With humanity facing an unprecedented climate crisis, the conservation of tropical forests has never been so important - their vast terrestrial carbon stocks can be turned into emissions by climatic and human disturbances. However, the duration of these effects is poorly understood, and it is unclear whether impacts are amplified in forests with a history of previous human disturbance. Here, we focus on the Amazonian epicenter of the 2015-16 El Niño, a region that encompasses 1.2% of the Brazilian Amazon. We quantify, at high temporal resolution, the impacts of an extreme El Niño (EN) drought and extensive forest fires on plant mortality and carbon loss in undisturbed and human-modified forests. Mortality remained higher than pre-El Niño levels for 36 mo... |

In Brazil, a large part of the Atlantic Forest was deforested in pastures, which were developed on the basis of natural fertility and organic matter content of the new deforested soil. However, as time went by the organic matter content in these areas have been decreasing causing soil degradation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the organic matter as a quality indicator of Ultisols in different levels of pasture degradation in the region of Governador Valadares-MG. Four sites of pastures were chosen at different levels of degradation, observed visually, two capoeiras in different stages of natural recovery and forest site (reference). Soil samples were collected at three depths (0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.10 and 10-0.20 m) in two seasons of the year... |

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the decomposition dynamics of sugarcane residue under conditions of enriched atmospheric CO2 concentration using a FACE facility (Free-Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment). The experiment, conducted in Jaguariúna, São Paulo State, Brazil, using the ClimapestFACE facility, received two treatments: elevated CO2 (550±100 ?mol mol-1) and ambient CO2 (400 ?mol mol-1), for a single amount (5 t ha-1) of straw (cane trash), in a randomized-block design with six replications. Decomposition was determined by using litter bags with sampling at 0, 14, 36, 60, 90, 119, 179, 291 and 362 days after commencement and determining the remaining biomass (kg ha-1), decomposition rate (%), constant k(kg.day-1) and half-life (t½) of... |

Transdisciplinary approaches that provide holistic views are essential to properly understand soil processes and the importance of soil to society and will be crucial in the future to integrate distinct disciplines into soil studies. A myriad of challenges faces soil science at the beginning of the 2020s. The main aim of this overview is to assess past achievements and current challenges regarding soil threats such as ero-sion and soil contamination related to different United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) including (1) sustainable food production, (2) ensure healthy lives and reduce environmental risks (SDG3), (3) ensure water availability (SDG6), and (4) enhanced soil carbon sequestration because of climate change (SDG13). Twenty experts... |

Extensive livestock represents around 93% of cattle production in Brazil and pasture is its main food source. For this reason, the sector considers pasture degradation an important problem, being responsible for economic and environmental losses. Several sources indicate that more than 60% of the 160 million hectare of Brazilian pastures shows some level of degradation. The need for precise information about degraded pasture levels, localization and quantities leaded to the GEODEGRADE project. Human activities pose a major threat to tropical forest biodiversity and ecosystem serv-ices. Although the impacts of deforestation are well studied, multiple land-use andland-cover transitions (LULCTs) occur in tropical landscapes, and we do not knowhow LULCTs differ in their rates or impacts on key ecosystem components. Here, wequantified the impacts of 18 LULCTs on three ecosystem components (biodiversity, carbon, and soil), based on 18 variables collected from 310 sites in the BrazilianAmazon. Across all LULCTs, biodiversity was the most affected ecosystem component, followed by carbon stocks, but the magnitude of change differed widely amongLULCTs and individual variables. Forest clearance for pasture was the most prevalentand high-impact transition,... |
