On the presence of Bufo nasicus Werner in Guiana, with a redescription of the species on the basis of recently collected material Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
During research on material recently collected in Guyana and in Venezuelan Guiana, several specimens of the rare toad Bufo nasicus Werner, thus far only known from the holotype without known origin, were discovered. On the basis of this material the species is redescribed and some notes on its natural history are given. The species is a member of the Bufo typhonius-group.

Comparative tadpole morphology in three species of frogs of the genus Spinomantis (Amphibia: Mantellidae) Naturalis
Vejarano, S.; Thomas, M.; Vences, M..
We describe the tadpoles of three species of Malagasy frogs, classified in the genus Spinomantis, based on specimens identified by DNA barcoding. The tadpole of Spinomantis aglavei is a typical Orton type IV larva. The oral disc is not emarginated laterally, but has two mid-ventral folds and a labial tooth row formula of 3(2- 3)/2(1). The tadpole of S. phantasticus is similar, the oral disc being laterally emarginated and having one medial fold; LTRF is 3/3(1). A third species, S. cf. fimbriatus is also similar to the other two species; the oral disc is not laterally emarginated but has three medial folds and LTRF is 3(2-3)/3(1). One shared character is a median fold or emargination in the lower part of the oral disc, although the shape of this fold is...

Diversity, external morphology and ‘reverse taxonomy’ in the specialized tadpoles of Malagasy river bank frogs of the subgenus Ochthomantis (genus Mantidactylus) Naturalis
Randrianiaina, R.-D.; Strauß, A.; Glos, J.; Glaw, F.; Vences, M..
We provide detailed morphological descriptions of the tadpoles of Malagasy river bank frogs of the subgenera Ochthomantis and Maitsomantis (genus Mantidactylus, family Mantellidae), and data on relative abundance and habitat preferences of Ochthomantis species from Ranomafana National Park in southeastern Madagascar. Our study includes the tadpoles of six described and four undescribed candidate species. Eight of these larvae were previously unknown. Tadpoles were identified by DNA barcoding. Due to the very rudimentary taxonomic knowledge on Ochthomantis, we followed a ‘reverse taxonomy’ approach in which adult classification was to a great part determined on the basis of larval differences. By this procedure we even identified one candidate species whose...

Analysis of a herpetofaunal community from an altered marshy area in Sicily; with special remarks on habitat use (niche breadth and overlap), relative abundance of lizards and snakes, and the correlation between predator abundance and tail loss in lizards Naturalis
Luiselli, L.; Angelici, F.M.; Di Vittorio, M.; Spinnato, A.; Politano, E..
A field survey was conducted in a highly degraded barren environment in Sicily in order to investigate herpetofaunal community composition and structure, habitat use (niche breadth and overlap) and relative abundance of a snake predator and two species of lizard prey. The site was chosen because it has a simple community structure and thus there is potentially less ecological complexity to cloud any patterns observed. We found an unexpectedly high overlap in habitat use between the two closely related lizards that might be explained either by a high competition for space or through predator-mediated co-existence i.e. the prevention of the competitive exclusion of one lizard over the other. We also found a strong positive correlation between predator...

Morphological and genetic differentiation of Bufo toads: two cryptic species in Western Europe (Anura, Bufonidae) Naturalis
Arntzen, J.W.; McAtear, J.; Recuero, E.; Ziermann, J.M.; Ohler, A.; Alphen, J. van; Martínez-Solano, I..
The Common toad Bufo bufo sensu lato is a widespread, morphologically conserved taxon. Recent studies have uncovered deep genetic differentiation between population groups, highlighting the need to revise the current taxonomy of the group and recognize additional species. Here we investigate patterns of variation in molecular (a mitochondrial DNA restriction enzyme assay and sequence data for two nuclear DNA fragments totalling 979 bp) and 17 morphological variables in Northern France where two of these groups meet (B. bufo sensu stricto and B. spinosus), in order to delineate their contact zone and uncover characters that would allow discrimination of the two taxa. Mitochondrial DNA data show an abrupt transition from areas where B. bufo is present to...

Zoogeographic and Taxonomic status of the South American snake Tachymenis surinamensis (Colubridae) Naturalis
Myers, C.W..
Introduction Tachymenis is a characteristic genus of colubrid snakes inhabiting extreme western South America, from coastal Peru and Chile east to Bolivia (Walker, 1945; Peters & Orejas-Miranda, 1970). An extralimital species in Brazil, Tachymenis brasiliensis Gomes, was referred to its own genus (Gomesophis) by Hoge & Mertens (1959). One additional outlying species, Tachymenis surinamensis, was described from "Surinam" by Dunn in 1922, and, until now, has seemed a zoogeographic anomaly. In the present paper, we suggest that the type specimens of T. surinamensis bear erroneous locality data, and we refer the name to the synonymy of Philodryas elegans (Tschudi, 1845), a species of the coastal deserts of western South America. For lending specimens...

Herpetological Notes X - XII Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
X. NOTES ON THE NEWLY DESCRIBED GENUS CACOPHRYNE DAVIS Recently Davis (1935) pointed out that the toad known in literature as Bufo borbonicus (Tschudi) or Nectophryne borbonica (Tschudi) does not belong to either of these genera, and that it even does not belong to the Bufonidae, for the species differs from the true toads (Bufonidae) in two important characteristics, as it lacks Bidder's organs and does not possess testes of an elongated shape. Moreover the pectoral girdle proved to be firmisternal instead of arciferal. A new genus, Cacophryne, in the family Atelopodidae, was erected for this species by Davis, and this author (1935, p. 90) mentions that possibly some other species at present included in the genus Bufo, i.e., Bufo penangensis (Stol.),...

Notes upon some Sea Turtles Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
In recent years much attention is being paid to marine turtles, and it is the merit of Deraniyagala, Carr, and others to have contributed much to our knowledge of this group. Nevertheless, our knowledge of the species and subspecies that may be recognized, and that of their distribution is as yet far from complete. Before a satisfactory classification can be reached, many more data will have to be assembled. In the meantime, notes on variations in individual cases, and locality records may be of some value to future research. It is with this in mind that the present notes are published. They are based upon specimens in the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden (ML), of the Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam (ZMA), of the British Museum...

Studies on the species of the South American lizard genus Arthrosaura Boulenger (Reptilia: Sauria: Teiidae), with the resurrection of two species Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Avila-Pires, T.C.S..
Arthrosaura versteegii and Pantodactylus tyleri are resurrected from the synonymy of A. reticulata. Detailed descriptions of the three species are provided, a key to the species of the genus is presented, differences are pointed out and synonymy and distribution of the known species are given. Two of the species occur sympatrically in several areas, whereas in one area three species are sympatric. The distribution of A. kockii mainly is limited to the eastern part of the Guianas, but also encompasses eastern Pará; that of A. reticulata extends from the Amazonian lowlands of Ecuador to the mouth of the Amazon and also includes the Guianas, that of A. versteegii seems to be restricted to the Guianas, whereas A. tyleri is only known from a high altitude on...

Notes on the herpetofauna of Surinam : II. On the occurrence of Allophryne ruthveni Gaige (Amphibia, Salientia, Hylidae) in Surinam Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
INTRODUCTION In a recent paper, Lynch & Freeman (1966) discussed the systematic position of a small hylid frog, Allophryne ruthveni, described in 1926 by Gaige from British Guiana. They tentatively placed it in the family Hylidae, because it shows a better agreement with that family than with any other. The material available to them consisted of six specimens, all from "the foothills of the northeastern face of the Guiana Massif" in Guyana (formerly British Guiana). Since a few years the present author has been engaged in an investigation of the herpetofauna of Surinam (Dutch Guiana). During these studies, a fair number of A. ruthveni specimens was examined. In addition to the locality, of most of these the collecting date and some scanty notes on the...

Notes on the Herpetofauna of surinam : IX. Xenodon Werneri Eiselt, a poorly known snake from Guiana, with notes on Waglerophis Merremii (Wagler) (Reptilia: Serpentes: Colubridae) Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
Xenodon werneri Eiselt is redescribed on the basis of new material from Surinam and French Guiana. Its distribution and the Zoogeographie meaning of it are discussed. A key to the species of Xenodon in Guiana is presented. From the present data it appears that Waglerophis merremii (Wagler) is absent in Surinam, but present in the other two Guianas.

A new species of Leptotyphlops from Surinam Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
In his paper on a collection of Reptiles and Amphibians from Surinam VAN LIDTH DE JEUDE (1904, p. 84) mentions a specimen of Glauconia (= Leptotyphlops) macrolepis PTRS. Examination of this specimen showed that it differs in several characters from that species and I believe it to be a species new to science which I propose to name in honor of Professor Dr. J. E. W. IHLE of the Zoological Laboratory, University of Amsterdam, who always takes such a kind interest in my work and whom I always find willing to help me with advice. Leptotyphlops ihlei nov. spec. The snakes of Somaliland and the Sokotra Islands Naturalis
Parker, H.W..
The systematic status of the snakes recorded from the area has been reinvestigated, often in the light of new material. Allometric growth is shown to occur in several species and taxonomic errors arising from its previous non-recognition are rectified. The same feature is also used to determine the respective ontogenetic levels of closely allied forms. The fauna of the Sokotra group is shown to have greater relationships with the Palaearctic and Oriental regions than with the Ethiopian and to consist of mainly primitive types; they are assumed to have been isolated in the islands since the mid-Miocene. The mainland fauna, though predominantly Ethiopian, contains a strong northern admixture and this element predominates in the northern coastal plain which...

Notes on the herpetofauna of Surinam : III. A new species of Dendrobates (Amphibia salientia, Dendrobatidae) from Surinam Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
INTRODUCTION During a recent collecting trip, financed by grant W 956-2 from WOTRO (Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research), I spent 47 days (22 August-7 October 1968) on the Sipaliwini savannah in southern Surinam. The Sipaliwini savannah is part of an extensive savannah that covers the watershed between the Sipaliwini River in Surinam and the Paroe River in Brazil. Though the watershed is very low, the waters of Sipaliwini and Paroe Rivers never seem to make contact, as is the case with other rivers on the Rupununi savannah and in southern French Guiana. About one tenth of this savannah is situated in Surinam, the remainder in Brazil (see inset fig. 3). G. Mann (in Fittkau et al., 1968) calls this a tropical wet savannah and...

Land tortoise types in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie with comments on nomenclature and systematic (Reptilia: Testudines: Testudinidae) Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Crumly, C.R..
The holotype of Testudo vosmaeri Fitzinger, 1826 [= Geochelone vosmaeri] is RMNH 6001. The holotype of Testudo forstenii Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= lndotestudo forstenii] is RMNH 3811. I. forstenii is considered a senior synonym of T. travancorica Boulenger, 1907 because plastral colour pattern, gular measurements, and general shell morphology do not distinguish Indian populations from Indonesian populations. The lectotype of Testudo emys Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= Manouria emys] is RMNH 3808. lndotestudo and Manouria are recognized as separate genera and briefly diagnosed. In order to avoid nomenclatural confusion and conserve current usuage, the pre-Linnaean figure in Piso (1658: 105) is selected as the lectotype for Testudo geometrica Linnaeus,...

DNA barcoding, phylogeny and systematics of Golden-backed frogs (Hylarana, Ranidae) of the Western Ghats-Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot, with the description of seven new species Naturalis
Biju, S.D.; Garg, S.; Mahony, S.; Wijayathilaka, N.; Senevirathne, G.; Meegaskumbura, M..
A systematic revision of the genus Hylarana in the Western Ghats-Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot is presented. Species delineation in Hylarana is complicated due to a lack of distinct colour differences or striking morphological characters, leading to potential misidentification. We conducted extensive surveys throughout the Western Ghats-Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot and performed multiple gene (16S, COI and Cytb) barcoding using 103 samples collected from cultivated land and natural habitats. Genetic distance comparisons and Neighbor Joining trees indicated the presence of at least 14 candidate species in the region, supported by taxa groupings for all three genetic markers. Utilising a combination of molecular and morphological data, we describe seven...

Preliminary notes on the taxonomy of Tarentola annularis and T. ephippiata (Sauria: Gekkonida) Naturalis
Grandison, A.G.C..
Among a large collection of West African lizards sent to me for identification early in 1952 by l'lnstitut Français d'Afrique Noire were a number of individuals belonging to the genus Tarentola. The latest taxonomic treatment of Tarentola available at that time was by Loveridge (1947). In his study he had considered Tarentola annularis and T. ephippiata to be geographical races of a single species, the subspecies annularis occurring in Egypt, Sinai, Eritrea, Ethiopia and British Somaliland and the subspecies ephippiata occurring to the west of these areas, in Nigeria, French West Africa, Portuguese Guinea and Gambia. He also synonymised T. senegalensis Boulenger with ephippiata and suggested that T. hoggarensis Werner might be a synonym too. Thus,...

On a new species of Denisonia (Reptilia, Serpentes) from New Guinea Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D.; Knaap-van Meeuwen, M.S..
Until now the Elapid genus Denisonia had not been recorded from New Guinea, and this is remarkable in so far as the genus is known from Australia (and Tasmania) to the south, and from the Solomon Islands to the northeast of New Guinea. It is therefore not very surprising that now evidence has been procured of the presence of the genus in New Guinea. A single specimen of a species that we believe to be new to science was collected at Merauke in southern West New Guinea by Mr. A. J. M. Monsanto in 1959. The genus Denisonia is here accepted in its old sense, such as it was used by Boulenger (1896, p. 332), and by the majority of subsequent authors. Recently, Worrell (1961a; 1961b, pp. 24-26; 1963) has made attempts to divide Denisonia into eight genera, but...

The Anatomy of Natrix vittata (L.) Naturalis
Bergman, R.A.M..
MATERIAL AND PROBLEM For the investigation of the anatomical pattern of Natrix vittata, the same material was used as for the description of the life of this snake. A preliminary question was whether both groups from Surabaia and from Tjimahi may be used for statistical treatment as a single unit or if they represent different varieties. The animals are easily recognisable and there is no outward sign which would indicate a difference between the group from the eastern coastal plains and the one from the western hills although the distance between both localities is about 800 km. The range of the body length is for both groups the same, for adult males in Surabaia 341-441 and in Tjimahi 346-457, and for females 392-560 and 395-555. In none of the other...
