashtarotha (Mollusca, Bivalvia, Astartidae) and their representatives from beaches and estuaries in The Netherlands and Pliocene strata in Belgium Naturalis
Pouwer, R..
The identity of the subgenera Isocrassina Chavan, 1950, Laevastarte Hinsch, 1952, and Ashtarotha Dall, 1903, of the genus Astarte Sowerby, 1816 in the family Astartidae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) is discussed. Isocrassina has been widely used for Pliocene species in the North Sea Basin. Here it is demonstrated, that this is based on a redefinition of this subgenus, which excludes its type-species. As the North Sea species differ considerably from the type-species of Isocrassina in aspects of ornament and details of the hinge, it is concluded that they should be placed in the genus Laevastarte. A slightly modified definition of Isocrassina and Laevastarte is given and both are raised to genus level. The morphological basis for Ashtarotha is quite weak and it is...

Ammonite stratigraphy of the Valanginian to Barremian for the Mediterranean region Naturalis
Klein, J.; Hoedemaeker, P.J..
Since the 2nd Workshop of the Lower Cretaceous Cephalopod Team in Mula, Spain (Hoedemaeker et al., 1993), several ammonite zones and ammonite horizons have been introduced that still have not be inserted in the standard zonation of the Mediterranean area. In the present survey (1) the different results of various independent specialists are compared, (2) an attempt is made to correlate their resulting zonation schemes, and (3) recommendations are given for the use of the newly introduced zones and horizons in the Mediterranean region.

Notes on Bulimulidae (Gastropoda, Euthyneura), 7. Anatomy and histology of Simpulopsis (Simpulopsis) miersi Pfeiffer, 1856 Naturalis
Barros, J.L. de.
During recent years a group of Brazilian malacologists has contributed substantially to our knowledge of Brazilian Bulimulidae. The second author has been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to visit some of these specialists twice and to establish a close cooperation. This paper is the second in our joint series treating several species in greater detail. The first paper in this series is by Breure & Dos Santos Coelho (1976). The Arion Hortensis complex (Pulmonata: Arionidae): designation of types, descriptions, and destributional patterns, with special reference to the Netherlands Naturalis
Winter, A.J. de.
A lectotype of Arion hortensis Férussac, 1819 and a neotype of A. distinctus Mabille, 1868 are selected in order to assure nomenclatural stability. Descriptions of preserved specimens of these species from large parts of central and western Europe are provided, as well as of living animals from The Netherlands and Belgium. The main characters used by Davies (1977, 1979) to separate the British representatives of this complex were found suitable in the rest of Europe as well, in contrast to some characters given by De Wilde (1983). Arion owenii Davies, 1979 was not present in the material studied. Provisional UTM-distribution maps (50 km grid) of A. hortensis and A. distinctus in Europe (except the British Isles and Belgium) are provided, besides 10 km grid...

Some Anatomical, systematical and Geographical data on Neniinae (Gastropoda, Clausiliidae) Naturalis
Loosjes, F.A.; Loosjes-van Bemmel, A.C.W..
I. INTRODUCTION Up to the moment more than one hundred species and subspecies of Neniinae are known from Central and South America. They are incorporated into 22 genera and subgenera, almost exclusively based on characters of the shells. Only little is known of the anatomy of the animals (Binney, 1871; Binney & Bland, 1871; Baker, 1961; Hesse, 1925; Scott, 1954; Loosjes, 1957; Pilsbry, 1926; Polinski, 1922; Zilch, 1953, 1959). These authors described the radula and/or the genital organs of one or several species. Thus from eleven species the radula has been described and from five the genital apparatus. By the courtesy of Prof. Dr. W. Weyrauch we were able to study the anatomical features of a relatively large number (38) of Peruvian and Argentine...

Community ecology of tropical forest snails: 30 years after Solem Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M..
Since Solem’s provocative claim in the early 1980s that land snails in tropical forests are neither abundant nor diverse, at least 30 quantitative-ecological papers on tropical land snail communities have appeared. Jointly, these papers have shown that site diversity is, in fact, high in tropical forests; often more than 100 species have been recorded per site, which is somewhat more than normally found at sites in higher latitudes. At the same time, however, point diversities (which usually range between 10 and 30 species per quadrat) appear to be no different from the ones recorded for temperate localities, which suggests that the number of ways in which syntopic resource space can be subdivided among different land snail species has an upper limit that...

Vertigo substriata Jeffreys, faunae neerlandicae nova species, een zoogenaamd glaciaalrelikt Naturalis
Sunier, A.L.J..
Mejuffrouw W. S.
