Studies in South-Occidental Amazon: contribution to the knowledge of Brazilian Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i2.9195 Biological Sciences
Vieira, Lisandro Juno Soares; Universidade Federal do Acre; Rosin, Gisele Cristina; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Takeda, Alice Michyio; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Lopes, Maria Rosélia Marques; Universidade Federal do Acre; Sousa, Daniel Silva de; Universidade Federal do Acre.
Chironomidae (Diptera) are a diverse and large group of small flies, whose larvae inhabit nearly every possible niche in most freshwater aquatic ecosystems. The Acre river is an important affluent of the Purus river. Our objective was to contribute to the knowledge of Chironomidae in this region by making the first survey of Chironomidae composition in the Acre river (Amazon Basin), and relate its distribution to physical and chemical variables. Samples were collected at three sites using a modified Petersen grab. A grain size analysis showed heterogeneity between sampling sites. Eighteen morphospecies of Chironomidae larvae were recorded. In site 2, there was higher density of Chironomidae. Higher richness was observed in site 1, and the composition of...

Rotifer community structure along a stretch under the influence of dams in the Upper Paraná River floodplain Biological Sciences
Mantovano, Tatiane; Arrieira, Rodrigo Leite; Schwind, Leilane Talita Fatoreto; Bonecker, Claudia Costa; Lansac-Tôha, Fábio Amodêo.
The construction of reservoirs imposes substantial impact on freshwater ecosystems and changes the ecological aspects of the lotic system downstream of dams. We hypothesized an increasing dissimilarity between communities in the sampling sites according to increasing distance from the Porto Primavera Dam. In addition, we expect that the rotifer community in the last sampling site will be influenced more by environmental variables related to trophic status. Samplings were conducted under the water surface of ten sites on the Paraná River in August 2013. Environmental variables were also determined. The highest number of taxa belonged to families Brachionidae, Lecanidae and Trichocercidae. The most abundant species was observed to Synchaeta oblonga,...

Carvalho,Gabriela Cristina de; Ceretti-Junior,Walter; Barrio-Nuevo,Karolina Morales; Wilk-da-Silva,Ramon; Christe,Rafael Oliveira; Paula,Marcia Bicudo de; Vendrami,Daniel Pagotto; Multini,Laura Cristina; Evangelista,Eduardo; Camargo,Amanda Alves; Souza,Laura Freitas; Wilke,André Barretto Bruno; Medeiros-Sousa,Antonio Ralph; Marrelli,Mauro Toledo.
Abstract Many parks in the city of São Paulo contain remnants of Atlantic Forest. Of the 30 municipal parks in the South of the city, we investigated two in this study (Santo Dias Park and Shangrilá Park) in order to survey their mosquito fauna and investigate the presence of potential bioindicators of environmental conditions and vectors of human pathogens. Mosquitoes were collected monthly between March 2011 and February 2012 using aspirators, Shannon and CDC traps for adult mosquitoes and larval dippers and suction samplers for immature forms. Sampling effort was evaluated by plotting a species accumulation curve, and total richness was estimated using the first-order jackknife. To compare the diversity between the two parks Shannon and Simpson...

Flood-mediated use of habitat by large and midsized mammals in the Brazilian Pantanal Biota Neotropica
Lázari,Patrick Ricardo De; Santos-Filho,Manoel dos; Canale,Gustavo Rodrigues; Graipel,Maurício Eduardo.
The Brazilian Pantanal comprises a mosaic of forest and field environments harbouring a rich community of large and midsized mammals that are adapted to the annual hydrological cycle. Here we evaluated richness and composition of large and midsized mammals inhabiting forested and open habitats affected by yearly floods in the Pantanal in Cáceres from October 2009 to September 2010. We compared these communities in marshes, dry forests and riparian forests based on 640 camera-traps.nights, sights, tracks, faecal samples and interviews. We also compared results in a private land (Descalvados Farm) and in a protected area (Taiamã Ecological Station). In total, we sampled 26 large and midsized mammals, including five threatened and two near threatened species....

Fish fauna from Sapucaí-Mirim River, tributary of Grande River, upper Paraná River basin, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Oliveira,Alexandre Kannebley de; Garavello,Julio Cesar; Cesario,Vinicius Vendramini; Cardoso,Rodrigo Torres.
The fish species composition of Sapucaí-Mirim River is herein reported and discussed in the faunistic context of Grande and Paranaíba river basins, both formers of the Paraná River. The Sapucaí-Mirim is an important tributary of this hydrographic system, flowing to the left bank of Grande River in a region occupied by the reservoir of the Porto Colombia hydroelectric power plant, at São Paulo state northeastern region, in southeastern Brazil. The poorly known fish diversity of the Sapucaí-Mirim River is presented on basis of sampling efforts conducted in the main river channel and three creeks located at the mid and lower sections of the basin, allowing comparisons of the fish fauna of these two sections in the light of available information of fish...

How many species of drosophila (Diptera, Drosophilidae) remain to be described in the forests of São Paulo, Brazil?: species lists of three forest remnants Biota Neotropica
Medeiros,Hermes Fonsêca de; Klaczko,Louis Bernard.
This paper describes the composition and abundance of Drosophila species found in three forest remnants in the State of São Paulo. A well-standardized sampling procedure applied on four collecting trips to the same sites on four areas resulted on 944 samples. All males collected were identified by analyses of the genitalia, this being the only data set used. One hundred and twenty five species were detected amongst the 29,289 males analyzed. From them 57,6% could be identified as described species. Thirteen of the species found were absent from the previous species list for the state of São Paulo State, thus represent an increase of 13% on the number known. We argue that the majority of the 53 unidentified species are in fact undescribed. The sites studied...

Variation of density, species composition and dominance of Rotifers at a shallow tropical reservoir (Broa reservoir, SP, Brazil) in a short scale time BJB
RODRÍGUEZ,M. P.; MATSUMURA-TUNDISI,T..
Rotifers are the predominant group of zooplankton found in the majority of reservoirs, constituting more than 60% of the total zooplankton present. Being opportunistic organisms, they easily adapt to changes in environmental conditions, and it is therefore difficult to establish a constant level of composition and occurrence of a species in specific areas at specific times. In order to establish how changes in composition and predominance of a species occurs within a dynamic system, the daily variation in the total density of rotifers and that of the dominant species were studied at short intervals during a period of 20 days at Lobo (Broa) reservoir. Filinia pejleri and Keratella americana were the predominant species, making up 64.3% of the total...

Evaluation of the functionality of bread loaves prepared with quinoa flakes through biological tests BJPS
Gewehr,Márcia Flach; Pagno,Carlos Henrique; Danelli,Daiane; Melo,Lívia Marchi de; Flôres,Simone Hickmann; Jong,Erna Vogt de.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate quinoa flakes and bread prepared with the pseudocereal with regard to nutritional aspects by determining chemical composition, content of tocopherols and fatty acid composition as well as to possible beneficial effects in Wistar rats given commercial feed supplemented or not with quinoa flakes and cholesterol. The following parameters were determined: weight gain, food intake, liver weight, fat in liver and lipid profile in blood and liver. The results showed that processing affected the nutritional characteristics of bread because there was a significant increase in dietary fiber content but reduction in soluble fiber. Increased fiber did not influence food intake or weight gain. Regarding fat in liver of...

Cooking ways on composition of intramuscular phospholipid fatty acids of inra rabbit Ciência Rural
Shan,Xue.
ABSTRACT: The effect of boiling, microwaving and aluminium (Al) foil-baking on composition of intramuscular phospholipid fatty acids of Inra rabbit was evaluated. Results showed that, the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)(e.g. C18:2n-6, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3, C22:5n-3 and C22:6n-3) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA)(e.g. C18:1n-7 and C18:1n-9) of treated longissimus dorsi muscle (LD) decreased, whilst the proportion of saturated (SFA)(e.g. C16:0 and C18:0) and n-6/n-3 value increased during cooking. Among the three treatments, microwaving can do better to stop the unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) being destroyed than boiling and Al foil-baking. However, boiling treatment did more serious damage to PUFA portion. Even so, the n-6/n-3 values of...
