Seasonal variation of physical, chemical and sensory characteristics of sea bream (Sparus aurata) reared under intensive conditions in Southern Europe ArchiMer
Cardinal, Mireille; Cornet, Josiane; Donnay-moreno, Claire; Gouygou, Jean-paul; Berge, Jean-pascal; Rocha, E.; Soares, S.; Escorcio, C.; Borges, P.; Valente, L. M. P..
This study describes the variability of important quality traits in gilthead sea bream produced under intensive conditions in Southern Europe and purchased in a French market (Nantes). Chemical, sensory and histological characteristics were performed on 18 samples delivered over a year. All fish presented far lower dioxin and DL-PCBs or heavy metals concentrations than the maximum limit level set by EC Regulation, being totally safe for human consumption. Fat content and nutritional values reflected by n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) levels were parameters with high variability according to the season or the fish farm. Values of n-3 PUFA ranged from 0.9% to 8.6% and those of n-6 PUFA from 9.3% to 16.6%, corresponding to a respective...

Daily variations of the saccular endolymph and plasma compositions in the turbot Psetta maxima: relationship with the diurnal rhythm in otolith formation ArchiMer
Edeyer, Anaick; De Pontual, Helene; Payan, P; Troadec, Herve; Severe, Armelle; Mayer-gostan, N.
We studied the circadian variations of the ionic composition ([Na+], [K+], [Cl-]), total CO2 ([tot CO2]), and protein concentration ([protein]) in the plasma and endolymph in the distal and proximal sides of the sacculus in the turbot Psetta maxima. Daily variations in total plasma calcium ([tot Ga]) were also recorded. Significant diurnal fluctuations occurred in most parameters and the spatial heterogeneity of the endolymph composition was maintained throughout a 24 h period. The main parameters implicated in otolith calcification, endolymph [tot CO2] and endolymph [protein], fluctuated diurnally, [tot CO2] was highest and [protein] lowest at night; the relative concentrations were reversed during the day. The inverse, alternating relationship of maximal...

Antiviral Activities of Sulfated Polysaccharides Isolated from Sphaerococcus coronopifolius (Rhodophytha, Gigartinales) and Boergeseniella thuyoides (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) ArchiMer
Bouhlal, Rhimou; Haslin, Camille; Chermann, Jean-claude; Colliec-jouault, Sylvia; Sinquin, Corinne; Simon, Gaelle; Cerantola, Stephane; Riadi, Hassane; Bourgougnon, Nathalie.
Water-soluble sulfated polysaccharides isolated from two red algae Sphaerococcus coronopifolius (Gigartinales, Sphaerococcaceae) and Boergeseniella thuyoides (Ceramiales, Rhodomelaceae) collected on the coast of Morocco inhibited in vitro replication of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) at 12.5 mu g/mL. In addition, polysaccharides were capable of inhibiting the in vitro replication of Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) on Vero cells values of EC(50) of 4.1 and 17.2 mu g/mL, respectively. The adsorption step of HSV-1 to the host cell seems to be the specific target for polysaccharide action. While for HIV-1, these results suggest a direct inhibitory effect on HIV-1 replication by controlling the appearance of the new generations of virus and...

The potential of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure the chemical composition of aquaculture solid waste ArchiMer
Lopes Galasso, Helena; Callier, Myriam; Bastianelli, Denis; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Aliaume, Catherine.
In aquaculture, it is extremely important to determine the composition of fish farm waste to evaluate its potential impacts and to improve its reuse. Near-infra red spectroscopy (NIRS), an alternative to standard chemical analytical techniques, is a quick non-invasive method to assess physical and chemical composition, reducing the cost of routine analysis. We developed NIRS calibration models for organic matter (OM), total organic carbon (TOC), total organic nitrogen (TON), the carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N), total phosphorus (TP) and the lipid content of marine fish particulate waste. To obtain a wide range of compositions of fish waste, decomposition time, feed loss, and inter-specific variations were taken into account. The NIRS calibration models were...

Hydrothermal Vents: Oases at Depth ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
The synthesis of organic molecules in hydrothermal fluids raises the question of what role hydrothermal vents may have played in the emergence of life on Earth. These deep‐sea ecosystems were most likely protected from extreme conditions at the surface (meteor showers and ultraviolet radiation). Since the middle of the 19th century, scientists have questioned the position of deep‐sea animals in the evolution of marine fauna, in the hope to discover the missing link, i.e. the species or group that may have survived mass extinctions in this protected and stable environment. This chapter discusses the geology and geochemistry of hydrothermal systems, microbial chemosynthesis, symbioses and trophic chains, and fauna at different spatial scales. Fauna...

Evolution du phytoplancton dans des bassins de culture ArchiMer
Nival, Paul; Malara, G.; Lelong, P.; Cellario, C.; Charra, R.; Riva, A..
The concentration of chlorophyll a in large out-door continuous culture was analysed in spring 1977 and 1978, and autumn - winter 1977-1978. The growth of marine phytoplankton in springsl977 is analysed with more details and shows three phases : - first, the diatoms (especially Skeletonema costatum) grow rapidely (27/4 to 3/5). The growth rate estimated by the chlorophyll measurements is 1.36 day“1. - then (3/5 to.13/5) the concentration of chlorophyll remains more or less constant (23.611.2 mg/m3) as well as the concentration of particulate organic matter. - at the end of the experiment (13/5 to 20/5) the concentration of chlorophyll falls as soon as Skeletonema costatum decrease in number. The declin of the phytoplankton biomass is followed by an...

Two different biomasses (100 g multiplied by m super(-2) and 1 kg multiplied by m super(-2)) of oysters were put in identical sea-water ponds, thus leading to different trophic conditions, corresponding to rearing techniques. Changes in growth, biochemical composition and sexual maturation were recorded for two age groups. The first one included 9 month-old oysters and the second one 21 month-old oysters, at the beginning of the experiment. For both age groups, significant differences were observed in growth and biochemical composition. Lipids were accumulated faster for the lower biomass. However, the only difference concerning glycogen was observed on the older oysters. They showed a peak at the lowest biomass and a decrease at the larger biomass. Sexual...

Chemical composition of corals in Saudi Red Sea Coast ArchiMer
Al-lihaibi, Ss; Al-sofyani, Aa; Niaz, Gr.
Three species of corals Stylophora pistillata, Lobophyllia corymbosa and Echinopora gemmacea were collected from Sharm Obhur to study their chemical composition. This information was important in the investigation of their metabolic pathways and their mode of feeding. The concentrations of amino acids in these species were 9.37, 21.35 and 3.09 mg.g(-1) dry weight of coral respectively. Plant pigments were highest in E. gemmacea followed by S. pistillata and then by L. corymbosa. Lipid concentrations in S. pistillata, L. corymbosa and E. gemmacea were 1.90, 8.58 and 1.32 mg.g(-1) of total coral respectively. The fatty acid methyl esters were analyzed in these species and the most abundant saturated acids were 16:0 and 18:0, while unsaturated acids included...

Effect of high-level fish meal replacement by plant proteins in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) on growth and body/fillet quality traits ArchiMer
De Francesco, M; Parisi, G; Perez Sanchez, J; Gomez Requeni, P; Medale, Francoise; Kaushik, Sadasivam; Mecatti, M; Poli, B.
Juvenile gilthead sea bream (initial body weight ca. 100 g) were reared in an indoor flow through marine water system for 1 year. Fish were fed two isoenergetic [19.2 kJ g−1 dry matter (DM)] and isoproteic (426 g kg−1 DM) diets either based on fish meal (diet FM) or on a mixture of plant protein sources (diet PP), replacing 75% of fish meal protein. The growth trial was conducted in duplicate, two tanks for each dietary treatment. Growth performance and feed utilization were registered. Fillet quality parameters were evaluated and sensory analyses on cooked fillet were performed. Both groups had similar weight gain and specific growth rates. Feed intake was higher in sea bream fed diet FM (0.48 versus 0.44), while feed efficiency and...

Compositions chimiques et énergétiques des boutargues du mulet <Mugil cephalus> et de la courbine argyrosomus regius en Mauritanie OceanDocs
El Cafsi, M.; Beddih, M.L.O.A.; Marzouk, B; Zarrouk, K..
