Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Capps, Oral, Jr..
Models are developed to measure the effect of socioeconomic factors on the probability of consuming fish and shellfish in both the away from home and at home markets. Factors that significantly affect the likelihood of eating fish and shellfish at home include urbanization, region, race, ethnicity, age, diet status and income. On the other hand, region, employment, diet status, household size, age and income significantly affect the likelihood of eating fish and shellfish away from home.

2000 OUTLOOK OF THE U.S. AND WORLD SUGAR MARKETS AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 1999-2009 by using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to be strong for the next ten years after the current over supply is reduced. World demand for sugar is expected to grow faster than world supply, resulting in gradually increasing Caribbean sugar prices from 6.55 cents/lb in 1999 to 12.3 cents/lb in 2009. The U.S. wholesale price of sugar is projected to increase from 20.69 cents/lb in 2000 to 28.84 cents/lb in 2009 if the United States maintains its sugar programs. World...

Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 2003-2013 period using the Global Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to improve for the next 10 years. World demand for both common and durum wheat are expected to grow faster than world production, resulting in gradual increases in prices of the wheat varieties. However, the higher price levels experienced in 2002 and 2003 due to weather conditions will not be maintained in the short-term. World trade volumes of both classes of wheat are expected to expand, but trade volume of durum wheat...

Über die Rekonstruktion der Handlung „Einkaufen im Bioladen“ – ein Beispiel für qualitative Sozialforschung nach der „Grounded Theory“ AgEcon
Helmle, Simone.
This article presents a study about the symbolic significance of shopping in the organic store. The data are based on autobiographic reports and analyzed using grounded theory. The result is a concept with finding of identity and well-being as the main categories. According to these categories, hypotheses about the structures of personal values were proposed. Such structures are the perception of an alternative lifestyle as something normal, sympathetic ideas towards farm production and ideas about selfsufficiency. A strong point of the analysis is the abundance of empirical material, but the small number of cases and the subjects strong philosophical nature are restrictive.

2010 Outlook of the U.S. and World Sugar Markets, 2009-2019 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2009-2019 using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to remain stable over the next ten years in spite of the 2007-08 increase in world oil prices. That increase in oil price caused an increase in the conversion of sugar into ethanol in Brazil, while other exporting countries increased their production of sugar in response to higher sugar prices. Sugar prices remained strong in 2009 as the world’s economies recover slowly from the recession. World demand for sugar is expected to...

Domestic Supply and Consumption Patterns of Coarse Grains, Pulses, Roots and Tuber Crops in Asia and the Pacific AgEcon
Rural poor populations in Asia and the Pacific live mainly in disadvantaged areas, isolated, lacking infrastructure, with harsh climatic and ecological conditions. Coarse grains, pulses, roots and tubers (CGPRT crops) often offer one of the limited options for development under these circumstances. Information on the situation of these crops in national economies is limited and becomes a constraint in the design of pro-poor measures for this target group with an objective of poverty alleviation. This monograph presents and analyzes long-term trends and the evolution of CGPRT crops in ESCAP countries. Its comprehensive, yet detailed, coverage of crops and countries make it a reference for researchers, students and analysts involved with the development of...

Welfare Effects of Demographic Changes in a Ramsey Growth Model AgEcon
Stiller, Silvia.
Population ageing and decline are inescapable facts for Germany which are expected to have - especially due to the labour force decrease - negative impacts on the economy. In this context it is often referred to the possibility of countering potentially negative economic effects of population ageing by a fertility increase or immigration of people at the working age. Of course, changing fertility and immigration are both suited to reduce population ageing. But they influence the population structure, labour supply and thus the economic conditions in substantially different way. This discussion paper focuses on one aspect which is related to this issue. It is examined by simulations how different demographic scenarios affect consumption development and thus...

UNDERSTANDING THE DYNAMICS OF PRODUCE MARKETS: CONSUMPTION AND CONSOLIDATION GROW AgEcon
Kaufman, Phillip R.; Handy, Charles R.; McLaughlin, Edward W.; Park, Kristen; Green, Geoffrey M..
Mergers, acquisitions, and internal growth among grocery retailers, largely since 1996, have increased the share of grocery store sales accounted for by the largest 4, 8, and 20 food retailers nationwide. Similar consolidation is occurring among food wholesalers. At the same time, new packaged and branded produce items are gaining acceptance with consumers and vying for shelf space in the supermarket produce department. Growers, shippers, and their trade associations fear the possibility of fewer buyers for their products, particularly if new marketing and trade practices such as volume incentive rebates and slotting fees become widespread. This report uses data from the Censuses of Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade and industry sources to examine changes...

Effect of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy on Consumption and Beef Meat Market in Croatia AgEcon
Mijic, P.; Tolusic, Zoltan; Rimac, D..
Occurrence of cattle disease known as Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has caused great fluctuations in production and consumption of beef meat in the European Union. Croatia does not have enough cattle to meet demands of domestic market. However, there is not one case of BSE in cattle reported in Croatia to date. This fact can be used as an advantage on the beef meat market, presupposing that Croatia has implemented quality programs to increase number of cattle. Research results show that 70% of examinees consume beef at least once a week up to several times a month, and 70.5% have not reduced beef consumption after the disease occurred.

2011 Outlook of the U.S. and World Sugar Markets, 2010-2020 AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2010-2020 using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to remain stable over the next ten years. Sugar prices were increased from 18.7 cents/ lb in 2009 to 27 cents/lb in 2010. World sugar production increased in 2010 along with consumption. Ending stocks did tighten in 2010. Ending stock projections by various organizations for 2011 were lower than previously estimated. World demand for sugar is expected to grow at a similar rate to world supply, resulting in Caribbean sugar prices...

This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to remain relatively healthy for the next ten years. World demand for both common and durum wheat are expected to remain strong. The price levels in 2007 and 2008 will not be maintained in 2009 and future because increased wheat and corn production in 2008 and reduced demand for corn for ethanol production will lower demand and increase supply. World trade volumes of both classes of wheat are expected to expand, but trade...

Demographic Change and Consumption -- A Long-term Simulation Analysis AgEcon
Stiller, Silvia.
This study investigates the influence of the demographic ageing process in Germany on the long-term economic growth path. For this purpose a macroeconomic simulation model which combines demographic forecasts with a modified Ramsey growth model is applied. Special focus is put on the consumption effects of population ageing and the potential to counter those by rising fertility or permanent immigration. The simulation results illustrate that in the medium and in the long terms per capita consumption is among all demographic scenarios lower than without demographic changes. Permanent immigration can retard the consumption decrease. Rising fertility even reinforces the decline of consumption in the examined period of time. Das Diskussionpapier beschäftigt...
