Fructan variation in the rhizophores of Vernonia herbacea (Vell.) Rusby, as influenced by temperature Rev. Bras. Bot.
DIAS-TAGLIACOZZO,GLÁUCIA M.; FIGUEIREDO-RIBEIRO,RITA DE CÁSSIA L.; CARVALHO,MARIA ANGELA M.; DIETRICH,SONIA M. C..
The influence of climatic variations on fructan content in tropical regions is not well known. The present study deals with the effects of temperature on fructan contents in rhizophores of plants of Vernonia herbacea, a native species from the Brazilian cerrado vegetation. Intact plants and fragmented rhizophores were subjected to different temperatures under natural and controlled environmental conditions. Rhizophores of plants in pre-dormant stage (aerial parts showing some yellowish leaves) presented higher fructan content at 5oC than those kept at 25oC, whereas in dormant plants (aerial parts absent) temperature treatments did not affect fructan contents. Fragmented rhizophores obtained from dormant plants presented higher levels of...

Fructan degradation and hydrolytic activity in tuberous roots of Viguiera discolor Baker (Asteraceae), a herbaceous species from the cerrado Rev. Bras. Bot.
Degasperi,Maria I.; Itaya,Nair M.; Buckeridge,Marcos S.; Figueiredo-Ribeiro,Rita De Cássia L..
Fructans of the inulin type are the major reserve carbohydrates in tuberous roots of Viguiera discolor, a perennial herb native to the cerrado. Changes in molecular mass of the polymer, followed by releasing free fructose suggested that hydrolysis could be related to the sprouting of the buds after the dormant period, when aerial parts of the plant are naturally absent. Excision of aerial parts resulted in the increase of fructan 1-exohydrolase (1-FEH) activity in tuberous roots after sprouting. 1-FEH was partially purified from this material by binding to ConA-Sepharose and the highest activity was detected at pH 5.4 and between 20 and 40 °C. Values of Km for V. discolor inulin could not be determined since no saturation was observed up to 10%. The study...

Cypsela or achene? Refining terminology by considering anatomical and historical factors Rev. Bras. Bot.
Marzinek,Juliana; De-Paula,Orlando Cavalari; Oliveira,Denise Maria Trombert.
The worry about the indiscriminate use of the terms cypsela and achene for the fruits of Asteraceae has been frequently detached by specialists in this family. The present work was developed aiming to verify the existence of arguments to justify the adoption of a term against the other. After historical and anatomical analysis, we concluded that there is technical basis to consider cypsela and achene as different types of fruits. For Asteraceae, the correct is to call cypsela; achenes are only derived from superior ovaries, as in Plumbaginaceae.

Development and some histochemical aspects of foliar glandular trichomes of Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bert. - Asteraceae Rev. Bras. Bot.
MONTEIRO,WALKYRIA ROSSI; CASTRO,MARÍLIA DE MORAES; MAZZONI-VIVEIROS,SOLANGE CRISTINA; MAHLBERG,PAUL GORDON.
The ten-celled biseriate glandular trichome of Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bert.-Asteraceae, found on both leaf surfaces, originates from a single protruding, protodermal cell undergoing an anticlinal division. A subsequent series of periclinal divisions, occurring in acropetal sequence, leads to the formation of the trichome, composed of five pairs of cells, one pair of basal cells, another of stalk cells and three pairs of secretory head cells. Developing, still two-celled glandular trichomes already occur on leaf primordia of the second pair (these primordia measuring, in some cases, ca. 0.30 mm in length), and most of the glandular trichomes are at the mature phase on very young, expanding leaves, for example on those of the sixth pair. The secretory...

CARVALHO,MARIA ANGELA MACHADO DE; PINTO,MARCOS MECCA; FIGUEIREDO-RIBEIRO,RITA DE CÁSSIA LEONE.
The underground organs of Vernonia herbacea (Vell.) Rusby, known as rhizophores, acumulate 80% of their dry mass as fructans of the inulin type. In view of the growing industrial use of fructans as dietetic and general food products, and of their medical application, the present investigation aimed at evaluating the effect of mineral fertilization and period of cultivation on the production of these carbohydrates in field trials. Plants used in the experiments were obtained by vegetative propagation from rhizophores collected from plants growing in natural areas of the cerrado, and cultivated for two years. Fertilization consisted of N:P2O5:K2O (80:200:150 kg.ha-1) plus 80 kg.ha-1 nitrogen as dressing. Soil fertilization did not stimulate biomass or inulin...

Anatomia de galhas de ambrosia em folhas de Baccharis concinna e Baccharis dracunculifolia (Asteraceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
ARDUIN,MARCOS; KRAUS,JANE ELIZABETH.

ABSTRACT Sunflower is a species with multiple potentialities and its yield can be affected by the presence of soluble salts in the soil, which is common in arid, semi-arid and irrigated regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of hydropriming as inducer of salinity tolerance in seeds and seedlings of sunflower, hybrid MG305CP. The germination tests were set with four replicates of 50 seeds per treatment, maintained in germinator at 30 ºC for ten days. To simulate salinity, sodium chloride diluted in distilled water was used at electrical conductivities of 0 (control), 4, 8, 12 and 16 dS m-1. On the tenth day, the number of normal seedlings was counted and the length and dry matter of shoots and roots were determined. Seedling fresh...

Vargas,Héctor A.; Mundaca,Enrique A..
ABSTRACT Bucculatrix mirnae Vargas and Moreira, 2012 (Lepidoptera, Bucculatricidae) is a micromoth native to the coastal valleys of the Atacama Desert previously known to occur only in the type locality of the Azapa Valley, close to sea level. Its immature stages are associated with the shrub Baccharis salicifolia (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers. (Asteraceae). We report data on the occurrence of B. mirnae found for the first time at 3500 m above sea level on the western slopes of the Andes mountains of northern Chile. In addition, Baccharis alnifolia Meyen & Walp. is recorded as a new host plant for B. mirnae. The implications of this finding for conservation in the arid western slopes of the Andes habitats in northern Chile are discussed.

Abstract Eugnosta azapaensis Vargas and Moreira, 2015 (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a micromoth native to the Atacama Desert whose larvae induce fusiform galls in shoots of Baccharis salicifolia (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers. (Asteraceae). The presence of this cecidogenous tortricid was previously recorded only from the type locality, the Azapa Valley, Arica Province, northern Chile. However, fusiform galls on shoots of B. salicifolia were recently found in Chaca, another coastal valley of the Atacama Desert. The adults obtained from these galls were preliminarily identified as E. azapaensis based on morphology. Subsequently, to assess an additional source of evidence for the taxonomic identification of E. azapaensis in this new locality, sequences of the DNA...

Host plant specificity of the moth species Glena mielkei (Lepidoptera, Geometridae) in northern Chile RChHN
Méndez-Abarca,Felipe; Méndez,Camila F; Mundaca,Enrique A.
BACKGROUND: Host plant specificity refers to the preference of insects for particular plant species that allow them to complete their life cycle. Moth species of the Geometridae family depend closely on the vegetation composition to complete their life cycles. In northern Chile, the Geometridae species Glena mielkei is the only species described of the genus Glena. So far, this species has only been associated to a single host plan species of the Asteraceae family, Trixis cacalioides. The aim of this study was to determine the suitability of five commonly occurring plant species of Asteraceae as hosts for G. mielkei. FINDINGS: We collected G. mielkei larvae from T. cacalioides plants occurring in the Azapa valley and reared them in the laboratory. We...
