In aquaculture, it is extremely important to determine the composition of fish farm waste to evaluate its potential impacts and to improve its reuse. Near-infra red spectroscopy (NIRS), an alternative to standard chemical analytical techniques, is a quick non-invasive method to assess physical and chemical composition, reducing the cost of routine analysis. We developed NIRS calibration models for organic matter (OM), total organic carbon (TOC), total organic nitrogen (TON), the carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N), total phosphorus (TP) and the lipid content of marine fish particulate waste. To obtain a wide range of compositions of fish waste, decomposition time, feed loss, and inter-specific variations were taken into account. The NIRS calibration models were... |

Computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA) was used to characterize the motility of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax spermatozoa and to study the effect of several physicochemical variables and heavy metals on sperm swimming performance. Duration of sperm motility in sea bass was very short (< 50 s). During the first 20 s all the motility variables measured remained approximately constant, the velocity and linearity of the movement being maximum during this period, while both variables decreased sharply later. While slight variations in pH did not significantly modify sperm swimming performance, changes in osmolality affected all the measured motility variables. Two of the heavy metals tested, Cu2+ and Pb2+, did not affect sperm motility when the activating... |

Movement activity and localization of food were studied dynamically with the objective of establishing the capacities of behavioral adaptation of the young Dicentrarchus labrax faced with a novel situation. The role played by previous rearing conditions was demonstrated, the level of stimulation being a sensitive intervening factor (currents associated with the food). The data show the favourable effects of such treatment, and are in agreement with work carried out on higher vertebrates, which have brought to light the importance of early stimulation in behavioral ontogeny which respect to emotionality as well as capacities of adaptation in subjects reaching adulthood. |

Optimizing the metabolic use of these carbohydrate-rich plant products in fish feeds could be achieved through nutritional programming strategies of fish larvae. The present study aims at testing the long-term effect of an early-life high-carbohydrate nutritional (34% of starch in the feed) stimulus in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), by examining several biochemical and molecular parameters involved in carbohydrate metabolism in sea bass larvae and juveniles, compared to a control group fed standard larval regime (phase 1). As awaited, specific activities of digestive enzymes, from pancreatic and intestinal segments, involved in glucide digestion (amylase, sucrase) were enhanced together with an up-regulation of glucokinase gene and... |

The nuclear DNA content in Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus aurata, Liza ramada, and Anguilla anguilla, was measured by flow cytometric analysis. Male human leukocytes were used as internal reference cells. Nucleated fish erythrocytes were stained simultaneously to human leukocytes with a staining buffer containing propidium iodide (PI). Nuclear DNA contents of target species were estimated in relation to an assigned value of 7.0 pg DNA for male human leukocytes. The DNA content/nucleus (+/- CI) was 1.55 +/- 0.02 pg for D. labrax, 1.90 +/- 0.03 pg for S. aurata, 1.57 +/- 0.02 pg for L. ramada, and 2.43 +/- 0.04 pg for A. anguilla. Intraspecific DNA content variations ranged from 0-9% and averaged around 4% in all taxa. The results did not evidence significant... |

A method of geometric morphometrics was used to characterize body shape variation in meiotic gynogenetic and triploid sea bass in comparison with diploid controls. A total of 13 coordinate landmark data were recorded on the profile of 34-month-old control (n = 81), gynogenetic (n = 117) and triploid (n = 131) siblings generated from two females (A and B). Three main axes of morphometric variation were consistent, and these accounted for 60.8 and 57.6% of the total variability in females A and B, respectively. There were significant shape deviations of triploid and gynogenetic fish relative to the controls, and differences were particularly evident in the progeny of one female. Overall, triploids displayed a more slender shape than diploids, whereas... |

A sperm cryopreservation protocol adapted from turbot, was tested on sea bass using either 250-mu L straws or 1.5-mL cryovials. A dilution to 1/3 in Mounib's extender and a cooling rate of 65 degrees C.min(-1) allowed frozen sperm to recover an initial motility similar to that of fresh sperm at thawing; however, significant differences in motility (P < 0.001, n = 10 fish semen) were observed at further post-activation times, the motility decrease being faster in thawed sperm. At the experimental scale, triplicate inseminations of 2-mL aliquots (approximately 2 000 eggs) showed a significant fertility decay of thawed sperm compared to that of fresh sperm (P < 0.01, n = 12 fish semen) when a discriminating 35.10(3) spermatozoa to egg ratio was applied.... |

From 2010 to 2012, 246 data storage tags were deployed on European seabass in the Iroise Natural Marine Park, a marine protected area (MPA) off west Brittany, France. A return rate of 14.6% associated with long time series of data provided new information on fish ecology (e.g. maximum experienced depth greater than 225 m, temperature range 6.80–21.87°C). Depth and temperature series were used to infer individual migration using an innovative hidden Markov model (HMM) especially developed for seabass geolocation. Reconstructed fish tracks revealed that seabass is a partially migratory species, as individuals exhibited either long-distance migrations towards the Bay of Biscay or the Celtic Sea, or residency behaviour in the Iroise Sea. Fidelity to summer... |

Subcellular cadmium (Cd) partitioning was investigated in the liver of two marine fish species, the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax and the Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis, dietary exposed to an environmentally realistic Cd dose for two months followed by a two-month depuration. Cd exposure did not modify Cd cellular partitioning for either species, refuting the spillover hypothesis. Both species contained most of the Cd in the detoxifying fraction but displayed different handling strategies. Cd was largely bound to heat stable proteins (HSP) including metallothioneins (MT) in sea bass while Cd was more linked to metal rich granules (MRG) in sole. Whole liver concentrations and subcellular partitioning were also determined for essential elements.... |

Estuaries and coastal areas are often subjected to much pollution, including pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) produced by anthropic activities. Bay of Marennes-Oléron is an estuarine coastal zone in which there is a high level of aquacultural production and this has adverse effects in aquatic organisms. In fact, PAHs, which are widely spread throughout aquatic ecosystems, have a low polarity and so there is a clear tendency to bioaccumulate in marine organisms (1). The harmful effects of such contaminants on the organism's immune system, leading to a decreased resistance to pathogens, is a relatively new area of research and it still poorly understood. The aim of the present work was to detect the impact in vivo of PAHs on the immune... |

The production of fish larvae by hatchery shows an intensive increase for several species, but the specific nutritional requirements of larvae were poorly known until some years. We have conducted several experiments aimed to understand the specificities in larvae digestion, and to formulate a compound diet taking into account the differences compared to juveniles. The chosen species was the European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, and the data were validated on different species. Larvae were fed live preys or experimental compound diet, especially formulated for the experiment. It appeared that pancreatic digestive enzymes, such as trypsin and amylase could be assayed in early ontogenesis, before mouth opening, and increase dramatically during the first... |
