Organic and inorganic human-induced contamination of Posidonia oceanica meadows ArchiMer
Pergent, Gerard; Labbe, Celine; Lafabrie, Celine; Kantin, Roger; Pergent-martini, Christine.
In coastal environments, plants are used for phytoremediation of contamination. Organic and inorganic contaminants may be due to natural and/or anthropogenic sources. The aim of this study is to compare inorganic (trace metal) and organic (PAH) contamination in Posidonia oceanica and to analyse the relationship between these types of pollutants indeed very few studies have been interested in their correlations and common sources. P. oceanica leaves were collected in two sites exhibiting different levels of human-induced pressure. Higher values were recorded in the more polluted site (Toulon) for trace metals (Ag, Hg, Pb) as well as for PAHs (Medium Molecular Weight and High Molecular Weight) due to the presence of the city and/or harbour in proximity. For...

Pesticide contamination of the coastline of Martinique ArchiMer
Bocquene, Gilles; Franco, Alain.
In January and February 2002, the presence of certain agricultural pesticides throughout the coastline of the Caribbean island of Martinique was investigated. The tropical climate of the French West Indies is suitable for banana production, which requires intensive use of pesticides. An inventory of all pesticides used on the island (compounds and tonnage) was compiled. Surveys and analyses revealed the presence of pesticides in the plumes of seven rivers. The organochlorine chlordecone and metabolites of aldicarb were detected at nearly all of the monitored sites, even though the use of chlordecone has been prohibited since 1993. Two triazines (ametryn and simazine) were also identified. The concentrations of carbamates and triazines detected in the water...

Growth, condition and metal concentration in juveniles of two Diplodus species in ports ArchiMer
Bouchoucha, Marc; Brach-papa, Christophe; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Lenfant, P.; Darnaude, A. M..
High abundances of juvenile fish in certain ports suggest they might provide alternative nursery habitats for several species. To further investigate this possibility, post-settlement growth, metal uptake and body condition were estimated in 127 juveniles of two seabream species, collected in 2014–15, inside and outside the highly polluted ports of the Bay of Toulon. This showed that differences in local pollution levels (here in Hg, Cu, Pb and Zn) are not consistently mirrored within fish flesh. Muscle metal concentrations, below sanitary thresholds for both species, were higher in ports for Cu, Pb and V only. Otherwise, fish muscle composition principally differed by species or by year. Juvenile growth and condition were equivalent at all sites. Higher...

Influence of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) sexual maturation stage and ploidy on uptake of paralytic phycotoxins ArchiMer
Gueguen, Marielle; Baron, Regis; Bardouil, Michele; Haberkorn, Hansy; Soudant, Philippe; Truquet, Philippe; Lassus, Patrick.
The purpose of this study was to assess paralytic phycotoxin uptake in diploid and triploid oysters at two stages of their sexual cycle corresponding to their status in early summer (June) and winter (November). Samples of diploid and triploid oysters were exposed to a toxic culture of Alexandrium minutum for 4 days in each season. No significant differences in filtration or clearance rates were observed during either November or June experiments. When diploid oysters were at resting stage (November), toxin uptake showed no significant difference between the ploidy classes. In contrast, when the diploid oysters were at the peak of their sexual maturation (June), the triploid oysters were seen to accumulate almost double the amount of paralytic toxins as...

Contamination des coquillages par les norovirus en rivière d'Auray (Norocoqauray) ArchiMer
Treguier, Cathy; Schaeffer, Julien; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie; Le Guyader, Soizick.

Environment and immunomodulation : effects of the soluble fraction of Norwegian heavy fuel on the immune system of Sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Bado-nilles, Anne; Quentin, Claire; Le Floch, Stéphane; Arzel, Jacqueline; Auffret, Michel; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Renault, Tristan; Thomas-guyon, Hélène.
Estuaries and coastal areas are often subjected to much pollution, including pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) produced by anthropic activities. Bay of Marennes-Oléron is an estuarine coastal zone in which there is a high level of aquacultural production and this has adverse effects in aquatic organisms. In fact, PAHs, which are widely spread throughout aquatic ecosystems, have a low polarity and so there is a clear tendency to bioaccumulate in marine organisms (1). The harmful effects of such contaminants on the organism's immune system, leading to a decreased resistance to pathogens, is a relatively new area of research and it still poorly understood. The aim of the present work was to detect the impact in vivo of PAHs on the immune...

The link between trophic ecology and metal accumulation in marine fish species was investigated through a multi-tracers approach combining fatty acid (FA) and stable isotope (SI) analyses on fish from two contrasted sites on the coast of Senegal, one subjected to anthropogenic metal effluents and another one less impacted. The concentrations of thirteen trace metal elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, U, and Zn) were measured in fish liver. Individuals from each site were classified into three distinct groups according to their liver FA and muscle SI compositions. Trace element concentrations were tested between groups revealing that bioaccumulation of several metals was clearly dependent on the trophic guild of fish. Furthermore,...

Metal and metalloid bioaccumulation in the Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) from New Caledonia: Laboratory and field studies ArchiMer
Metian, Marc; Hedouin, Laetitia; Eltayeb, Mohamed M.; Lacoue-labarthe, Thomas; Teyssie, Jean-louis; Mugnier, Chantal; Bustamante, Paco; Warnau, Michel.
The present work aimed at better understanding metal and metalloid bioaccumulation in the edible Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris, using both laboratory and field approaches. In the laboratory, the bioaccumulation kinetics of Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, and Zn have been investigated in shrimp exposed via seawater and food, using the corresponding gamma-emitting radiotracers (Ag-110m, Cd-109, Co-57, Cr-51, and Zn-65) and highly sensitive nuclear detection techniques. Results showed that hepatopancreas and intestine concentrated the metals to the highest extent among the blue shrimp organs and tissues. Moulting was found to play a non negligible detoxification role for Co, Cr and, to a lesser extent, Zn. Metal retention by L stylirostris widely varied (from...

Otolith fingerprints as natural tags to identify juvenile fish life in ports ArchiMer
Bouchoucha, Marc; Pecheyran, C.; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Lenfant, P.; Darnaude, A. M..
The construction of ports has caused substantial habitat destruction in coastal areas previously used as nursery grounds by many fish species, with consequences to fish stocks. These artificial coastal areas might provide alternative nursery habitats for several species for juvenile fish abundances and growth in ports, although their contribution to adult stocks had never been estimated. The variability of otolith composition in the juveniles of two Diplodus species was investigated in three contrasting port areas and two adjacent coastal juvenile habitats of the Bay of Toulon (northwestern Mediterranean) in order to determine the possible use of otolith fingerprints as natural tags for the identification of juvenile fishes in ports. The global accuracy of...

Etat de la contamination du Bassin d'Arcachon par les insecticides et les herbicides sur la période 2005-2006. Impact environnemental ArchiMer
Auby, Isabelle; Bocquene, Gilles; Quiniou, Francoise; Dreno, Jean-paul.
Within the framework of the study on cup oyster breeding in the Arcachon Basin (IFREMER's SURGIBA Programme, co-financed by Europe, the Regional Council of Aquitaine, the Regional Council of Gironde and the Arcachon Basin's inter-communal Syndicate), some pesticides have been researched in the main waterways and in the waters of several of the Basin's zones (Figure 1), during the summer months (June to September) from 1999 to 2003 inclusive (Auby and Maurer, 2004). The presence of a certain number of molecules, mainly from herbicides, was found in the waters and it has generally been possible to identify their source. Anthropogenic disturbance on nursery function of estuarine areas for marine species ArchiMer
Courrat, A.; Lobry, Jeremy; Nicolas, D.; Laffargue, Pascal; Amara, R.; Lepage, M.; Girardin, M.; Le Pape, O..
Estuaries serve as nursery grounds for many marine fish species. However increasing human activities within estuaries and surrounding areas lead to significant habitat loss for the juveniles and decrease the quality of the remaining habitats. This study is based on the data of 470 beam trawls from surveys that were conducted in 13 French estuaries for the purpose of the European Water Framework Directive. It aimed at testing the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on the nursery function of estuaries. With a multispecific approach based on ecological guilds, two fish metrics, abundance and species richness of Marine juvenile migrant fishes, were used as proxies for the estuarine nursery function. Indices of heavy metal and organic contaminations were...
