The residual effect of cutting and grazing during the growing season was investigated in the spring and summer growth in an organic crop rotation with 1-4 year-old grass-clover mixtures of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) either with or without red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and with and without slurry. The white clover mixtures had significantly higher yields in spring and summer in swards that were previously grazed compared to previously cut swards, when slurry was applied. The percentage of white clover in spring was considerably reduced by previous grazing and this caused the yield response of slurry application to be highest following grazing. A similar effect on the clover content was not found in the... |

Plant diversity is often low in high-yielding temporary grasslands in Europe, with grass-clover being the traditional dominant mixture. Non-leguminous dicot forage herbs have potential as complementary species to traditional grassland species. Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) and caraway (Carum carvi L.) are the three non-leguminous dicot forage herbs (hereafter called forbs) that have attracted most attention. Another form of grassland production of increasing interest is the practice of growing species mixtures containing only forage legumes for low-input production of biomass with high protein content. In this study, grassland nitrogen (N) dynamics were studied in a sward that included the forbs chicory, plantain... |

One core idea behind organic production is that cropping systems should be less dependent on resource import than conventional production and minimize negative environmental effects. This study aimed to test novel organic rotations, designed to reduce reliance on external resource import. We compared a conventional system (C) and an organic system relying on manure import (O1) to two rotations (O2 and O3), both relying on autumn cover crops for soil fertility, and in O3 green manure rows were left as intercrops. Resource import differed between 149, 85, 25 and 25 kg N ha-1 year-1 in C, O1, O2 and O3. Crop yields were lower in the organic systems (on average 82% of conventional yields), differing among crops, when based on the area grown with main crops.... |

Land management aiming to sustain ecosystem services is an important issue, especially in biodiversity hot spots such as found in Mediterranean areas. In Mediterranean areas, viticulture is an important land use. Vineyards are frequently found on inherently poor soils and are submitted to intensive management practices, which threaten soil functioning and associated ecosystem services. To encourage winegrowers and stakeholders to be reflective and adapt their vineyard practices, we evaluated the effects of three soil management practices (inter row plant cover duration, weeding and fertilization strategies) on soil functioning in 146 commercial plots distributed in Southern France, by a complementary set of biological and physico-chemical indicators. We... |

A pot experiment in a greenhouse was conducted to follow the question how to esti-mate dominance of legumes in legume/grass swards by image analysis. Pure swards and binary legume/grass mixtures of red clover, white clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass were sown in two week intervals and harvested together 35, 49 or 63 days after sowing to have different old swards. Digital photos of all variants were taken one day before harvesting. Sward composition was detected by fractionating biomass in grass, legumes and unsown species as reference. Eight images of the oldest swards were selected for determining an optimal image analysis procedure with Optimas®. This image analysis procedure was used for all variants of all ages. The estimated dominances of... |

Cover crops can reduce leaching and erosion, introduce variability into crop rotations and fix nitrogen (N) for use by the main crops. In Finland, undersowing is a suitable method for establishing cover crops in cereals. The effect of annual undersowing on soil nitrate N was studied at two sites. Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), white clover (Trifolium repens L.), a mixture of red clover and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.), and westerwold ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. var. westerwoldicum) were undersown in spring cereals during six successive seasons, and a pure stand of cereal was grown in two years after that. In all years, the soil nitrate N was measured in late autumn, and in addition in different times of the season in last four years.... |

Over the past fifty years, most poultry in the UK have been managed in specialist indoor systems and excluded as a significant enterprise from most other farm types. This meant that there was little information on how to integrate poultry into land-based systems such as organic production. This Defra project OF0163 aimed to assess methods of integrating organic poultry into crop rotations, taking into account the need to meet the birds’ nutritional and physiological requirements for health and performance, the recycling of nutrients between soil, plants and birds and practical limitations of the system. Objectives 1. To review the scientific literature available on home grown protein sources so as to identify their maximum inclusion rates in organic... |

This tool is about growing cover crops in the best way in an organic arable crop rotation. Thus, the tool is for organic farmers and their advisors who want a successful implementation of and increased knowledge on growing cover crops – regardless of experience. Cover crops can if used properly have tremendous effect on soil quality, nutrient leaching/losses, weed pressure, and soil erosion – common challenges in arable farming. The tool helps to identify when to grow cover crops and where to position them in the rotation. Furthermore, it suggests cover crop species suitable for different soil types, degree of crop competition, existing N-pool in the field and how much seed is needed pr. ha. Structured as a factsheet, the tool provides... |
