A taxonomic revision of the genus Guatteria, including the former genera Guatteriella, Guatteriopsis and Heteropetalum is given. Within the genus Guatteria 177 species are recognized, 25 of which are new. Included are chapters on the history of the taxonomy of the genus, morphology, wood anatomy, karyology, palynology, chemistry, flower biology and pollination, dispersal, distribution and ecology, phylogeny and molecular studies, conservation, and uses. A synoptical key to all species is included, as well as two dichotomous keys, one for the species of Central America and Mexico, and one for the species of NE, E and SE Brazil. The species treatments include descriptions, full synonymy, geographical and ecological notes, vernacular names and taxonomic... |

A taxonomic revision of the genus Desmopsis is presented. Within the genus Desmopsis 25 species are recognized, 9 of which are new, with one new combination. Distinguishing morphological characteristics are discussed, and a dichotomous key to all species is given. The species treatments include descriptions, full synonymy, geographical and ecological notes, vernacular names, and taxonomic notes. Distribution maps are presented of all species, and a complete identification list of exsiccatae examined is included. |

A taxonomic revision is made of the Neotropical genus Pseudoxandra. This genus forms part of the Cremastosperma alliance which consists of Bocageopsis, Cremastosperma, Ephedranthus, Klarobelia, Malmea, Mosannona, Onychopetalum, Oxandra, Pseudephedranthus, Pseudomalmea, Pseudoxandra, Ruizodendron, and Unonopsis, all from the Neotropics. Within Pseudoxandra 22 species are recognized, four of which were described quite recently by the first author (Maas et al., 1986). Fourteen species are described here as new. Two dichotomous keys are provided, one for the genera of the Cremastosperma alliance, and the other for the species of Pseudoxandra. The species treatments include descriptions, geographical and ecological notes, distribution maps, synonymy, taxonomic... |

A taxonomic revision of the Austro-Malesian species of Miliusa Lesch. ex A.DC. (Annonaceae) is presented. Ten species can be recognised in the area, including one new species, Miliusa novoguineensis, described here. Most species are restricted to certain islands or geographic areas. Miliusa horsfieldii (Benn.) Pierre is the main exception as it is distributed from Hainan up to Queensland, Australia. Six of the ten species (except M. amplexicaulis Ridl., M. longipes King, M. macropoda Miq. and M. parviflora Ridl.) have a deciduous habit, and are largely restricted to areas with a monsoon climate. A key, based primarily on generative characters, and descriptions to the species are included. |

A revision of the genus Phaeanthus Hook.f. & Thomson (Annonaceae) is presented. The genus comprises 8 species. A key to the fruiting and/or flowering specimens of the genus is included. The genus consists of shrubs to small-sized trees from Malesia and Vietnam. It is characterised by sepals and outer petals that are alike, numerous carpels and stamens, the latter truncate with a distinctive connective prolongation, monocarpous fruits, and leaves often drying dark brown to black. A phylogenetic analysis shows the monophyly of the genus and that Phaeanthus nutans can be considered the sister species of the remaining species. |

The genus Mezzettiopsis Ridl. (Annonaceae) is revised and transferred to Orophea Blume subgenus Sphaerocarpon Keßler. Phylogenetic analysis of subgenus Sphaerocarpon and Mezzettiopsis places Mezzettiopsis within the subgenus. Furthermore, the prevalence of common or overlapping character states and the paucity of unique character states necessitate the transfer. Two species were transferred from Mezzettiopsis. Of these, one species of Orophea is reinstated and one new combination is made. Three species are described as new. In total, nine species are fully described. Sphaerocarpon is a subgenus of small, tropical, lowland trees distributed from Sulawesi westwards to South India. It is characterised by having sepals and outer petals that are sessile or... |

(Annonaceae). The closeness of these three genera was expressed by Fries when he placed them in his (informal) Unonopsis group (Fries, 1959), and the close relationship is supported by more recent phylogenetic research as well. Four species are recognized in Bocageopsis and two species in Onychopetalum. Unonopsis is by far the largest of the three genera with close to 50 species, of which no less than 23 species are here described as new. One species (Unonopsis umbilicata) had to be shelved as insufficiently known for lack of data, and another, obviously new, species from Colombia is too incomplete and is described provisionally as Unonopsis spec. A. Several keys are provided, one for the genera and one each for the species of Bocageopsis and... |

This paper deals with a group of species of the Neotropical genus Guatteria (Annonaceae) which are characterized by leaves with tiny warts (verruculae) on both surfaces and by elongate and short-stipitate monocarps (i.e., the length of the monocarp body surpassing the length of the stipe). These species were placed by Fries in Guatteria sect. Mecocarpus (Fries 1939) (the name derives from Ancient Greek μηκων = Poppy and καρπος = fruit: fruit resembling that of Papaver species). All occur in South America, none having been found elsewhere so far. Although there is much doubt nowadays about the taxonomic significance of Fries’s sections, we maintain sect. Mecocarpus at present for convenience’s sake. Additionally, the former genus Guatteriopsis, united with... |
