The occurrence of nitidulid beetles of the genus Carpophilus in the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) Some species of the genus Carpophilus (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) may act as pests of stored products like cocoabeans, peanuts, dried fruits like figs and dates, imported from tropical or subtropical countries. The aim of this study is to review the status of the seven recorded species in our country. Carpophilus sexpustulatus is a European species which occurs naturally in the Netherlands. It is the only species which has not been found in dried food stuffs. The other six species are imported with dried fruit, seeds and nuts. Of these C. marginellus seems to have succeeded in building up populations in the Netherlands and this species is... |

The molluscs of the brackish waters in the Netherlands (Mollusca) The Netherlands is a river delta rich in brackish waters. The organisms in these waters need to be adapted to extreme conditions, especially large fluctuations in chlorinity. However, several species occur optimally in this habitat. In this paper a review is presented of the molluscs living in brackish waters in the Netherlands. All available data from literature, collections, literature and databanks were compiled for this cause. In The Netherlands a large variety of brackish waters can be found, like lakes, canals, old creeks, shallow pools, lagoons, estuaries and dykes. This paper focusses on the waters on the landside of the dikes. All species found in these waters are treated here.... |

Three times does the trick, Chalcosyrphus eunotus back on the species list of the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Chalcosyrphus eunotus (Loew, 1873) has already been reported twice for the Netherlands, in 1958 and 1965. Both times re-examination of the specimens showed that it concerned Criorhina pachymera (Van der Goot 1969, Van der Linden 1988). On April 6, 2000 a male C. eunotus was caught near Elsloo (Limburg, the Netherlands). The distribution, flight period and habitat of C. eunotus are summarised, and many new European records are given. Chalcosyrphus eunotus usually occurs in deciduous forests (Quercus- Fraxinus-Ulmus) and is often found along the edges of small streams running through the forest (Speight 2000; this paper). The larvae were found... |

Overwintering habits of the land snail Vertigo angustior (Mollusca) During a mollusc survey in 2004 en 2005 in the province of Zuid-Holland special attention was paid to Vertigo angustior. The species was observed overwintering in large groups, up to hundreds of specimens together, between mosses (especially Brachythecium rutabulum (Hedw.) Schimp.) in small patches of poplar forest (Populus nigra and Populus alba) in the old dunes. As far as we know, this gregarious behaviour is described here for the first time. Many of the snails were found in a position where they had incorporated a moss leaf into the epiphragm closing the shell’s aperture, thereby achoring themselves to the vegetation, possibly for stability. |

Five new species of the hoverfly genus Cheilosia for the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Five species of the hoverfly genus Cheilosia are reported here for the first time for the fauna of the Netherlands. Keys are provided for the identification of the northwestern European species of the canicularis and proxima complexes. Cheilosia aerea Dufour, 1848 was only found in Zuid-Limburg, the most southeastern part of the Netherlands. Except for one specimen from 1943, all 14 specimens were collected in the 1990s. Cheilosia himantopus (Panzer, 1798) occurs in Zuid-Limburg and around Winterswijk in the east of the Netherlands. The species has the same distribution as C. canicularis (Panzer, 1801), with which it had been confused for a long time. Cheilosia... |

Does the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis feel well in the Netherlands (Hirudinea)? This paper provides information on the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis Linnaeus, 1758 particularly in The Netherlands. Although this species was common in The Netherlands in the 18th century, nowadays it is very rare. Most animals were found in waters on sandy soil (71%): dune pools (10%) and pleistocene sandy areas (61%), where it inhabits especially soft water moor and heathland pools. About 20% of the records originate from river areas, where the species can be found in breakthrough ponds and oxbow lakes. Only 9% of the records are from fen and clay areas. Records of single specimens are not proof of an established population, because these specimens could also... |

The genus Sphegina Meigen, 1822 in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) A survey of the genus Sphegina in the Netherlands is given. Some nomenclatural changes are indicated, which resulted in the following five species which are now known from the Netherlands: Sphegina clavata (Scopoli, 1763), Sphegina clunipes (Fallén, 1817), Sphegina elegans (Schummel, 1843), Sphegina sibirica Stackelberg, 1953 and Sphegina verecunda Collin, 1937. Some of the rarer species were confused with other species in the past or overlooked in the field. Several collections were re-examined and new records were gathered. This resulted in new distribution maps for the Dutch species and a description of the habitats. |
