Abatement costs for agricultural nitrogen and phosphorus loads: a case study of South-Western Finland Organic Eprints
Helin, Janne; Laukkanen, Marita; Koikkalainen, Kauko.
Designing efficient agri-environmental policies for agricultural nutrient load reductions calls for information on the costs of emission reduction measures. This study develops an empirical framework for estimating abatement costs for nutrient loading from agricultural land. Nitrogen abatement costs and the phosphorus load reductions associated with nitrogen abatement are derived for crop farming in southern Finland. The model is used to evaluate the effect of the Common Agricultural Policy reform currently underway on nutrient abatement costs. Results indicate that an efficiency designed policy aimed at a 50 % reducton in agricultural nitrogen load would cost 25 to 28 million euro, or 1995 to 2197 euro per farm.

Environmental life cycle assessment of organic grass protein from multispecies mixtures Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Dorca-preda, Teodora; Djomo, Sylvestre Njakou; Kristensen, Troels; Ambye-Jensen, Morten; Møller, Henrik B.; Dupont, Y.L.; Cong, W-F; Eriksen, Jørgen.
Including grass leys in organic arable rotations has potentially several benefits such as suppression of certain weeds, increased biodiversity (i.e. pollinators), increased soil carbon sequestration and productivity among others. The biomass from the grass mixtures can be refined into protein feed concentrate for monogastrics that can partly replace imported soybean, while the fibre fraction can be used as ruminant feed or for biogas. The grass mixtures can also be used directly for biogas. Increasing diversity of the mixtures will potentially also increase the yield stability and the benefits for biodiversity (pollinators), while the number of cuts per year will also have an effect. Thus, the use of multispecies mixtures in organic arable rotation for...

Gattinger, Andreas; Hörtenhuber, Stefan; Klocke, Peter; Lindenthal, Thomas; Schader, Christian.

Novel Strategies for Climate Mitigation, Sustainability and Healthy Eating in Public Foodscapes. Proceedings of a seminar held at Aalborg University, Copenhagen Institute of Technology, Denmark,November 25th-26th, 2009. Organic Eprints
The FoodPrint09 conference, on novel strategies for climate mitigation, sustainability and healthy eating in public foodscapes, held in Copenhagen in the end of November 2009 underlined the need to take climate impact of public food into consideration when developing strategies for sustainable consumption and healthy eating in public food systems. Traditional food choice strategies address the responsibility of the individual. The iPOPY research project takes a different approach - a collective one. iPOPY research focus on how professional decision makers, public planners and politicians can impact climate through the strategies chosen in large scale food environments and how organic food supply can be integrated. The conference focused on settings...

Comparative analysis of conventional and organic farming systems: Nitrogen surpluses and nitrogen losses Organic Eprints
Kelm, Dr. Michael; Loges, Dr. Ralf; Taube, Prof. Dr. Friedhelm.
Nutrient management is a key factor for both economic viability and environmental performance of farming systems. On 32 representative conventional and organic farms in Northern Germany, nutrient management was analyzed in the interdisciplinary monitoring project “COMPASS”. Organic farms had significantly lower nitrogen (N) surpluses compared with conventional farms. The majority of organic farms had very low or even negative N surpluses, indicating insufficient N supply in the cropping system. Nitrogen leaching, however, was too high in many cases on both conventional and organic farms. Strategies for a more targeted nutrient supply in organic farming need to be developed and implemented.

Productivity and N-leaching in organic dairy grass-arable crop rotations Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M.; Søegaard, K..
Increasing size of organic dairy farms makes grazing of all cropped land inexpedient due to long distance to the milking facilities. We investigated nutrient dynamics and feed production in two dairy crop rotations with differences in proportion of grazing and cutting. One six year crop rotation represents close to the farm buildings (barley undersown with grass-clover - 4 years of grass-clover - spring barley/catch crop) and another represents further away (barley undersown with grass-clover, 2 years of grass-clover -barley/catch crop - maize/catch crop - lupin/catch crop). In each of the crop rotations was made five treatments concerning grazing/cutting strategy and manure application. Results shows that herbage production was high in year 1-4 of...

Gezielte Umstellungsförderung in Wasserschutzgebieten Organic Eprints

Taube, Friedhelm; Wachendorf, M.; Loges, R..

Environmental and economic consequences of large-scale conversion to organic farming in Croatia Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko.
Organic farming is a rapidly growing sector both in Croatia and elsewhere. However, there is some concern as to what a widespread adoption of organic farming would bring to society as a whole. The costs and benefits of this development and the associated trade-offs are largely unknown and have hardly been explored. There is a vast body of evidence showing that organic farming in most cases environmentally outperforms non-organic systems. However, organic farming is associated with lower yields and its further expansion might lead to job losses in some other sectors and potentially jeopardise the overall economic strength of a country. This research presents an attempt to assess the environmental and economic consequences of the large-scale adoption of...

An approach to include soil carbon changes in life cycle assessments Organic Eprints
Petersen, B.M.; Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Hermansen, J.E.; Halberg, Niels.
Globally, soil carbon sequestration is expected to hold a major potential to mitigate agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. However, the majority of life cycle assessments (LCA) of agricultural products have not included possible changes in soil carbon sequestration. In the present study, a method to estimate carbon sequestration to be included in LCA is suggested and applied to two examples where the inclusion of carbon sequestration is especially relevant: 1) Bioenergy: removal of straw from a Danish soil for energy purposes and 2) Organic versus conventional farming: comparative study of soybean production in China. The suggested approach considers the time of the soil CO2 emissions for the LCA by including the Bern Carbon Cycle Model. Time...

Vergleich von Treibhausgasemissionen unterschiedlich wirtschaftender Modellbetriebe im Alpenvorland Organic Eprints
Kasper, Martina; Freyer, Bernhard; Schmid, Harald; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen; Amon, Barbara; Friedel, Jürgen K..
About 8.8 % (UBA 2010) of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Austria are caused by agricultural practices. Besides the release of climate relevant gases, C-sequestration occurs depending on the natural conditions and farming system. The focus of the project was to describe the GHG-emissions and sinks of the most relevant farming types, both organic and conventional, within the main production areas in Austria. Results of an intensively cultivated region in the North-West are presented. Based on the input data, six model-farms were created with the programme REPRO, whereby forage production, cash crops and refinement systems were considered. All systems had a positive humus balance and sequestered carbon in the soil, especially forage...

Peracetic Acid Products Expand Sanitizing, Organic Water Treatment Options Organic Eprints
Pedersen, Lars-Flemming; Jokumsen, Alfred; Larsen, Villy J.; Henriksen, Niels Henrik.
Peracetic acids can be used as sanitizers to control water quality in aquaculture systems. As an alternative to formalin, chloramine-T or copper sulphate, PAA has strong anti-microbial effects, degrades quickly and is relatively safe to use. Its mode of action and associated rapid decay can make optimizing treatment protocols a challenge. Continuous low-dose applications seem to be a promising solution. PAA is among the few disinfectants approved for organic aquaculture

Acqua pulita nel lago di Zugo? 25 per cento di aziende biologiche! Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto.
