Differing U.S. and European Perspectives on GMOs: Political, Economic and Cultural Issues AgEcon
Runge, C. Ford; Bagnara, Gian Luca; Jackson, Lee Ann.
This paper provides an overview of the historical and cultural factors that have contributed to divergent U.S. and European views on GMOs, and to resulting different national regulatory approaches for these products, specifically labelling policy. Within the context of the international trading system, these national policy choices will have impacts that will spill over national borders. Dialogue may be difficult to achieve, given widely divergent views concerning GMOs; however, without dialogue potential global social benefits of policy harmonization will be forfeited.

Linking Diversity to Organizational Effectiveness: Lessons from a culture study at CIAT AgEcon
Amariles, Fabiola; Peralta, Gustavo; Johnson, Nancy L..
This Brief describes a ‘culture study’ carried out to explore how different staff groups perceive the culture of an international research centre and how the management of staff diversity issues affects the work environment and organizational performance. The perceptions of various staff groups were analysed in relation to five aspects of organizational culture: institutional climate; global competitiveness; empowerment and group motivation; work–life balance; and equity in gender and diversity. The study identified what staff believed to be the key strengths and weaknesses in the organization’s culture and detected four strategic areas for improvement: internal organizational communications; re-design of job positions and responsibilities; multi-cultural...

Culture and values - their relevance for marketing strategies AgEcon
Rewerts, Astrid Lucie; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
Research on consumer behaviour has revealed that the prospect of reaching a personal value is the virtual buying motive. Bearing this in mind, the researcher, as well as the marketer, is not only able to observe whether one product is preferred to another, but also to understand why this product is preferred. Hence, identifying consumers' personal values contributes to explaining consumer preferences and buying motives, which is of great importance for marketing practice. Personal values that are developed during the process of socialisation are part of a culture and differ depending on one's cultural background. Therefore, culture- specific values result in specific consumer behaviour. The aim of our paper is to combine research about buying motives...

SER COMPETITIVO SEM DEIXAR DE SER COOPERATIVO: PROPOSTA DE ANÁLISE SISTÊMICA PARA O DILEMA DAS COOPERATIVAS AgEcon
Holf, Debora Navar; Binotto, Erlaine; Padilha, Ana Claudia Machado.
Adversities, generally, have the capacity to generate behaviors that aggregate people. The objective of this work is to propose an analytical structure, using approaches such as social entrepreneurship, culture, knowledge and cooperation, to treat systematically the competitiveness dilemma that agricultural cooperatives face. The premise of this structure is that the social entrepreneurship that supports organizations such as agricultural cooperatives brings together culture, knowledge and a cooperative stance, which tend to influence the performance of the organization through their presence in its other internal factors. The basic concept of a cooperative organization is its most important differentiating factor because it presupposes that the purpose of...

Lima,L.A.; Lima,C.D.L.C.; Carvalho,L.R.; Margutti-Pinto,M.E.B..
The heteroantagonism between Enterobacter agglomerans, isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of American vulture Coragyps atratus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from a hospital environment was evaluated. The slow (layer) and the wells (direct) techniques were tested, using agar and soy tryptone broth pH 7.3 at 37ºC. Through the slow method from 196 tests, inhibition growth halos, related heteroantagonism phenomenon observed in 118, corresponding to 60.2% positive results. Equivalent positive results were detected using wells (direct) methodology. The seven samples of E. agglomerans tested were capable of revealing heteroantagonism in the experimental conditions; antagonism reveled by the presence of a clear growth inhibition halo. The added 1%...

Avaliação da reação em cadeia da polimerase e do isolamento bacteriológico convencional na detecção de Salmonella Dublin em amostras de fezes de bezerros infectados experimentalmente Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,D.G.; Silva,D.R.; Silva,P.R.L.; Cícero,E.A.S.; Ferraz,A.L.J.; Lemos,M.V.F.; Fagliari,J.J..
The efficiency of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) combined with selective enrichment broth was compared with the standard microbiological techniques for detection of Salmonella Dublin in fecal samples of 10 to 15-days-old Holstein calves, experimentally infected with 10(8) CFU of Salmonella Dublin. Seventy-six fecal samples were analyzed using PCR associated with selenite cystine (SC) and Muller-Kauffmann tetrathionate (TMK) broths and standard microbiological techniques. Regardless of the selective enrichment broth used, the standard microbiological techniques were significantly better than PCR in detection of positive samples of Salmonella Dublin. However, the simultaneous use of both techniques provided detection of a larger number of positive...

The effect of temperature, salinity and nitrogen products on food consumption of pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis BABT
Wasielesky Jr.,Wilson; Bianchini,Adalto; Castaño Sanchez,Cecilia.; Poersch,Luis Henrique.
Studies were carried out to investigate the effect of temperature, salinity, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate on food consumption of pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis. Juveniles (0.2 - 0.4 g) were acclimated for 15 days in seawater with different temperatures, salinities and concentrations of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. After the acclimation period, 20 shrimps per treatment were individualized in order to have their ration intake analyzed through the amount of ration offered and left over within a 24-hour period. Mean food consumption presented significant alterations (P<0.05) for the tested temperatures and nitrite concentrations, whereas for the salinity, ammonia and nitrate treatments, shrimp presented no alteration on food intake (P>0.05)....

Use of secondary sewage water as a culture medium for Chaetoceros gracilis and Thalassiosira Sp (Chrysophyceae) in laboratory conditions BABT
Costa,Rauquírio André Albuquerque Marinho da; Koening,Maria Luise; Macêdo,Sílvio José de.
Experiments were carried out in order to test the efficiency of additions of secondary sewage as a culture medium for Chaetoceros gracilis and Thalassiosira sp (Chrysophyceae) under laboratory conditions. These algae were cultivated in sea water with concentrations of 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of wastewater. The results were compared with those obtained by the nutritive medium f2 of Guillard (1975). The best results in terms of cellular densities were observed at 40% additions. There were significant differences (significance levels of 5%) between the nutritive medium f2 and the 40% additions for both the species. Maximum cellular densities observed for all additions tested were, 4,125.00 x 10³ cells/ml for Chaetoceros gracilis on the ninth day and 834.00 x...

Urban secondary sewage: an alternative medium for the culture of Tetraselmis chuii (Prasinophyceae) and Dunaliella viridis (Chlorophyceae) BABT
Costa,Rauquírio André Albuquerque Marinho da; Koening,Maria Luise; Macedo,Sílvio José de.
The effect of different concentrations (10, 20, 30 and 40%) of urban secondary sewage on the growth of Tetraselmis chuii (Prasinophyceae) and Dunaliella viridis (Chlorophyceae) was examined to verify the possibility of its use as an alternative culture medium for these species. Stocks and 700mL duplicate batch cultures were maintained under controlled laboratory conditions. 30% and 40% additions were the most efficient for the growth of both species. Statistical analysis of the adjusted growth (cell.mL-1) and biomass (µg chlorophyll-a.mL-1) curves performed using the Chi-square test (p<0.05) demonstrated significant differences between the nutritive medium f/2 and the 40% addition used for these two species. The results suggested that some of the...

Lupus vulgaris in a pediatric patient: a clinicohistopathological diagnosis BJID
Afsar,F. Sule; Afsar,Ilhan; Diniz,Gulden; Asilsoy,Suna; Sorguc,Yelda.
Lupus vulgaris is the most common form of cutaneous tuberculosis which usually occurs in patients previously sensitized to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We present a case of a 10-year-old boy who was diagnosed as lupus vulgaris clinically and histopathologically. He had well demarcated, irregularly bordered, pink, infiltrated plaques on his left cheek showing apple-jelly appearance on diascopy. The histopathological examination showed tuberculoid granulomas with Langhans type giant cells. The Mantoux reactivity was in normal limits, and no acid-fast bacilli was found in the lesion, either by direct stained smears or by culture. The lesions showed marked improvement on anti-tuberculosis treatment. We want to emphasize that histopathological examination has...
