Influence of mesoscale eddies on biological production in the Mozambique Channel: Several contrasted examples from a coupled ocean-biogeochemistry model ArchiMer
Jose, Yonss; Aumont, Olivier; Machu, Eric; Penven, Pierrick; Moloney, C. L.; Maury, Olivier.
The impact of mesoscale activity on phytoplankton and nutrient distribution in the Mozambique Channel was simulated by coupling a biogeochemical model (PISCES) with a regional oceanic model (ROMS). Examples of the effects of eddies on the biogeochemistry of the Mozambique Channel are presented to illustrate the complexity of the system. In the model, several cyclonic eddies were found with low concentrations of chlorophyll at their cores, which contrasts with previous studies in the open ocean. In addition, several anticyclonic eddies were simulated with high concentrations of chlorophyll at their cores. Phytoplankton growth within these mesoscale features (both cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies) occurred in response to nutrient injection into the euphotic...

Overview of eutrophication indicators to assess environmental status within the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive ArchiMer
Ferreira, Joao G.; Andersen, Jesper H.; Borja, Angel; Bricker, Suzanne B.; Camp, Jordi; Da Silva, Margarida Cardoso; Garces, Esther; Heiskanen, Anna-stiina; Humborg, Christoph; Ignatiades, Lydia; Lancelot, Christiane; Menesguen, Alain; Tett, Paul; Hoepffner, Nicolas; Claussen, Ulrich.
In 2009, following approval of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC), the European Commission (EC) created task groups to develop guidance for eleven quality descriptors that form the basis for evaluating ecosystem function. The objective was to provide European countries with practical guidelines for implementing the MSFD, and to produce a Commission Decision that encapsulated key points of the work in a legal framework. This paper presents a review of work carried out by the eutrophication task group, and reports our main findings to the scientific community. On the basis of an operational, management-oriented definition, we discuss the main methodologies that could be used for coastal and marine eutrophication assessment....

Apports de nutriments et développement phytoplanctonique en baie de Seine ArchiMer
Aminot, Alain; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Andrieux Loyer, Francoise; Kerouel, Roger; Cann, Philippe.
As part of the Programme National d'Oceanographie Cotiere, the nutrient dynamics of the Bay of Seine were studied between 1992 and 1994 in order to complement work on ecological modelling. Firstly, the River Seine's nutrient fluxes were established: 80 000-130 000 t a(-1) of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, 6 400-8 400 t a(-1) of dissolved phosphorus and 20 000-77 000 t a(-1) of dissolved silicium. Estuarine processes were taken into account. Consequences of nutrient loading for the bay were then evaluated at the pelagic level (nutrient and chlorophyll enrichments) and the benthic level (distribution of various phosphorus fractions in superficial sediments). The large continental inputs always induce concentration gradients in the water from the mouth of the...

UPLC-MSE Profiling of Phytoplankton Metabolites: Application to the Identification of Pigments and Structural Analysis of Metabolites in Porphyridium purpureum ArchiMer
Juin, Camille; Bonnet, Antoine; Nicolau, Elodie; Berard, Jean-baptiste; Devillers, Romain; Thiery, Valerie; Cadoret, Jean-paul; Picot, Laurent.
A fast and high-resolution UPLC-MSE analysis was used to identify phytoplankton pigments in an ethanol extract of Porphyridium purpureum (Pp) devoid of phycobiliproteins. In a first step, 22 standard pigments were analyzed by UPLC-MSE to build a database including retention time and accurate masses of parent and fragment ions. Using this database, seven pigments or derivatives previously reported in Pp were unequivocally identified: beta,beta-carotene, chlorophyll a, zeaxanthin, chlorophyllide a, pheophorbide a, pheophytin a, and cryptoxanthin. Minor amounts of Divinyl chlorophyll a, a chemotaxonomic pigment marker for prochlorophytes, were also unequivocally identified using the database. Additional analysis of ionization and fragmentation patterns...

Suppressing and enhancing effects of mesoscale dynamics on biological production in the Mozambique Channel ArchiMer
Jose, Y. S.; Penven, P.; Aumont, O.; Machu, E.; Moloney, C. L.; Shillington, F.; Maury, O..
We used a coupled physical-biogeochemical model to investigate how the strong eddy activity typical of the Mozambique Channel affects biological production. A numerical experiment was carried out, in which mesoscale dynamics were suppressed by cancelling the nonlinear terms for horizontal momentum in the Naviers-Stokes equation. Mesoscale dynamics were found to be responsible for (1) increased offshore production in the Mozambique Channel as a result of net eddy-induced offshore transport of nutrient-rich coastal waters; (2) decreased shelf production along the central Mozambican and south-west Madagascar coast caused by a reduction in nutrient availability related to the net eddy-induced lateral transport of nutrients; (3) increased coastal production...

Plankton communities of the South Atlantic anticyclonic gyre ArchiMer
Piontkovski, Sa; Landry, Mr; Finenko, Zz; Kovalev, Av; Williams, R; Gallienne, Cp; Mishonov, Av; Skryabin, Va; Tokarev, Yn; Nikolsy, Vn.
Data collected during cruises of the Former Soviet Union (in 1963-1989) and the British Atlantic meridional transect program (in 1995-1999) were used to analyse macroscale patterns in phyto- and zooplankton biomass, size structure, species diversity, chlorophyll a, and plankton bioluminescence in the macroscale anticyclonic gyre of the South Atlantic Ocean. The spatial pattern of bioluminescence intensity was in good agreement with that of remotely sensed (CZCS) chlorophyll a, phosphate, salinity, and copepod species diversity index distributions especially in terms of geographic inclinations of the isolines, both associated with the north-westward pattern off the South equatorial current. Among the 416 copepod species recorded in samples, 51 species were...

In situ estimations of uptake and release of material by oysters in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron (France) ArchiMer
Zurburg, Wouter; Smaal, Aad; Heral, Maurice; Dankers, Norbert.
The uptake and release of material by oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in the intertidal zone were estimated in situ in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron (France) in spring and autumn. 10 m long plexiglass tunnels were placed over small tables with bags containing oysters or empty oyster shells (control). Although in the very turbid conditions of the water column sedimentation of suspended particulate material could be observed in control experiments, higher fluxes (uptake) of seston, POC and PON and especially chlorophyll occurred in the presence of live animals. Release of dissolved nutrients was not evident from the tunnel with oysters, which is in contrast with studies in other areas with bivalves. This is ascribed to limited mineralization of biodeposits as an...

Use of SeaWiFS data for light availability and parameter estimation of a phytoplankton production model of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Huret, Martin; Gohin, Francis; Delmas, Daniel; Lunven, Michel; Garcon, Véronique.
Processing SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor) data provides useful information for the observation and modelling of the phytoplankton production of the Bay of Biscay. Empirical algorithms allow the retrieval of chlorophyll a and non-living Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) concentrations. These data are used to constrain a coupled 3D physical-biogeochemical model of the Bay of Biscay continental shelf Two issues are investigated, depending on the variable used, to constrain the winter to spring phytoplankton production for the year 2001. First, SPM data is used as forcing data to correct the corresponding state variable of our model. This allows the realistic simulation of the light limited bloom at the end of February 2001, as observed with...

Variabilité hydrologique et biologique du golfe du Lion. II. Productivité sur le bord interne du courant ArchiMer
Conan, P; Pujo-pay, M; Raimbault, P; Leveau, M.
An estimation of the annual productivity in the Gulf of Lions has been made in the 0-100 m layer using a Let-Go system, with monthly measurements at a fixed station. A value of 140 to 150 g m(-2) a(-1) of C is found, of which around 75 % occurs in the upper 50 m. The seasonal production is described according to three distinct patterns during the two hydrological seasons: (1) variable production in winter; (2) surface bloom in late winter; (3) homogeneous and mean production in summer with a clear Deep Chlorophyll Maximum. The hydrological winter phase represented 60 % of total annual production. The seasonal duality of the hydrodynamic system and the mesoscale variations of the Northern Mediterranean Current account for the variability and the evolution...

Seston dynamics and bivalve feeding in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron (France) ArchiMer
Zurburg, Wouter; Smaal, Aad; Heral, Maurice; Dankers, Norbert.
Within the framework of an investigation into the carrying capacity of the Bay of Marennes-Oléron (France) for bivalve culture, the in situ uptake of suspended particulate material by oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and mussels (Mytilus edulis) was determined in experiments with benthic ecosystem tunnels. Very high fluctuations in seston quantity and quality were observed within and between tidal cycles. The percentage of organic carbon was inversely related to seston quantity at low concentrations. Organic carbon was diluted by resuspension of material rich in inorganic matter. At high seston concentrations a constant level of about 2% organic carbon was found. The CIN ratio was relatively constant throughout the seasons and fairly low (6.5 to 8.4). Owing to...

Basil conservation affected by cropping season, harvest time and storage period PAB
Silva,Franceli da; Santos,Ricardo Henrique Silva; Andrade,Nélio José de; Barbosa,Luiz Cláudio Almeida; Casali,Vicente Wagner Dias; Lima,Renato Ribeiro de; Passarinho,Ricardo Vaz de Melo.
Fresh basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is used in food, phytotherapic industry, and in traditional therapeutic, due to its essential oil content and composition. Nevertheless basil can not be kept for long periods after harvest and its quality can be reduced. This work aimed to assess the influence of the season and harvest time in the postharvest conservation of basil stored for different periods. Basil was harvested at 8 am and 4 pm both in August/1999 and January/2000. Cuttings were conditioned in PVC packages and stored for 3, 6, and 9 days. During storage, chlorophyll content, essential oil content and composition were determined as well as microbiological analyses were carried out. Harvest season and the days of storage influenced the final content of...

Physiological and morphological responces of Brachiaria spp. to flooding PAB
DIAS-FILHO,MOACYR BERNARDINO; CARVALHO,CLÁUDIO JOSÉ REIS DE.
The physiological and morphological responses of the forage grasses Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, B. decumbens and B. humidicola were compared for plants grown in pots under flooding and well-drained conditions for 14 days. Flooding reduced specific leaf area and biomass allocation to roots in all species and enhanced leaf senescence in B. brizantha and B. decumbens. Relative growth rate was reduced by flooding in B. brizantha and B. decumbens, but not in B. humidicola.Leaf elongation rate was unaffected by flooding in B. decumbens and B. humidicola, but declined in B. brizantha since the first day of flooding. Net photosynthesis and leaf chlorophyll content were reduced by flooding in B. brizantha; however, no flooding effect could be detected in the...

Physiological changes during postharvest senescence of broccoli PAB
Finger,Fernando Luiz; Endres,Laurício; Mosquim,Paulo Roberto; Puiatti,Mário.
The objective of this work was to determine the early physiological changes throughout shelf life of fresh broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica) cv. Piracicaba Precoce at 25ºC and relative humidity of 96% in the dark until complete senescence. Head inflorescences showed lack of turgidity and commercial value when weight loss reached up to 5%, coinciding with 48 hour after harvest. Chlorophyll content was stable until 24 hours after harvesting; afterwards, an intense degradation phase took place. At 72 hours, total head yellowing was observed when chlorophyll content dropped to 30% of its initial content. Peroxidase activity increased by 1.4 fold during the first six hours, dropping to its lowest level approximately 24 hours after harvesting....

Sodium sulfate exposure slows growth of native pecan seedlings Phyton
Moreno-Izaguirre,E; Ojeda-Barrios,D; Avila-Quezada,G; Guerrero-Prieto,V; Parra-Quezada,R; Ruiz-Anchondo,T.
Pecan [Carya illinoensis (Wanngenh) K. Koch] is one of the most important nut crops in arid and semiarid regions of Mexico. Here, most pecans are grown in saline soils having poor permeability which are further degraded by the use of low-quality irrigation water. Salinity adversely affects both pecan nut quality and yield. Little work has been done to explore the physiological effects of salinity on native pecan trees. Here we examine physiological changes determined by exposure of pecan seedlings to sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) at four concentrations: 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 mg/L applied twice weekly over a 70 d period. Control plants were similarly irrigated but with water free of Na2SO4. The aim was to identify and quantify the putative salinity damage to...

Influence of wheat straw and rhizosphere on seed germination, early seedling growth and bio-chemical attributes of Trianthema portulacastrum Planta Daninha
Khaliq,A; Matloob,A; Aslam,F; Bismillah Khan,M.
Decomposing wheat (Triticum aestivum) straw and rhizosphere-infested soil were evaluated for their suppressive activity against horse purslane (Trianthema portulacastrum), a noxious summer weed in Pakistan. Two separate pot studies were carried out. Wheat straw was incorporated at 4, 6 and 8 g kg-1 soil five days before the sowing of horse purslane. Pots without straw incorporation were maintained as control. In a second study, soil was taken from 15 and 30 cm depths from a previously cropped wheat field immediately after its harvest and was used as growing medium. Soil from an intentionally uncropped area of the same field was used as control. Suppressive activity was measured in terms of germination dynamics, seedling growth, and biochemical attributes...
