Developmental processes and their results, morphological characters, are inherited through transmission of genes regulating development. Activation tagging is a powerful tool to identify new mutants and to obtain information about possible biological functions of the overexpressed genes. The quadruple cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S enhancer fragment is a strong enhancer, which is most commonly used for this purpose. However, the constitutive nature of this enhancer may generate lethal mutations or aberrations in different plant organs by the same overexpressed gene. ZNF230 is a novel zinc finger gene cloned by our laboratory. In order to understand the potential functions of this gene in vertebrate development, we cloned the zebrafish orthologue of human ZNF230, named rnf141. The cDNA fragment of rnf141 was obtained by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The open reading frame (ORF) encodes a polypeptide of 222 amino acids which shares 75.65% identity with the human ZNF230. RT-PCR analysis in zebrafish embryo and adult tissues revealed that rnf141 transcripts are maternally derived and that rnf141 mRNA has a broad distribution. The developmental degree of the wax glands was compared in four Meliponini bees, that produce different quantities of wax. The histological data and height average of the wax epithelium during the time in which the maximum production of wax is expected, are in accordance with the rates of wax produced by the species. In Lestrimelitta limao (Smith, 1863) a species which has cleptobiotic habits, and frequently rob wax from the attacked colonies, the height of wax epithelium was the lowest among the studied species. The cells seem to show an abnormal vacuolated cytoplasm, in the phase in which they would be producing wax.

The reproduction of Bothrops jararaca (Wied, 1824) in captivity in ordened to determine the intercourse period, births, number of neonates, proportion of males and females per litter were performed between 1989 and 1999. Fifty eight females were observed, 16 intercourses in captivity, 45 females arrived already fertilized from nature and 53 litters, resulting on the birth of 426 live neonates, 67 infertile egg masses, 18 stillborn neonates and 4 abnormal neonates. The intercourse period was from february to december and the births happened between february and may. From the two gestacional periods observed, the shortest one was 152 days and the longest 239. A colony of Synthesiomyia nudiseta (WULP, 1883) was established in the laboratory to obtain eggs, larvae and puparium, to determine the period of development and viability at constant temperature with RH above 75% and photoperiod of 12 h. The viability of development cicle was 48.68%. Incubation period was 21.17 h, larvae development 25.97; 48.08 and 233.65 h for the first, second and feeding phase of third instars, respectively. The development period of postfeeding larva, prepupa and pupa development was 322.26 h.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the ontogenetic development of the skull in the Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis Van Bénéden, 1864 ) through the comparison of 29 morphological non-metrical characters together with the estimated age of 54 specimens derived from four areas on the northern coast of Brazil. L'élevage est une activité majeure dans le Nordeste semi-aride. C'est aussi un domaine d'intervention privilégié des institutions de recherche et de développement, qui souhaitent promouvoir Ia diffusion de modeles technologiques dits « modernes ». L'analyse et en évidence le décalage entre des propositions élaborées et expérimentées en station, selon des objectifs d'augmentation de la productivité et des criteres de validation biotechniques, et Ia réalité des dynamiques et des besoins des producteurs familiaux. Elle montre que les choix techniques des exploitants se réalisent en fonction de stratégies dont les tenants et les aboutissants échappent en partie au domaine de Ia technique au sens strict.

Les réalités de I'agriculture familiale nordestine sont plurielles. Contrairement aux discours dominants, qui évoquent invariablement· le petit producteur et son immobilisme, les agricultures familiales connaissent de p rofondes mutations techniques, économiques et sociales. Les résultats des travaux présentés dans cet ouvrage confirment combien les mots d'ordre développementalistes correspondent à des perceptions idéologiques ou déformées de Ia réalité. A leur façon, les connaissances produites cherchent ici à corriger les représentations figées qui prévalent trop souvent.
