Effect of the ascorbic acid treatment on the NADHd-positive myenteric neurons of diabetic rats proximal colon BABT
Zanoni,Jacqueline Nelisis; Pereira,Renata Virginia Fernandes; Freitas,Priscila de.
The aim of this work was to study the effect of the ascorbic acid on the myenteric neurons of diabetic rats proximal colon. Fifteen rats (90 days old) were divided into three groups: control, untreated diabetic and treated diabetic with ascorbic acid (DA). After 120 days of daily treatment with ascorbic acid, the intestinal segments were submitted to the NADH-diaphorase (NADHd) histochemistry technique to expose the myenteric neurons. The group DA showed a higher neuronal density (33.4 %) when compared to the untreated diabetic animals (p < 0.05). Cellular body area of neurons was significantly larger in group DA (17.3 %) when compared to the untreated diabetics (p < 0.05). It could be concluded that the ascorbic acid promoted a neuroprotective...

Local treatment with ascorbic acid accelerates recovery of post-sutured Achilles tendon in male Wistar rats BJMBR
Souza,M.; Moraes,S.A.S.; de Paula,D.R.; Maciel,A.A.; Batista,E.J.O.; Silva,D.G.F.; Bahia,C.P.; Oliveira,K.R.H.M.; Herculano,A.M..
Tendon rupture is a very frequent accident involving average people and high-performance athletes. Clinical studies describe tendon recovery as a painful and slow process involving different biochemical and histological events. Ascorbic acid (AA) is a potent antioxidant as well as an important cofactor for collagen synthesis. In the current study, we evaluated if local treatment with AA is able to promote tendon repair in tenotomized rats. Animals were submitted to Achilles tendon rupture followed by surgical suture. Control and AA groups received in loco injection of saline solution (0.9% NaCl) and 30 mM AA, respectively. Histological and functional recovery of Achilles tendon tissue was evaluated at 7, 14, and 21 days post-surgery. Hematoxylin/eosin...

Effects of N-acetylcysteine on spinal cord oxidative stress biomarkers in rats with neuropathic pain BJMBR
Horst,A.; de Souza,J.A.; Santos,M.C.Q.; Riffel,A.P.K.; Kolberg,C.; Partata,W.A..
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) inhibits nociceptive transmission. This effect has been associated partly with its antioxidant properties. However, the effect of NAC on the levels of lipid hydroperoxides (a pro-oxidant marker), content of ascorbic acid (a key antioxidant molecule of nervous tissue) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is unknown. Thus, our study assessed these parameters in the lumbosacral spinal cord of rats with chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve, one of the most commonly employed animal models of neuropathic pain. Thirty-six male Wistar rats weighing 200–300 g were equally divided into the following groups: Naive (rats did not undergo surgical manipulation); Sham (rats in which all surgical procedures involved in CCI were...

Evaluation of the addition of ascorbic acid to the ration of cultivated Piaractus mesopotamicus (Characidae) on the infrapopulation of Anacanthorus penilabiatus (Monogenea) BJMBR
Martins,M.L..
Sixty Piaractus mesopotamicus Holmberg, 1887 (pacu) fry fed a diet containing 0, 50, 100 and 200 mg ascorbic acid/kg dry feed were studied to evaluate the effect on parasitic infestation by the monogenean Anacanthorus penilabiatus Boeger, Husak and Martins, 1995 (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) for a period of 24 weeks. The temperature of the aquaria was measured daily and remained between 28 and 31oC. At the beginning of the experiment, fish showed 6.15 ± 0.33 cm standard length and 8.64 ± 1.62 g average body weight. A sample of fish was examined and showed 43 ± 17 monogeneans per fish. At the end of the experiment, the gills of control and vitamin C-treated fish were collected for parasite counts. Control fish had 42.5 parasites per fish, a significantly...

Cadmium toxicity causes oxidative stress and induces response of the antioxidant system in cucumber seedlings Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Gonçalves,Jamile F.; Becker,Alexssandro G.; Cargnelutti,Denise; Tabaldi,Luciane A.; Pereira,Luciane B.; Battisti,Vanessa; Spanevello,Rosélia M.; Morsch,Vera M.; Nicoloso,Fernando T.; Schetinger,Maria R.C..
In this study, the effects of cadmium (Cd) on lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, protein oxidation, ascorbate peroxidase (APX; E.C. 1.11.1.11), catalase (CAT; E.C. 1.11.1.6) and superoxide dismutase (SOD; E.C. 1.15.1.1) activities, and ascorbic acid, non-protein thiol groups and total soluble protein contents in cucumber seedlings (Cucumis sativus L.) were investigated. Seedlings were grown in vitro in an agar-solidified substrate containing four Cd levels as CdCl2 (0, 100, 400, and 1000 µmol L-1) for 10 d. The lowest Cd level decreased the malondialdehyde concentration. Electrolyte leakage increased only at 1000 µmol Cd L-1, whereas protein oxidation and total soluble protein content were enhanced at 400 and 1000 µmol Cd L-1. Activity of APX was...

B.A. Latorre, R. Torres, T. Silva, and K. Elfar. 2013. Evaluation of the use of wound-protectant fungicides and biological control agents against stem canker (Neofusicoccum parvum) of blueberry. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(3): 537-545. Economically, blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) has become a very important fruit crop in Chile, and stem canker (Neofusicoccum parvum) has frequently been observed as a major disease. The symptoms are characterized by partial or total death of the foliage associated with extensive reddish-brown canker lesions at the base of the stems. Pruning wounds appear to be the main infection route. In this study, fungicide pastes and biological control agents were evaluated for their effectiveness as pruning wound-protectants against N. parvum....
