As part of the CoreOrganic II project ProPig, researchers and advisors assessed animal health, welfare and environmental impact on 74 organic pig farms across eight European countries and in different housing systems, including outdoor, indoor and partly outdoor systems. Based on these assessments, improvement strategies were developed together with pig farmers and compiled in this handbook. The recommendations are intended to guide farmers and advisors in developing pig management, housing, and feeding towards optimal animal health and welfare. |

Organic agriculture is defined as a low-external-input-system but piglets’ necessity for high quality diets seems to contradict low-external-input feeding strategies. Hence, a total of 361 piglets was tested from day 14 – 63 post natum concerning performance, health status, losses and diet costs by means of four feeding strategies of 100% organic origin: (i) high-external-input diet, (ii) medium-external-input diet, (iii) lowexternal-input diet, each with grass-clover-silage as roughage source, and (iv) above mentioned low-external-input diet with straw replacing grass-clover-silage. The highexternal-input-diet achieved the significantly highest live weight gain; all other strategies were similar at a lower level. There were no differences in health... |

Feed value in form of FEsv (Feed unit / kg dry matter, for piglets) and FEso (Feed unit / kg dry matter, for sows), EDOM (Enzyme Degradable Organic Matter) and EDOMi (Enzyme Degradable Organic Matter, Ileum) is used in the feed evaluation system for pigs. Analysis of feed value have highlighted that there is a significant variation between varieties as well as due to an environmental variation between regions and the harvest year. The chemical analysis is, however, time-consuming and costly, and it is therefore desirable to have a rapid and less expensive method, which makes it possible to carry out more analyses in-situ. |

In Switzerland cattle are kept in a range of different production systems and environments: From lowland to mountain area, from intensive to extensive feeding systems and from conventional to organic production systems. Some of these environments can be classified as harsh environments. It is assumed that some genotypes affect traits differently in diverging environments. If that would be the case, genotype x environment (GxE) interactions would cause re-rankings of the cattle’s corresponding breeding values in the breeding value list. |

In a feeding trial 450 layer chickens were fed either of 3 isoenergetic diets supplemented with different fish meal, grounded fly meal (Musca domestica) or fly meal and fresh fly larvae. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of feeding grounded fly larva to layer chickens as an alternative protein source for fish meal in organic poultry. Parameters investigated were weight gain, food consumption, animal behavior and study whether it would have effect on intestinal health. |

Marginal rural areas suffer from isolation and a lack of communication with the outside world. The renaissance of rural values and food quality-related issues has brought many urban people to again approach rural areas and actors, sometimes with the intermediation of other more or less professional actors. In an EU share cost project TRUC (EU-QoL:QLAM-2001-00025; 2001-2003), several cases of regional and rural development throughout Europe have been analysed on the topic of transforming rural communication. We present three of these cases in northern Germany: the Model Region Luebeck Bay, Organic Milk and Nature Protection. All of these projects are located in an area where urbanization and the multifunctionality of rural action and development is highly... |

This study investigates into the role of indigenous medicinal plants used in traditionally managed cattle in five locations of Odeda local government area, Ogun state, humid zone of Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was used to collect personal data of cattle rearers, plant specimens and pertinent information on plant use. Results showed that cattle rearers were majorly men from the Fulani tribe with no formal education. A total of twenty (20) plants were identified and evaluated for the treatment of cattle parasites and diseases, with various parts namely leaves, stems, bark, seeds, fruits and twigs been used, the leaves been widely utilized. However, the mode of preparation and application of these plants parts require different methods. These... |

Organic farming is based on the idea of an environmentally-friendly food production system with high animal welfare standards. But in the real world there are many difficulties in reaching these goals. Many problems in animal health and welfare remain unresolved, presenting a challenge for individual producers and the industry as a whole. These inculde: achieving balanced, 100%-organic, feed rations that produce adequate growth rates and high quality products, animal-friendly transport and slaughtering, the sustainable use of local resources and, last but not least, profitability and the efficent use of resources. |
