The FAST Method: Estimating Unconditional Demand Elasticities for Processed Foods in the Presence of Fixed Effects AgEcon
Bergtold, Jason S.; Akobundu, Eberechukwu; Peterson, Everett B..
This study estimates a set of unconditional own-price and expenditure elasticities across time for 49 processed food categories using scanner data and the FAST multi-stage demand system with fixed effects across time. Estimated own-price elasticities are generally much larger, in absolute terms, than previous estimates, while our expenditure elasticities are generally much lower. The use of disaggregated product groupings, scanner data, and the estimation of unconditional elasticities likely accounts for these differences. Results of the study suggest providing more disaggregate product-level demand elasticities could aid in the economic analysis of issues relating to industry competitiveness or the impact of public policy.

MUDANÇA INSTITUCIONAL E O IMPACTO NO PADRÃO TECNOLÓGICO: O CASO DA MECANIZAÇÃO DA COLHEITA DE CANA-DE-AÇÚCAR NO PARANÁ AgEcon
Junqueira, Clarissa Pereira; Sterchile, Shirla Patricia Weber; Shikida, Pery Francisco Assis.
Due to changes in the institutional environment, mainly the Law 11.241/2002 (SP), which limits the burning of sugarcane and favors the mechanization of its harvest, there is a new technological pattern in the Brazilian production of sugar and alcohol. The objective of this article is to analyze the reasons behind the adoption of the mechanized harvest in the sugar and alcohol sector of Paraná state through field research (interviews and questionnaires applied during the second semester of 2007). The results show that the mechanization of the sugar cane harvest in Paraná was due to market pressures, allied to other factors: scarce labor in the state, environmental and market pressures, change of the technological standards and costs imputed by São Paulo...

Evaluating Marketing Channel Options for Small-Scale Fruit and Vegetable Producers: Case Study Evidence from Central New York AgEcon
LeRoux, Matthew N.; Schmit, Todd M.; Roth, Monika; Streeter, Deborah H..
An investigation of the relative costs and benefits of marketing channels used by typical small-scale diversified vegetable crop producers is conducted. Using case study evidence from four small farms in Central New York, this study compares the performance of wholesale and direct marketing channels, including how the factors of risk, owner and paid labor, price, lifestyle preferences, and sales volume interact to impact optimal market channel selection. Given the highly perishable nature of the crops grown, along with the risks and potential sales volume of particular channels, a combination of different marketing channels is needed to maximize overall firm performance. Accordingly, a ranking system is developed to summarize the major firm-specific...

The benefits to the Australian Pig meat industry from an increase in demand for a hypothetical low cholesterol pork product AgEcon
Slattery, Henry; Griffith, Garry R.; Malcolm, Bill; Dunshea, Frank.
This is the third of a series of papers examining the potential economic effects from the introduction of a hypothetical low cholesterol pork product into the Australian market. Here, a newly updated pig meat model reported by Griffith et al. (2010) is used to model the industry wide impacts of the Bellhouse et al. (2010) survey results on consumer willingness to pay for this new pork product. Six different scenarios are examined that are combinations of a 10, 20 or 30 per cent increase in consumer demand, with and without a 10 per cent increase in the costs of producing the more valuable pork. The simulation results for the various scenarios indicate total annual industry benefits of some $450m for an increase in aggregate willingness to pay of 30 per...

Az ökológiai gazdálkodás hatékonysági kérdései AgEcon
Alvincz, Jozsef; Koltai, Judit Petra.
Mindez...

Identifying and Measuring the Effect of Firm Clusters Among Certified Organic Processors and Handlers AgEcon
Jaenicke, Edward C.; Goetz, Stephan J.; Wu, Ping-Chao; Dimitri, Carolyn.
This paper investigates the certified organic handler sector, a specialized component of the middle part of the farm-to-table marketing chain, and documents the impacts of firm agglomeration (or firm clusters) on firm-level performance or firm-level decisions. After accounting for endogeneity in firm clustering, our findings confirm that firm clusters have significant impacts, though the estimate of the impact depends on how a firm cluster is defined. For example, significant impacts on sales per employee range from an additional $0.17 million to $1.47 million, depending on whether a small or large number of firms is used as the minimum number to define a firm cluster.

THE GROCERY STORES' WAGE DISTRIBUTION: A SEMI-PARAMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE ROLE OF RETAILING AND LABOR MARKET INSTITUTIONS AgEcon
Budd, John W.; McCall, Brian P..
How and why has the wage distribution in U.S. grocery stores changed between 1984 and 1994? Unlike other industries in the time period, the important change in the wage distribution is not rising inequality, but the real wages fell across the entire wage distribution. Changes in labor market institutions explain more than half of the change in the wage distribution in grocery stores. Specifically, the decline in the real value of the minimum wage explains little of the decline in the mean real wage but much of the change in the shape of the distribution between 1984 and 1994, and 95 percent of the decline at the lowest 10th percentile. The decline in union coverage in grocery stores and the narrowing of the union-nonunion wage gap explains much of the...

Sourcing and Promotion of Local Foods by Food Cooperatives in the U.S. AgEcon
Katchova, Ani L.; Woods, Timothy A..
This study examines the role that food consumer cooperatives play in the local food networks. Data are collected from three case studies with leading food cooperatives and a national survey of the general managers of food cooperatives. We identify the emerging business practices in local sourcing as a differentiation and member recruitment strategy for food cooperatives. Our analysis identifies several clusters of strategies used for local food procurement, based on the extent to which the co-op is involved in procurement activities upstream (at the farm), mid-stream (at the distribution center) or downstream (at the food cooperative). The results also show that when compared to other grocers, food co-ops have clear advantages in working with local...

Scheme of Constructing CGE Model of China's Direct Grain Subsidy Policy AgEcon
Wang, Can.
This paper introduces the model of China's direct grain subsidy policy, adopts computable general equilibrium (CGE) theory, and advances the scheme of constructing the model of China's direct grain subsidy policy. On the basis of some assumptions, such as conforming to the complete competition of market, inexistence of move of capital and labor forces among countries, unchanged exchange rate and incomplete substitution, and the main body of behavior comprising representative households, producers, local government and central government, the model established in this paper includes production module and demand module. Moreover, the model takes into account equilibrium structure, the definition of profiting and macro condition for closure, the related...

Copper Mining and Environmental Costs in Dominica AgEcon
Harris-Charles, Emaline L.; Pemberton, Carlisle A..
A proposal from an international mining company to establish a copper mining operation in the Caribbean island of Dominica could be highly favourable, given the potential for financial benefits associated with such a project. On the downside, such projects are often associated with environmental damage. The area targeted for this copper mine was a rainforest in the north-eastern portion of Dominica occupying around 12 percent of the island’s total land area. A critical question is therefore whether copper mining could be a viable alternative to agrarian uses of the targeted area, if both financial and environmental costs are taken into consideration. A Contingent Valuation Survey of Dominicans and Visitors allowed for inclusion of non-market costs...

Modelling Regional Agricultural Output Adjustments in Scotland in Response to CAP Reform AgEcon
Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Leat, Philip M.K.; Milne, Catherine E..
The purpose of the paper is to present an agricultural supply model for Scotland used to estimate regional changes in agricultural outputs due to the 2003 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform. Supply functions were estimated for several farm types based on generalised trans-logarithmic multiproduct cost functions (Caves, Christensen and Tretheway, 1981). The data used for the estimation were an unbalanced panel dataset constructed using farm level data from the Scottish Government’s Farm Accounts Scheme (FAS) survey. Using the estimated supply adjustments, individual farm level responses to subsidy and price changes were aggregated using agricultural census weights to estimate the output changes for different regions

ENHANCING BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FOOD WHOLESALE SECTOR: A CASE STUDY OF NEW JERSEY AgEcon
Adelaja, Adesoji O.; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Tank, Karen Rose; Schilling, Brian J..
New Jersey is very much like many other states in the northeastern region of the United States. On the other hand, it is unique in a number of ways. New Jersey is characterized by (1) a large and affluent consumer base, (2) access to major ports and air transportation facilities which facilitates foreign imports and exports, and (3) large food manufacturing, retail and service sectors. New Jersey's food wholesale sector is therefore an important economic sector with strong potential for future growth. Food wholesalers can provide stable high-paying jobs in an economy still recovering from the 1989-92 recession. Limited knowledge of the challenges facing this sector may hinder its potential growth and development. Given the implications that could be...

ANALYZING THE PERCEIVED IMPACT OF ISO 9000 STANDARDS ON U.S. AGRIBUSINESSES SITES AgEcon
Mumma, Gerald A.; Allen, Albert J.; Couvillion, Warren C.; Abdulkadri, Abdullahi O.; Mugalla, Constance Ileko.
We used a non-competitive market framework to assess the perceived impact of ISO 9000 standards on the operational efficiency of registered U.S. agribusiness sites. Kendall Coefficient of Concordance, W, was used to rank selected reasons for seeking registration to ISO 9000 standards. The results indicated that registered sites seem to be achieving their goals for registration.

Southern Dairy Farmers' Evaluation of Milk Handlers AgEcon
Liebrand, Carolyn; Carley, Dale H.; Ling, K. Charles.
Southern dairy farmers' perception of their cooperative's or proprietary handler's performance, level of satisfaction with the milk handler, and reasons for staying with the handler, or for shifting handlers, were evaluated. The data were from a 1989 mail survey of Southern dairy farmers. The dairy farmers' differing evaluations of their milk handlers depended on the type of handler they dealt with, geographic location, and/or the characteristics of the farm and farmer. Generally, dairy farmers were concerned about price, deductions, and assessments. The price farmers received appeared to be a significant factor affecting farmers' satisfaction level. There appeared to be a tradeoff between price and deductions versus service, and market and payment...
