SWINE '95 PART I: REFERENCE OF 1995 SWINE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AgEcon
Bush, Eric J..
This report is the first of a three-part release of national information from the second National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) swine study, the Swine '95 Grower/Finisher. The first national study, 1990 National Swine Survey, focused on farrowing sows and preweaning piglets. For the Swine '95 Study, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collaborated with Veterinary Services (VS) to select a producer sample that was statistically designed to provide inferences to the nation's swine population. Data for this report were collected from 1,477 producers in sixteen major pork production states, accounting for nearly 91 percent of the U.S. hog inventory and nearly three fourths of U.S. pork producers. By percent of pigs contained,...

Epidemiology of Avian Infectious Laryngotracheitis with Special Focus to South America: an update Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Parra,SHS; Nuñez,LFN; Ferreira,AJP.
ABSTRACT Avian Infectious laryngotracheitis (AILT) is a respiratory tract disease of great importance because it causes significant economic losses in the poultry industry around the world. It is caused by a Gallid herpesvirus type 1, a member of the genus Iltovirus. The target system for Avian Infectious Laryngotracheitis virus (AILTV) infections is the respiratory system, and the main organ in which the virus remains latent is the trigeminal ganglia. However, the virus has demonstrated tropism for other organs besides the respiratory tract. The main transmission routes are ocular and respiratory. Infected birds with clinical symptoms are main sources of transmission, but birds with latent infections, litter, and contaminated fomites may also transmit the...

Infectious laryngotracheitis: a review Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Hidalgo,H.
Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) herpesvirus continues to cause outbreaks of respiratory disease in chickens world-wide. Sporadic cases of ILT occur in all classes of birds, including hobby/show/game chickens, broilers, heavy breeders, and commercial laying hens. These epornitics of ILT tend to occur where there are large populations of naïve, unvaccinated birds, i.e., in concentrated areas of broiler production. ILT virus can be transmitted through (a) chickens with acute upper respiratory tract disease, (b) latently infected "carrier" fowls, and (c) fomites and contaminated persons. Chicken flocks which are endemic infected with ILT virus occur only in some regions of countries or even in particular multiple-age production farms. In these cases...

The Effects of Two Different Cleaning and Disinfection Programs on Broiler Performance and Microbiological Status of Broiler Houses Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Burbarelli,MFC; Merseguel,CEB; Ribeiro,PAP; Lelis,KD; Polycarpo,GV; Carão,ACP; Bordin,RA; Fernandes,AM; Souza,RLM; Moro,MEG; Albuquerque,R.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of two cleaning and disinfection programs on broiler performance and on the microbiological status of the facilities. This trial was an observational study of comparative character. Two experiments were conducted, with 960 birds each. Both experiments were carried out in a positive-pressure broiler house. Broilers were distributed in pens equipped with a bell drinker and a tube feeder each. In the first experiment, new wood shavings were used as litter material, and in the second, reused wood shavings were used. Two treatments with16 replicates of 30 birds each were evaluated. The regular treatment consisted of dry and wet organic matter removal, followed by washing. The European...

Design and validation of a mobile air filter testing laboratory for animal agricultural applications CIGR Journal
Smith, Benjamin; Ramirez, Brett; Hoff, Steven; Harmon, Jay; Stinn, John.
The US swine industry is shifting towards filtered fresh-air ventilation systems that use pleated filters to improve breeding herd health and reduce airborne disease outbreak frequency. Loaded filters reduce airflow causing a poor environment and elevated energy use. Typical axial fans cannot efficiently maintain the rated differential pressure (DP; 100 Pa) for pleated filters; hence, a lower design filter DP (37 Pa) is used and consequently, more filters are required to achieve design maximum ventilation. Large, common filter banks for multiple staged fans presents significant challenges in using continuous DP measurement to assess filter life, making it impossible to separate filter loading DP from overall airflow DP. A mobile air filter testing (MAFT)...

Implementation of a geographic information system (GIS) for the planning of beekeeping in the west region of Paraná Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAMARGO,SIMONE C.; GARCIA,REGINA C.; FEIDEN,ARMIN; VASCONCELOS,EDMAR S. DE; PIRES,BRUNO G.; HARTLEBEN,ALCEU M.; MORAES,FERNANDA J. DE; OLIVEIRA,LUAN DE; GIASSON,JUYVERSON; MITTANCK,EDUARDO S.; GREMASCHI,JEFERSON R.; PEREIRA,DIANA J..
This study aimed to develop a Geographic Information System (GIS), for storage of information and geographic location of apiaries in eight counties in western Paraná; study the local flora; the land used; and the honey productivity in the harvest of 2010 in two of these areas: Marechal Cândido Rondon and Santa Helena. In order to do so we used the software SPRING, delimiting a radius of action of bees of three kilometers around the apiaries. We interviewed and registered 126 beekeepers with 383 apiaries. By using the images we selected areas with greater and lower overlap of hives in Marechal Cândido Rondon (144 and 44 hives, respectively) and Santa Helena (165 and 40 hives, respectively), in a three kilometers radius, selecting 15 colonies in each area,...
