Use of alternative media and different types of recipients in a laboratory culture of Ankistrodesmus gracilis (Reinsch) Korshikov (Chlorophyceae) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i3.8046 Biological Sciences
Sipauba-Tavares, Lucia Helena; UNESP; Millan, Rodrigo Ney; UNESP; Berchielli, Flávia de Almeida; UNESP; Braga, Francisco Manoel de Souza; UNESP.
A laboratory culture of Ankistrodesmus gracilis algae was evaluated by studying the biology of the species and its chemical composition in a traditional medium (CHU12) and in two alternative culture media, NPK (20-5-20) and macrophyte (Eichhornia crassipes) + NPK, in three different types of recipients (fiberglass, carboy and plastic bag). First peak in the growth curve of Ankistrodesmus gracilis occurred on the ninth day in macrophyte + NPK medium (74.16 x 105 cells mL-1) in a fiberglass recipient. However, highest density (p < 0.01) was reported in medium CHU12 (122.87 x 105 cells mL-1) in a plastic bag on the twelfth day. Cell density was over 70 x 105 cells mL-1 starting on the twelfth day. Growth rate of A. gracilis was similar (p > 0.05) in...

Correlation between fertility and levels of protein, sugar and free amino acids in seminal plasma of Nelore bulls Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Assumpção,T.I.; Torres Júnior,R.A.A.; Sousa,M.V.; Ricart,C.A.O..
Correlations between fertility and the concentrations of proteins, reducing sugars and 17 types of free amino acids in the seminal plasma of Nelore bulls were estimated. The samples were collected from 19 bulls that had high quality semen, according to physical and morphological analyses. The bulls had their fertility scores estimated based on the pregnancy of the females mated to them during three consecutive breeding seasons, either by artificial insemination or by natural breeding. A large variability in the concentrations of the molecules was observed among the samples and a significant correlation coefficient (r= 0.90) between levels of proteins and reducing sugars was estimated. None of the components showed a significant correlation with fertility.

Sugars, organic acids, and phenolic compounds of ancient grape cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.) from Igdir province of Eastern Turkey Biol. Res.
Eyduran,Sadiye Peral; Akin,Meleksen; Ercisli,Sezai; Eyduran,Ecevit; Maghradze,David.
BACKGROUND: The Eurasian grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is the most widely cultivated and economically important horticultural crop in the world. As a one of the origin area, Anatolia played an important role in the diversification and spread of the cultivated form V. vinifera ssp. vinifera cultivars and also the wild form V. vinifera ssp. sylvestris ecotypes. Although several biodiversity studies have been conducted with local cultivars in different regions of Anatolia, no information has been reported so far on the biochemical (organic acids, sugars, phenolic acids, vitamin C) and antioxidant diversity of local historical table V. vinifera cultivars grown in Igdir province. In this work, we studied these traits in nine local table grape cultivars viz....

Factors affecting biochemical composition of seston in an eutrophic reservoir (Pampulha Reservoir, Belo Horizonte, MG BJB
BOËCHAT,I. G.; GIANI,A..
Sestonic biochemical composition (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) may change with varying environmental fluctuations. These changes and the effects in the nutritional status of algae consists of an actual increasing source of interest. The aims of this work were to establish the relationship between biochemical composition of seston and 1) a range of physical, chemical and climatological factors, and 2) the natural fluctuation in the species composition in phytoplankton assemblages of the Pampulha Reservoir, an urban eutrophic lake located in Belo Horizonte, MG. Seasonal changes in the biochemical composition were observed in this study. None of the considered abiotic factors alone seem to affect the biochemical composition. So the effects could only...
